Google Shutting Down Some of Its Products


Google, while famous for being the most popular and widely used search engine in the world, has plenty of other products that are used by millions of internet users around the world. Think of its other services such as Adwords, Gmail and of course the video sharing site YouTube that they own. But Google also has a few dozen smaller services that don’t enjoy such widespread popularity. And as of late, the company has been restructuring some of its offering and shutting down some of them, which have either outlived their usefulness, or simply don’t have enough users to make keeping them active worth while for the company.

 

One service that Google is planning to get rid of is iGoogle, a custom home page service where people could decide which information gets displayed when they open their browser. There is some speculation that the shutdown is simply due to the fact that the service dates from another era, where “portal” websites were all the rage and people liked to get news, email, weather, etc. all on one page as soon as they opened their browser. Remember that unlike most other search engines at the time, the main Google home page was very simple and not cluttered with different categories and elements like on Yahoo. Google will be getting rid of iGoogle on November 1st 2013, so the remaining users who find the service useful can continue to enjoy it until then.

 

Another Google service that will be axed is Google Video. It’s a simple video sharing service that has largely been replaced by YouTube when Google bought the. Many are surprised that Google hasn’t gotten rid of Google Video sooner, given the fact that new content uploads stopped being accepted back in 2009. If you still have some videos there, you should consider moving them to YouTube or another video sharing service soon, as it will be gone on August 20th 2012.

 

There are many Google products and services which have been discontinued in the past couple of months. Some examples include: Google Desktop, Google Pack, Google Gears, Patent Search and Google Friend Connect.

 

The good news for the users is that in many cases, the functionality provided by services that have been closed down or that will be soon have been integrated in another Google product. If not, chances are that there is another online service that can provide you with the same or similar features.

 

There is some speculation about why Google is launching and then shutting down so many products. Some comments from users say that the company is too busy trying to dominate every corner of the internet and have a service that can do everything imaginable. But even with all the investments made in research and development of new online products, there are those that simply don’t catch on, become obsolete or aren’t able to compete well with already established websites if the Google product doesn’t offer anything substantially better for its users.

With all the myths floating around on the internet about the Google Panda update, it’s time that we made some sense about what that update really means and how webmasters can adjust to it. Here are some more myths about the update that we can debunk:

 

  • Large Sites that Consistently Ranked Well Will Not be Affected

 

There are some major players in the web content field that were hit by the Panda update. About.com, a site that provides information on various topics thanks to guides and FAQ’s submitted by its users has stated that it saw a “moderate” impact on its traffic due to Panda.

 

Associated Content, a site where different writers can submit articles and that was owned by Yahoo! Has also been affected. This has resulted in Yahoo! Retiring the site, opting instead to keep some of its best content and to move it over to a new site called Yahoo Voices.

 

Therefore, no matter how big or popular a site is, it can be affected by Panda.

 

  • Sites That Were Penalized Will Still Keep the Penalty After Improving Their Content

 

Web pages that are in Google’s index are run through the filter on an occasional basis. Pages that were improved will have a chance to get back on track. The important thing to know is that you should seek to make improvements to your entire site to ensure that it has quality content and not just a few pages. It may take a while for your site to recover from its penalty, however Panda is not designed to permanently ban a site from the search index.

 

  • Only the Pages With Poor Content Will be Penalized

 

Unfortunately, Panda will apply a penalty that will be valid for the entire site if there are enough pages that are classified as poor quality. It is possible that some pages on a website that have been penalized will keep their good ranking if they are of very high quality, however. But this is not something that will happen in all cases. Therefore, webmasters need to be sure that all of the pages on their site have high quality content, or risk getting penalized.

 

  • Only Websites That Have Articles on Them Will be Penalized

 

Again, all web pages will go through Panda, so it doesn’t matter what type of content you have on your site. It will still be subjected to the rules of the filter. Even if your website only has pages which have one or two hundred words on them and can’t really be classified as “articles”, your site could face a penalty if these pages are ranked as poor quality. No matter what you have on your website, you should follow the basic SEO recommendations, such as making sure that good spelling and grammar is used on all pages, not overusing keywords, not inserting irrelevant keywords into pages they don’t belong, etc.

We’ve seen that you can use Yahoo Answers in order to get some free traffic to your website. But some people wonder whether it is the right place for them to get traffic for THEIR site. Let’s take a look at what types of offers or products that you can successfully promote using them.

Affiliate/CPA offers.

This is the main thing that online marketers do to earn money: push some affiliate offers. You can get traffic to your offers by using Yahoo Answers, but you need to do it the right way. First, don’t post affiliate links on Yahoo Answers. Doing so will rapidly get you banned, as remember, it is not a place to advertise, but rather to share useful information. Therefore, you will need to build a landing page and get a domain name for your site. A $0.99 .info domain will do here.

Now, what kind of offers will do well here? While some people have had success with offers that require a credit card or a purchase, I have noticed that offers which simply require the person to sign up for a site or fill out information do better.

For example, if you are targeting the “make money online” niche, you have some options. You could build a simple, one or two page site that gives information on various paid survey opportunities and insert your affiliate links there. When you answer the question, provide some useful information about how online surveys work and how they can make some easy money and then send the reader to your site in order to compare various survey sites. You could also build a landing page for a free biz opp offer and send the reader there. You get $2 – $5 for every person that fills out the form.

There are other niches for you to explore as well. Many people ask questions about how much car insurance costs or how to get a student loan. There are plenty of pay per lead offers which are related to these niches. Just answer the askers question, and then tell them that “you found this site” which lets them compare car insurance quotes or get proposals for student loans, etc. Try out various types of offers and see what converts best.

No matter what you do, do not simply spam your website link all over the place. You should appear as a genuine participant in Yahoo Answers. Ask questions yourself. Answer some questions in other niches without linking to any website.

You could do this in about 1 or 2 hours each day. But if you want to save time, you can always hire a freelancer to answer the questions and participate for you. There are plenty of people who would be willing to do the work for you for a small amount, such as $0.25 per answer they post on the site.

As we all know, traffic is king in the internet marketing world. No traffic to your site equals no money for you, since there is no one visiting your site. There are various ways that you can use to get traffic to your website, but many webmasters are looking for free traffic. Is it even possible? Don’t you need to spend money in order to make money? Well, thanks to the power of the internet, it is possible to get free exposure for your site and thus draw visitors to it.

Yahoo Answers is a very good way to bring people to your website. For those of you who don’t know, Yahoo Answers is a place where people ask questions about various topics and others give them answers. The good thing about this platform is that you can insert a link to your site in your answer. Also, the site gets a lot of traffic from all around the world. What makes it a great marketing tool is that anyone can see the questions and answers, not only the person who asked the question.

But in order to stay out of trouble and get the maximum benefit from Yahoo Answers, you need to conduct your marketing activities properly. Remember, this is a place where users seek information. Even if the site you are promoting is related to online surveys, for example, answer some questions about other things such as dogs or computers or whatever else you may know about as well. This will make it look like you are a legitimate contributor, rather than someone who is just answering questions related to their niche to get clicks to their own site. You should give more answers without your link than those with it.

The traffic that you will receive may start slowly, but if you keep at it you will soon get enough visitors to make some decent commissions or sales each month.

This is in part due to the fact that they have a wide selection of offers that can be promoted by their affiliates. When you join a CPA network, you will have the chance to run a variety of different campaigns, like trial offers, email submit offers, ring tone campaigns and more. The problem for many people new to the internet marketing industry is joining a network and getting accepted into one.

There is one main reason why CPA networks have gotten harder and harder to get into as an affiliate: increasing amounts of fraudulent affiliates singing up. But if they don’t, go ahead and give them a call. This shows that you are serious about joining the network. During the phone call, you will be asked a few simple questions, such as your marketing experience, how long you have been doing internet marketing, which offers you plan on running, which other affiliate programs you are taking part in, how will you be promoting the offers (PPC, SEO, email, media buys, etc). Just have your answers ready and you should be able to get approved in no time.

Usually they offer a free boost in traffic just for signing up with them, and giving them some information about yourself, which will likely then be sold to other companies for marketing purposes. Most of the claims these traffic providers make are completely false. Let’s take a look at a few of the common claims they make and the truth about them.

“We’ll submit your site to 5 thousand search engines, you’ll get so much search traffic, it will blow your mind!”

Claims like this are rarely a direct lie, but they are misleading. Sure, they will submit your site to all of the search engines they promise to submit it to, but the actual impact on your traffic won’t be anywhere near as amazing as they claim. Sure, you’re the first result, but who is actually searching for that? No one, that’s who.

If a service is offering to boost your traffic, and they try to make lofty promises and guarantees, you should just walk away. SEO and internet marketing are extremely complicated. No one can make a blanket guarantee that your traffic will be effected in a fixed way without looking at your site, and what’s going on in your niche.

The best way to get more traffic to your site is to take the time, and effort to optimize your site for search, and post relevant and interesting content to it. If you absolutely can’t resist using a traffic boosting service, be sure to do some research before picking a service. Avoid free services that make promises like the ones above, and if you’re going to use a paid service, look up some reviews before sinking any money into it.

Try to find keywords with 2,000 searches or more per month, obviously, and less than 25,000 competing pages in Google, where few are authority sites on the first page of the search engine you are targeting.

So let’s say you have 5,300 searches per month for a keyword, that might get you 0 visitors, unless you are ranked high in Google for that term, so the competition might be “100,000″ in quotes.

That is too much, but if the same keyword had 5,300 searches and only 8,241 competing pages in Google you will more likely rank for that keyword! Understand? Great!
