Does Content Length Matter?

When it comes to writing articles and using them for content marketing, one of the biggest debates that is ongoing is “what length of article is the best”. Is a 1000 word article going to perform better than a 400 word article? And with all the changes that have been going on with Google recently, with the search engine putting a strong emphasis on “quality content”, some may think that longer content will be better for SEO purposes.

But the thing is, there is no standard in terms of number of words that defines what is a “good article”. When you measure how a certain article performs, there are numerous things you need to take into consideration. You need to ask yourself: what do I want this article to do? It could be: clicks to the rest of your website, views to the article in order to build up your brand image and reputation, having the article syndicated on other sites, having others post links to the article or getting an overall better ranking on Google.

A good way to approach the question is to ask yourself: what length is required to discuss the topic of the article? If you’re writing something about the economy or politics, a 1 500 word article may be needed. But if you’re writing about “animal shaped mailboxes made out of recycled organic materials”, chances are if you write 1 500 words, you will either go completely off topic, or start repeating yourself over and over again. This will simply bore the reader.

You should also remember that there will be human readers actually reading the content that you put out. In many cases, they’re not reading things just for fun, but are actually looking for an answer to their questions. In some cases, the answer can be provided in 250 words or less. In some other cases, it will take far more than that. When you do a search, you’ve probably had frustrating results where the page you click on either gives just a few bits of vague information that you already knew, or keeps rambling on and on and on and you have to pay close attention to the content to see whether it will eventually contain what you’re looking for or not.

Proper organization and structuring of the article will also matter greatly. If it’s a “How To” article, having well defined paragraphs, with bullet points that contain concise information will be much more satisfying for the reader than a 4 000 word piece of content that looks like a doctoral thesis on the topic. So for example, if someone wants a guide on how to change a watch battery, remember that they’re not coming to the page to read a history of watchmaking or to read several paragraphs where you critique different styles of watches.

The bottom line is, there is no hard and fast rule for article length. Just like with anything else, basic common sense prevails: it should be long enough for its intended purpose and not more.

Some Easy to Avoid SEO Mistakes

When it comes to SEO, there are some common mistakes that webmasters make which could be detrimental to actually getting a website to secure a good place in rankings on Google as well as other search engines. However, it should be known that these common mistakes are things that could be easily avoided by just following some simple pieces of advice. Here are the most common errors and ways that you can avoid them:

Focusing too Much on Length of Content

While you may have read that Google prefers content that is longer, this really depends on the context and doesn’t automatically mean that longer articles, blog posts, etc. will give you a magic ticket to a number one spot on Google for your chosen keywords. Remember that the reason why you’re writing the content in the first place is for the readers on your website and not for search engines. If you have a topic that you could comfortably write an 800 word article on, then you can do that. However, there are cases where a shorter post could be just as good. For example, if you’re writing about a specific model of decorative mailbox, it’s going to be pointless to try to force a 1000 word article on it, as there’s just a limited amount of things that you can say about a mailbox without going off topic or repeating the same things over and over with different words. Remember, if somebody came to your site, it’s because they’re interested in knowing more about this mailbox, what it’s made of, how does it look, etc. They’re probably not interested in reading a 2000 word essay about the history of the international postal system.

Using Keyword Stuffing

Keywords in articles should appear naturally. If you write an article that is about a specific topic, then there shouldn’t be any problem getting a keyword density of 1 to 3% in the article. Forcing in a large amount of keywords will not be helpful with regards to SEO. This is for 2 reasons: it makes the text harder to read and makes it look not natural. Also, search engines penalize pages that were clearly designed with nothing but SEO in mind, such as those which contain keywords that are deliberately overused.

Adding New Content to Your Website or Blog Every Single Day

If your site deals with certain topics that change daily, such as news, this could be necessary and very useful. But otherwise, there’s no need to keep posting new things every single day. This is especially if the new content doesn’t actually bring anything useful or informative to your readers but is just a repeat of what you’ve said the days before. Regular site visitors who see this will find your site boring rather quickly and stop visiting it. It also puts you at risk of getting penalized as your site will start having more and more duplicate content posted on it within a short amount of time. Updating your site is good, but don’t do it just for the sake of updating either.

Previously, we have seen how it is possible to make money from Fiverr by selling your services. But there are other ways that you can profit from this unique freelancing site and this is by being a buyer. While making a profit buying things may not seem very obvious at first, there are actually some ways that you can make this happen. Let’s take a look at some of these ways:


  • Buying Traffic and Social Media Promotion


Let’s say you have a product or service that you are selling online and could use some traffic to get some exposure for it. There are many sellers who offer social media promotion on Fiverr, such as sending out Tweets or putting a link to your website on their Facebook fan page. Many of these people have tens of thousands of Twitter followers or Facebook fans, meaning that your message will be seen by a lot of people. However, it is still important that you check the reputation of the seller, just to make sure that their fans or followers are actually real people rather than bots. You can do this by checking their feedback and seeing what others have left as comments about the service that they offered. Still, for just $5, you are getting a lot of potential exposure and are not risking a lot of money if you don’t get the results that you were hoping for.


  • Outsourcing Services


While I have mentioned it in another post some time ago, I will say it once again: there is a lot of profit to be made from what is referred to as “services arbitrage”. What does it consist of? Quite simply, you would sell your services at another place, such as an internet marketing forum and then outsource it to people on Fiverr for a lower price. So let’s say that you get paid $7 to write a 600 word article based on an offer that you’ve made on an IM forum. You would then outsource that article creation to someone on Fiverr and have them write it for $5. You keep the $2 difference as a profit. Sure, the $2 doesn’t sound like much, however this can quickly add up. So if you are outsourcing 10 articles a day, this can generate a profit of $600 a month. Not bad, considering the fact that you could spend less than an hour a day managing this.


Here again, the trick is to make sure that whoever you are outsourcing the work to will do a quality job so that you can maintain your reputation as being a provider that offers great services to your client. Check the seller’s past feedback to see if it is good and give them a small assignment to begin with. If you notice that they do good work and follow your instructions well, you can then send them more regular work and you will have found a great partner that you can outsource your work to.

Ebay is the most popular online marketplace in the world, where some sellers have made millions by selling various kinds of merchandise to consumers. Of course, it’s not easy to earn 7 figures from the site, but it is well possible to make a few dozen dollars per day from it with a bit of effort and investment.

Selling on Ebay is the electronic equivalent of you having a stand at a flea market. You buy goods from a distributor at a low price and then re-sell them at a profit to the end consumer. All you are doing is applying the concept of buy low/sell high, which has existed for thousands of years.

So, for example, you would buy 10 cell phones at $300 each from a distributor that sells wholesale goods. You then resell them on Ebay for $400 and you keep the difference minus Ebay and PayPal fees. While this may seem like just a few dollars a profit, if you get larger products and many new clients you can make a lot of money by outsourcing services to your staff members.

One of the best things that you can do with this method is to basically do a combination of both providing services for others and using your virtual staff for your own marketing efforts. That way, you have two streams of income at any time.

If readers can’t even understand what you are saying, they are quite unlikely to want to visit your website afterward and will simply go read something else. Therefore, it could be much better to rewrite the articles yourself or pay a freelancer a couple of dollars per article to do it for you. The results will usually be quite better.
