Protecting Your Online Business: Preventing and Recovering From Attacks on Your Site

Now that you know how your online business can be attacked, it’s time to figure out ways that you can use to prevent them from happening. Many of these ideas are actually simple to implement, so any online business owner should take a look at them. No website can be made completely untouchable to dedicated groups of malicious individuals, however there are various ways that can be put forward to reduce the chance of an attack, as well as immediately stop the damage if one does happen.

  • Choose your hosting wisely

Your web host is where your site will be residing so it is extremely important that you choose one that takes security seriously. Avoid free and very cheap hosts, as they often tend to make compromises about security in order to achieve such cheap prices. Before selecting a web host, read some independent user reviews to see if that company has had any serious issues with hacking and security in the past and how they helped their users recover from damage and secure their site if an attack has occurred.

While this option may not be the best choice for everyone, using a VPS or dedicated hosting type instead of shared hosting offers much better security than a shared hosting server, where all websites are put together on one server, thus making it easier for malware to spread. If your business grows, investing in top quality hosting might be a good choice.

  • Maintain backups of your site

Having regular backups of the entire contents of your website is very important as this is what will help you recover should your site have been attacked. There are many web hosting companies which do daily backups of your site for you (or at least claim they do) or let you create a backup copy of your site and keep it on their servers. However, there are many hosting customers that have expressed dissatisfaction that when they needed them, the backups were not available or they had extreme difficulty getting their web host to restore their website to the way it was before. Therefore, it is always a good idea to maintain regular backups either locally, or on a remote backup server that is not run by your main web host.

Having a backup copy of your site is the only way that you can restore it back to how it was in case it is compromised, so it is not a step that you should skip, even though it may take a bit of time and effort. Remember, restoring a site from backup will require less energy and cause less down time than trying to rebuild a website that has lost all of its content from zero.

These are two main things that you can do to better protect your business, but of course they’re not the only actions you can take to increase your site’s security. Tomorrow we will look at more methods that you can use to ensure your site’s protection.

More Online Marketing Mistakes You Shouldn’t Do: Part 3

More Online Marketing Mistakes You Shouldn’t Do: Part 3

There are quite a few mistakes that online entrepreneurs sometimes commit when they build an online business, or promote a brick and mortar business through the internet. Here are some last things that you should know about when you use online marketing. By avoiding these common mistakes, you will be able to do your online marketing activities with less potential problems and hassles.

Here are two more mistakes that you should know about:

  • Associating with rogue marketing services providers

There are a lot of individuals and companies which offer marketing services to businesses online, most of which focuses on getting traffic to your website. While hiring a company to provide you with marketing services can be quite useful and help your business a lot, you should be careful about who you hire, as this can cause problems for you if you hire a “rogue” operator.

There are plenty of ways to get traffic to a website, however not all of them are ethical or in accordance with the terms of services of search engines and other sites. Some rogue marketing providers may engage in practices such as blackhat SEO techniques, forum spamming, email spam, creating social media apps that redirect traffic to a site without the user’s consent, promoting websites through adware that is difficult for a user to get rid of, etc. If you want to build a long term business, then staying away from these types of practices is the way to go. If you aren’t careful about the marketing techniques that are used by your partners, you can find yourself in trouble, such as by getting your site penalized in search engines, taken down by your web host, banned from certain websites and generally gain a bad reputation for your business.

  • Having an unreliable website

Your website is probably going to be the main way that you connect with your target audience online, so the most important thing is that it works and works well all the time. The first thing to consider should be your choice of hosting. Make sure you do some research on the web host that you intend to use and see if they’ve had any reliability problems or other troubles that their users have reported. Stay away from free hosting services or small companies that charge very cheap rates, as they’re the least likely to give you reliable service.

Besides the hosting, another common source of problems is the site itself. If you use a content management system or an e-commerce platform, make sure that you’re picking a reliable product that can handle your websites traffic well. Do some research on any content delivery systems and plug ins that you intend to use on your site, so as to make sure that you will only be using the best ones.

By knowing and avoiding these common mistakes, you will make your online marketing experience more profitable, easier and the whole experience will be more pleasant, both for you as well as your website visitors.

Tips To Start Your Blog Right

Tips To Start Your Blog Right

If you’re thinking of starting a blog, then there’s obviously some things that you would need to do in order to get started. While starting a blog may look easy, if you’re going to make some money from it, then there are a few things that you need to think about before you get going. Here are some things that you need to do in order to start a profitable blog:

  • Decide on a Domain Name

Avoid using free hosting services that don’t give you your own domain name. It’s now possible to get a domain for about $8 and the most basic hosting service for less than $5 a month, even without paying in advance or taking a commitment with a web host.

  • Install Blogging Software

There are a few blogging platforms that are now popular, however WordPress remains a favorite. Other content management systems that you can use for your blog are Joomla and Drupal. It’s recommended to go with WordPress if you don’t have too much experience as a webmaster, due to the fact that it allows easy customization and is also relatively simple and straightforward to use.

  • Customize the Look and Feel of Your Blog

Actually changing the design is quite easy, since WordPress has a library of hundreds of free blogging templates. There are also many more commercial templates that you can buy and use together with your WordPress blog. The main issue is that these templates will determine just how your blog looks, so it’s important to pay close attention to them. What you can always do, is to install some templates, make some test posts and look at them one by one to see which of them would be the best suited for the type of blog that you’re going to be putting up. You can also ask others for advice about which blog theme would work best for you.

  • Think of Your Content

Create a strategy to add content to your blog before you even launch it. This is because content is the most important element of your blog and what draws readers to it. The more interesting content you post on a regular basis, the more others are likely to find your blog informative, come back to it and also link to it from their own blogs.

Will it be something informative, something related to recent news, or will it be more of an opinion blog where you share your views on a variety of topics with your readers? Will you add other kinds of content besides text, such as graphics, diagrams and videos? How often will you post? Will you be doing all the content writing yourself, or will you hire a freelancer to do all or part of your blog posts? Before you launch the blog, these are the most important questions that you will need to ask yourself.

Tomorrow, we will see some more ideas on how you can get more traffic to your blog and optimize it to get the maximum amount of visitors possible.

Building Your Blog for Online Marketing

Building Your Blog for Online Marketing

You’ve probably heard about how effective it can be to build a blog to help you with your online marketing efforts. It is true that if you have a website, adding a blog can be very useful, as it will deliver interesting content that will be both useful for your readers and also will be well loved by search engines like Google. This will help you rank higher for your targeted keywords and ultimately lead to more money for you in the end. Building a blog is straightforward enough, but there are some things you would need to be aware of first. You will see some of the things you can do to make your blog a more effective tool.

Choosing a Good Blog Hosting Provider

If you already have a website, then your web host will probably allow you to add another website either on its own domain, or as part of a subdomain of your existing one. If you don’t then you should sign up for a basic shared hosting account to begin. Avoid using the free services like Blogger, as they’re not really a good choice if you want to make money from your blog. A paid hosting account gives you more flexibility and reliability over the content of your blog.

Figure out How You Will Make Your Blog Profitable

If you already have a website where you’re selling your own products, one of the ways to make your blog some money for you would be to link to the relevant pages of your main website from articles posted within your blog.

But there are also other ways that you can monetize a blog even if you’re not selling anything directly online. For example, you can include affiliate links to products that you provide information on in your blog, or that are related to its content. So if your blog deals with mobile phones, you can include mobile related affiliate offers on your blog. It is also possible to add some pay per click ads from a service such as Adwords or Bidvertiser, where you will get paid for every click that someone makes on one of the ads served on your blog.

Decide What Kind of Content You Will Have On Your Blog

Of course, you need to decide on a niche for your blog. But also, you will need to determine what you will be talking about more specifically in that niche on your blog. Your blog could, for example deal with new happenings in your niche/industry. Or you could provide product reviews of products that you sell on your own site or are an affiliate of. And then there is the possibility of putting up informational and educational content that’s related to your main niche. Of course, you can also combine all of these possibilities in your blog, but it is a good idea to know what kind of posts you will be making once the blog is up.

Some Tips for Hosting Resellers

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Some Tips for Hosting Resellers

Are you, or do you want to become a reseller of web hosting services? A web hosting reseller is an online services provider that gives clients web hosting services, by reselling server space from another hosting company. While for some, this can become a very profitable business, many web hosting resellers are actually small companies where the owner operates the host as a “side business” making a few hundred dollars per month, to complement their other online activities.

If you would like to succeed as a reseller of web hosting services, then you will find the following tips quite useful:

  • Resell From a Quality Host

Obviously, all of the actual web hosting will be taking place on another company’s server, therefore you will be dependent on them to provide the service to your customers. This means you are essentially going to be creating a business partnership with them. Research the host in question and get some unbiased reviews, especially concerning their reliability. Do take note, that as web hosting is a very competitive industry, the internet is full of fake “reviews” that are left by affiliates that are paid a commission every time someone signs up for service through their site. This is why you should avoid “Top Ten Host” sites, where all the reviews are actually created by the webmaster and not the user. Look for some hosting review sites which let users post their opinions and look up the host’s name on webmaster or online business forums. This will truly get you a better picture of their quality.

  • Get An Unlimited Plan if You Can

If you want your hosting offer to be as attractive as possible to your users, then you must give them a generous allotment of disk space and bandwidth. Obviously, this will not be possible if you just go with the cheapest reseller plan that has the least web space. You should instead go for a web host that offers you a reseller package which is unlimited. Therefore, you can create unlimited accounts for your customers, host unlimited domains and also you will have unlimited web space for your users. Unlimited hosting reseller plans typically cost around $100, but they are very well worth it.

  • Provide Good Support

While you may not be able to provide 24 hour a day phone support, do strive to be available to your users as much as possible. If you just have a few dozen users, this will not really be difficult. Be available on live chat whenever you are on the computer. Respond to support tickets and email inquiries promptly. You can do this simply by having your business email forwarded to your smart phone. Many people have social media updates on their phone anyways, so as an entrepreneur, you should get notifications when your customers contact you and respond to them quickly on your phone, even if you are not in front of a PC. Responding to emails within a few hours maximum is considered a good business practice.

Building a Good Small Business Website: Part 3

Building a Good Small Business Website: Part 3

Now that you have seen more information about building a static HTML website, what about using a Content Management System, such as Joomla, WordPress, or Drupal? This is something that many small business website owners are now preferring to do, even though it may seem a bit more difficult to accomplish at the beginning. However, using a CMS has many more advantages as opposed to disadvantages as you will see presented here.

Advantages

  • Ease of updating your website. If you plan to update your website on a regular basis, such as adding or removing products, adding new content, adding and removing seasonal promotions and special offers, etc. than a content management system will make this a whole lot easier for you. All you would need to do would be to log into your back end, make the necessary changes and it’s done. No need to use an HTML editor software, or re-upload files constantly to your web host.
  • No coding or web design knowledge required. Here, you will not need to have any web design knowledge, or know how to use HTML. All you would do is install the CMS, then install the necessary themes or templates that will be the backbone of your site.
  • Good for e-commerce. When you are planning to run an e-commerce website, using a CMS is mandatory if you are serious about it. WordPress, Joomla and Drupal all have e-commerce themes, both free and paid, that you can use to manage your website with ease. You can perform operations such as adding products, setting up different prices, coupons, promotions, integrating with different payment processors and gateways, etc. There are also dedicated e-commerce CMS available out there, such as Magento and OS Commerce.

Disadvantages

  • A bit of a learning curve. For those who are used to working with simple HTML pages, using a CMS for the first time may seem like it has a learning curve associated with it. You will need to figure out which theme is best for your website, then install it and figure out how to use it to make the necessary changes and customizations. However, there are plenty of free tutorials, resources and help files available online for all themes and content management systems. Therefore, even though you may need to spend a few hours learning how to figure it out, in the end it will all be very easy for you.

As we can see here, using a CMS for your business website is definitely a good choice. No matter what kind of website you want to run, there will always be themes and templates available for you. Also, your site management will be streamlined significantly, as you can simply update your website with a few clicks of the mouse, rather than having to fire up Dreamweaver, make changes to your site, save the new file, then upload it to your webhost and replace the old one. Therefore, there is less work involved when using a CMS.

Building a Good Small Business Website: Part 2

Previously, we have seen that there are certain things that you need to decide when you are building a website for your business. One of the things would have been selecting a system to manage the content of your site. Of course, the goal of any business website would be to share information with your visitors about what your business has to offer and make them want to buy your products. But you should also have a good back end system that will enable you to easily manage your website, plus add or remove information to it as necessary. Your main options are either: simply put up a static website, or use a content management system, or CMS. Both options have their pluses and minuses, as such, it would only be logical for us to explore them in the context of building a website for your small business.

Using a Static Website

This is by far the simplest way to put up a site. You create the pages, either from scratch, or by using a template or web builder and then you upload them to your web host. Then, you are done. Let’s examine some of the advantages and disadvantages of this option:

Advantages

  • Ease of use. You will simply have to create the web pages and upload them onto your server. There are no new systems that you would need to learn how to use, etc. This makes creating a static website quite easy and an attractive option for beginner webmasters.
  • Availability of many templates and tools. There are plenty of free and paid website templates and web building tools that you can use to create your site. Many of these are quite straightforward to use as well.
  • Highly customizable. You can add any type of content that you want on your site, usually with a WYSIWYG web editor, without worrying about compatibility issues too much.

Drawbacks

  • Hard to add or remove information. If you have a static website, adding or removing information, especially if you need to do so on a regular basis, will be quite difficult. You will need to open up the page in an HTML editor, make the changes and then re-upload the page to your web host. While this is certainly achievable, it is not too convenient.
  • Limited e-commerce features. If you plan on selling things on your website directly, then managing an e-commerce site that is simply composed of static HTML pages is quite hard. You will have no back end system, so you will have to rely on your payment processor’s system to manage sales, get reports, etc. Also, adding and removing products, adding new promotions, etc. is going to be quite difficult due to the point above; you will need to manually edit and re-upload the page every time.

Conclusion

Using static HTML pages for your business website may be an acceptable option, if you own a business where your offerings do not change very frequently and if you are not selling anything directly on your website.

Choosing an E-Commerce Platform

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Choosing an E-Commerce Platform

If you want to build an e-commerce site, then you have probably noticed that your web host offers you a choice of “shopping cart” or e-commerce platforms. The most common ones are Tomato Cart, Magento, OSCommerce and Zen Cart. For those who are new to e-commerce, selecting the right platform for their needs may sometimes seem to be difficult. But there are ways to simplify the process. Here are some things to do if you are new to building e-commerce sites:

  • First, get informed

There are plenty of websites, blog posts, forum posts, articles and guides which are available freely online and deal with all aspects of e-commerce websites. By reading those, you will have more of an understanding of how e-commerce sites work and how the system which powers them works too.

  • Read some reviews

To get some information, you can read some reviews of various e-commerce platforms that were left by other online entrepreneurs and webmasters. This will give you a general idea as to which platforms are preferred by webmaster communities and which ones are not so good. However, it is important not to base your decision exclusively on comments left by others, as a platform that may be appropriate for one webmaster may not be for another one.

  • Do a test installation

The easiest way to accomplish this would be to create several subdomains on your main site and then install a different e-commerce platform on each one. That way, you will be able to try various platforms for yourself. You will be able to see the admin panel of the e-commerce suite right away and can see whether you are more comfortable working with one platform over another one.

  • Check for the availability of themes and add-ons

Most platforms come with a default theme, but many webmasters would like to customize their site even more. See which themes are available for the platform of your choice and consider whether they would go well with the website ideas that you have. Most e-commerce platforms also have additional plugins and add-ons which you can add that allow you to expand on the functionality of your e-commerce site, such as by adding multiple language support, etc.

  • Look at the support available

When it comes to support, you should be aware of one important thing: if you are using free, or open source software, the support that you will get will be quite limited. After all, it would be quite illogical to demand 24 hour a day phone support for a product that you are getting for free. Most of the support on open source products is done through community forums. If you are having a problem, chances are that someone else also experienced the same or a similar issue and posts were made on the forum regarding a resolution. But you should consider whether the support forum is really active and the users are interested in sharing information and helping each other. Obviously, if the entire forum is full of “Look at me! My site is the best!” threads, it will not be very useful incase of a problem.

Creating Your Membership Site: Selecting Your Hosting

Creating Your Membership Site: Selecting Your Hosting

We’ve seen that running a membership site is a great way to make some money on the internet and to give your product more value to your customers and potential customers that are looking at your sales page. But how do you actually start a membership site? What do you need to accomplish this? There are certain things you need to get before you start developing your site. Here are some of them:

  • Good Web Hosting

Now, what exactly is “good web hosting” when it comes to powering your membership site? The thing is, almost any kind of web hosting will support applications and scripts designed to run a membership site. Shared web hosting, the one that costs about $5 per month, is the most popular kind of hosting out there. However, it is not recommended for this purpose? Why not? It says unlimited everything, so you should have no worries, right?

Well, unfortunately this is wrong. Shared web hosting is NOT unlimited, despite what the marketing materials for the web host say. And this is really NOT something that you want to find out the hard way after you launch your site.

You see, shared web hosts impose certain limits on your account, such as the number of files, databases and simultaneous connections to your site. Even though they may say they have unlimited bandwidth, if you start to use too much (say more than a few GB per month, which is quite easy to go over if you host several videos on your site), they will simply cut you off. They do this not out of greed, but simply because a site that is too big will use up too much of the server’s resources, thus making it slow and unstable for the other websites that are hosted on the same server in a shared hosting environment. Shared hosting would only be good if you were planning to get just a dozen or so members to your site each month.

What you should get as a hosting solution instead would be a VPS web hosting account. This basically means that you would be getting a portion of the server allocated specifically for your needs (CPU, disk space, bandwidth and RAM). Your hosting will run on a virtual machine, similar to what you would get if you would be running Windows under MacOS on your home computer. That way, you will not have to worry about competing for resources with other sites on the server and you will also never have to worry about getting your hosting suspended because you used too much bandwidth or RAM.

VPS web hosting is a bit more expensive than shared hosting. However, if you plan to make some money from your membership site, you must be willing to invest a bit of money in it. If you are planning to get a few dozen members to your site each month, then a mid range VPS would be the solution. This will cost you between $35 to $50 per month, depending on the provider that you will be using.

Using a Blog for Internet Marketing

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Using a Blog for Internet Marketing

If you want to make some money online by promoting affiliate offers, then there are various ways for you to accomplish this. You could building landing pages for each offer you push, or even link directly to the offer depending on which advertising channel you use. But one of the ways to push affiliate offers online is by simply creating a blog.

Blogs have many advantages. They make it very easy to add unique and new content, which will help them remain interesting with readers and also make SEO easier. With blogging platforms such as Joomla and WordPress, creating your own blog has never been easier. So how do you make one for affiliate marketing? Here is an example scenario:

Let’s say that you are promoting web hosting affiliate offers. The main topic of your blog will be web hosting, or issues that are of interest to other internet marketers or webmasters. You would make regular posts such as: web building tips, reviews of particular web hosts, comparisons between different types of web hosting, SEO advice, etc. Basically, anything that is related to being a webmaster.

There will be various ways for you to “plug” the affiliate ads into your blog. You can, of course use classic banner ads, or text ads placed in prominent locations. But it is also possible for you to include affiliate links inside the text of your blog. For example, you could link the name of a web host that you talk about in a blog post to the affiliate offer.

But one important thing to remember when you are creating a blog for affiliate marketing is to not make it look like this is the only purpose of your blog. Sure, for you the main objective of your blog would be to generate money for you. But your readers come to your blog in order to be informed about something they care about, not simply read post after post that is singing praises of various different companies and products.

So back to our example of a web hosting blog. Sure, it is fine to have certain posts talk about how great a certain web host is, or that inform readers of a special promotion that a hosting company is having at this time. But you also need to include some informative content as well. So you could make some posts that talk about web design tools or posts that explain how VPS web hosting is different from shared hosting, etc. If your readers notice that your blog is nothing more than an advertising platform, chances are they won’t trust it very much. They will probably leave to go to another site and the chances that someone would click one of your ads and sign up for one of the web hosts that you are pushing are quite remote if your blog is structured that way. Basically, the key to success is having regularly updated and informative content.

Is Local Web Hosting a Good Idea?

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Is Local Web Hosting a Good Idea?

There are plenty of local business owners and internet entrepreneurs who are asking as to whether going with a local hosting company in their city is a good idea. One of the principal reasons as to why they are interested in using a local web host is to support the local economy and to support local small businesses like theirs. Certainly enough, no one could ever say that supporting a local business is a bad idea. But are web hosting solutions which are provided by small local companies really adequate for everyone’s needs?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Here are some possible drawbacks of using a small local hosting company for your website:

  • They haven’t established their reputation yet

Large, international hosting companies which do business with everyone and are not aimed at a particular city have usually been thoroughly reviewed and talked about on the internet. You will find reviews made both by webmasters who have simply hosted a website with them, to experts in the field of web hosting. This can be very helpful in making a determination as to whether a certain web host provides quality service or not. If you can’t find many reviews on the host you intend to use, it can be quite hard to make this decision.

  • Their support could be limited

Small companies often cannot afford to have staff members that are available 24 hours a day who can answer all of your questions and resolve problems, just like the bigger hosting companies. Remember, your website is not like a store, it never closes. Therefore, it needs to be up 24 hours a day and help should also be available 24 hours a day should it be needed to resolve any technical problems that cause your site to not function properly. This staff should also be truly able to fix problems, rather than just note down information and say that someone will get back to you the next day.

  • They may have limited resources

Smaller companies usually cannot afford to make large investments in order to have an entire data center filled with servers. Furthermore, they may not have the facilities to make daily backups, as well as have a contingency plan in place should there be a problem, such as a fire, natural disaster, or power failure.

So, who are local web hosting companies actually good for?

If you run a small website for your business and you don’t mainly depend on the site to conduct your operations, then you could go with a local hosting company if you believe that it is a better idea in your opinion. However, if you are running an e-commerce site that is the main source of revenue for your company, you are much better off using the services of a larger web hosting company which has shown that they have a good reputation in the marketplace and have a perfect record when it comes to reliability and support.

Why Avoiding “Cheap” Hosts is a Good Idea

Why Avoiding “Cheap” Hosts is a Good Idea

When searching for web hosting, you may have seen companies that offer you really inexpensive hosting, such as $2 a month for an unlimited plan without any commitment. Obviously, these prices are attractive, but there must be some catch, right? Well in many cases, these hosting companies are places that you should stay away from if you are serious about your online business. Here are some reasons as to why:

  • They are usually not real “web hosting companies”

What is meant by that is that they don’t have their own offices, staff, servers and connections. In most cases, these cheap hosting providers actually rent a server from another web host and then resell the space to their customers in an effort to make money. But what could be worse is simply one person buying a server and then plugging it into their internet connection at home. Obviously, don’t expect much in terms of reliability with that kind of arrangement.

  • They don’t provide good support

It would be very rare for such a company to give you 24/7 customer service and technical support. In most cases, the only way you have of getting in touch with them is by email or by opening up a support ticket on their website. It can take several hours, or even days for them to get back to you. Don’t assume that if they have a toll free number and claim that they offer “24/7 support” that they are actually a real hosting company with staff standing by to take your call. Any kid can get a toll free number and then just forward it to his cell phone. Many times, you will find that when you try calling them, no one is available and you are told to leave a message.

  • They haven’t built a reputation in the web hosting industry

These inexpensive hosts are usually “no name” companies that have not built a reputation and have not been reviewed by many customers. As such, you will have trouble actually trying to find out whether they offer good service or not. Buying hosting from a reputable company is the key when you want stable and secure hosting. Consider this: which one would be a better MP3 player? A real iPod, or some Chinese imitation that sells for $10? The same principle applies to web hosting as well. You are much better off sticking with the known companies and brands if you want decent service.

  • Security and reliability could be a further problem

Professional web hosting companies know how to keep their servers running in optimal condition and how to secure them from attacks by hackers, viruses and malware. A no-name hosting company might not. In fact, they may cut down costs by not even making any backups, so if data is lost due to a server malfunction or hacking, it could be gone forever unless you have made your own backup copy first.

Becoming a Web Hosting Reseller: Is It A Good Choice?

When looking for hosting on the website of a major web host, you may have seen a “reseller” option and wondered what this was for. You may have even seen something like “You can make a ton of money by having your own webhosting company”. But is all of this really true? Can you really make money as a hosting reseller? If you were dreaming of having your own webhosting company, is this the answer?

Well, it is possible to make some money as a reseller. But there are some drawbacks to that too. Let’s take a look at some of the advantages and some of the drawbacks.

Advantages of becoming a reseller:

  • You will get server space, management tools and billing tools provided by the web host

This will allow you to effectively start your own web hosting business, without all the overhead that is normally involved, such as renting out space, buying servers, paying for the internet connection, etc. Since the web host provides you with all the tools to manage your operations, managing your customers accounts will also be easy.

  • Many webhosting providers that offer reseller accounts also provide you with marketing tools

To make things easier for you, many webhosts will give you website templates that allow you to build a great looking site for your new hosting company. Some of them also give you templates for marketing materials, such as banners, articles, etc. This can be very helpful when you are seeking to attract new customers to your business.

Some drawbacks:

  • You will be responsible for providing support

As the hosting reseller, customers will be asking you questions and reporting any issues that they have with their hosting. It will then be your responsibility to resolve these issues or forward them to the webhosts’s technical support department. While this may not be an issue if you have only a few customers, it can take up a lot of your time if you have hundreds of them.

  • You will face a lot of competition

If you have taken a look at the world of webhosting, you will see that it is an industry that is extremely competitive. Of course, there are around two dozen of the “big players” out there, the major webhosting companies like GoDaddy and HostGator. But there are thousands of other, smaller webhosting businesses, many of which are resellers. This means that you will have a hard time competing with all of them and will need to be very creative in order to attract enough customers to make being a reseller profitable.

An alternative to becoming a reseller

If you want to make money from the hosting business, there is another option open for you. You can become an affiliate of a known webhosting company and get paid commission for every new subscriber that you send to them. This is much easier than becoming a hosting reseller and can be just as profitable, if not more.
