Five Steps To Starting Your Online Business

So, you’re thinking about starting an online business, but you’re not sure about what steps to take to get it off the ground. While there is no “one size fits all” method for reaching success, there are a few basic steps you should take when you’re starting out. It’s important to start with a strong foundation for your online business, and these steps will help you do just that.

Define The Purpose

Your online business should be based on a goal, or a series of goals. Those goals will dictate the other steps in your business strategy, so it’s important to establish them before doing anything else. For example, if your business is geared at selling a product, your strategy will be different than if it’s geared at getting subscribers, or making ad revenue.

Define Your Target Audience

It’s important to know who you’ll be gearing your online business toward. Different audiences require different marketing approaches, Take the time do do some research on who is interested in your niche. Is your audience mostly male, or female? What age group do they fall into? What level of income do they have? What other interests do they have? All of this information can help you to create a more effective marketing strategy for your new business.

Look At The Competition

Your target audience probably has certain expectations from a site like yours based on what other sites are already doing. Take the time to look at your competition, and see what they’re doing. You should be offering all of the basic features they are, along with any additional features that you feel you can provide to your customers.

Marketing Strategy

Now that you know a lot about your audience, and what they expect, it’s time to form a marketing strategy. There are a lot of different ways to go about marketing your product, including ads, social media, and article marketing, but you’re going to have to pick the strategies that work best for you. There’s no guarantee that every strategy will work for every online business, so pick and choose your methods carefully based on what you know about your audience.

Learn And Earn

Online business requires you to learn as you go. Test different marketing strategies against one another, and see what works best for you. Keep looking for new methods to reach your target audience, and keep looking for ways to lower your costs. As technology changes, so too does online business.

Keep these five steps in mind as you start out, and you’ll be off to a good start with online business.

Build Trust With Your Subscribers

Build Trust With Your Subscribers

If you work with email marketing at all, you know the hardest part is getting your subscribers to trust you. Everyone gets a lot of spam, and as such, most people are predisposed to deleting a newsletter rather than reading it. If you keep a few simple things in mind, you can ensure that they’ll read your emails rather than deleting them.

Be Consistent

If you want your subscribers to trust you you’re going to have to give them a reason to do so. In other words, you’re going to have to keep the promises you make, and you’re going to have to be clear about what those promises are. If you promise your subscribers a coupon for 25% off of all of a certain type of item, make sure that all the items that are supposed to be included in the sale are going for the sale price. If that same sale excludes certain items, be sure to state that clearly in your email. You want the customer to get the exact same message from the email and your site.

Style Counts

If your emails look nice, and are easy to read and understand, your subscribers will be more inclined to read them on a regular basis. Make sure all of the important information is presented near the top of the email. Also, make sure the title of the email is attractive to the reader. Remember, presentation and style matter. If your subscribers

Personality

Make your emails fun, and interesting for the reader. Don’t just send the same boring advertisements and discounts that everyone else is sending, instead, come up with an entertaining way to deliver your message. If your customers are entertained by your newsletter, they will find it easier to trust you. Additionally, they’ll be more likely to open and read each email you send out. If they expect to find something enjoyable in the email, they’ll be far more likely to open it and read it thoroughly.

Email marketing can be hard. Most newsletters get lost in the sea of spam that floods into everyone’s inbox. If you keep the tips above in mind, you’ll be able to get your subscribers to trust your emails. As their trust grows, so to will the rate at which they open your emails,a nd click your links.

Create A Successful Newsletter

Create A Successful Newsletter

Starting a successful newsletter is tough, no matter what type of site it’s for. Most people delete the majority of newsletters that hit their inbox without ever even opening them. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t run an email marketing campaign, it just means you have to follow a few important guidelines while doing so.

First, and probably the most important, is don’t buy subscribers. We’ve all seen the ads that promise tens of thousands of subscribers for one low, low price, but it’s still not worth it. The price might be affordable, but you probably don’t want the subscribers they’re tying to sell you. You can’t be certain how they got a hold of those email addresses, so there’s always a chance they were obtained illegally, or at the very least, by underhanded means. If they were all obtained on the up and up, you still have no way of knowing whether or not they’re active email addresses that get checked by someone regularly. Even if they do get checked regularly, you still don’t want them. There’s no way to guarantee that each email address you bought belongs to someone who is likely to be interested in your newsletter. You might be buying subscribers that are likely to flag your newsletter as spam, and hurt the overall reputation of your newsletter, and by proxy, your site.

Instead of paying for subscribers, ask for them. Put an opt in page on your site, and put an opt in box on the sidebar. Also, if you have a store, give your customers the option to sign up for your newsletter during checkout. By asking your customers to sign up, you won’t get as many subscribers as you would by buying them, but you’ll get subscribers with a genuine interest in your site, and your niche.

Once you have the right subscribers, it’s important to start sending them the right things. Don’t just send out sales emails, try to send out entertaining and informative content as well. If you can entertain your subscribers, they’ll be more likely to open and read all of your emails, including your sales emails.

A successful newsletter just comes down to sending the right information to the right subscribers. If you have subscribers that are interested in what you have to say, and you’re sending them meaningful content, your newsletter will perform well.

Learn From The Competition

Learn From The Competition

When running an online business, there are a lot of great resources you can look to for inspiration about improvements you can make to your site. The biggest source of inspiration is often overlooked.  You can actually learn a lot about how to improve your site by looking at what your competitors are doing.

Start by making a list of five to ten competitors in your niche that you feel are doing things the right way. Try to pick sites with better Alexa ranks and Google page ranks than your own. Then sit down and take a good long look at each site. Read some of their articles, browse through their archives, check out their store if they have one, and take notes on the experience. Be sure to jot down both your likes, and dislikes about their sites. Then, take some time, and think about how each like or dislike can be applied to your site. If, for example, you really like the image gallery set up they have, see if you can find a similar script to implement on your site. If they’re implementing an interesting feature that you don’t have in place, think about putting that feature on your site. The ultimate goal here is to make your site stronger by implementing strengths found on other sites. If a particular feature you find on another site won’t work on yours, don’t force it. It’s better to skip a feature rather than to try to implement it poorly, and hurt your site’s usability.

This practice doesn’t just apply to your website either. If your competitors have email lists, sign up for them. See what they’re doing with their list that you aren’t doing. Find out what sort of information they’re sharing with their subscribers, and see if you can find any useful ideas to help you adjust your own strategy.

If they have a membership site, consider signing up for their free trial, if they offer one. That way you can get a look at exactly what they’re charging for, and how it stacks up against your offerings.

There’s no shame in learning what you can from your competition. If they’re implementing interesting features, your users will expect your site to start implementing those features. By paying attention to the competition, you can get a feel for how things are changing in your niche, and what you need to be doing to keep up.

Avoid Common E-Mail Marketing Mistakes

Avoid Common E-Mail Marketing Mistakes

E-mail marketing can be extremely difficult. Even if your list contains nothing but high quality subscribers, getting them to read your e-mails can still be a challenge. Converting those readers into sales can be harder still. There are a few common mistakes you might be making that could be turning your readers away, and costing you sales.

Your subject line is your introduction to the reader. Your subscribers decide whether or not to read your e-mail based strictly on that subject line, so you should take some time to make sure it’s right. A lot of people use stiff, boring, or dull subjects for their e-mails, and that only hurts your chances of getting sales. For example, “HTML Programming Course Is Ready For You” is a bad subject line. It delivers the facts, but it doesn’t entice the customer at all. “Learn HTML 5 In Two Weeks!” delivers the message, and gets the customer excited about learning HTML 5 quickly. You can’t just deliver the facts, you have to entice the customer to open the e-mail. If they don’t open it, they won’t click any of your links.

A lot of people make the mistake of sending the same e-mails to everyone on their lists. The problem with that is that everyone on your list might not be interested in the same information. Consider breaking  your list down into several sublists. For example, existing customers should get a different set of e-mails than potential customers. That way, you can offer your potential customers different deals to entice them to sign up for your site, and make a purchase.

Another all too common mistake people make with e-mail marketing is using bad sales copy in their e-mails. You want to keep your e-mails light on text, and easy to read. A lengthy e-mail won’t get read, it will get skimmed, or ignored. Keep your e-mails clear and concise, and they’ll get a lot more attention in the long run.

A lot of people skip one very important step that should never be ignored. It’s important to test every e-mail for compatibility. Your readers are looking at your e-mails in a wide variety of ways, and you should be testing your e-mails to make sure each of your users can read them. What works in Outlook Express might not work in Gmail. Take the time to run a few tests, and it will help you retain your subscribers.

So remember, keep your e-mails clear, and enticing. If you present your e-mails the right way to the right people, you’ll see your sales increase in no time.

List Building Is All About What Your Readers Want

List Building Is All About What Your Readers Want

If you work in e-mail marketing at all, you know list building isn’t just about getting a higher number of subscribers. You want to grow a database full of receptive readers who are more likely to make purchases from you. In order to get those high quality subscribers, you have to keep their wants and needs in mind while crafting your e-mails.

Whatever niche you cover, there’s a good chance your readers are looking for information related to it. By providing some free information with your list, you can keep people interested and engaged in your list. Try offering them a free report just for signing up, or consider sending out an e-mail from time to time that just gives the reader some important information about what’s going on with your business, or the industry you operate in as a whole.

You should also give your subscribers access to special promotions. If your subscribers feel like they’re getting deals they wouldn’t find anywhere else, they’ll keep reading your e-mails, and they’ll stay subscribed to your list. As you send out e-mails with good, exclusive deals in them, word will spread about your list, and just how useful it can be. Over time, you’ll build up more and more loyal subscribers that are likely to make purchases through your e-mails.

It’s important to give your subscribers a sense of belonging. Try to create a sense of community surrounding your list, and your readers will pass your list on to their friends. Try offering  exclusive contests to your subscribers. If your site has forums, it’s also a good idea to send out an e-mail periodically that lists the newest topics on the forums. If you’re interacting with your subscribers in a meaningful way, you will get more high quality subscribers in the long run.

By sending out informative, and engaging e-mails, you will start growing a high quality list full of subscribers that make purchases on your site. Create a sense of community, and those subscribers will tell their friends, and help to bring in even more high quality subscribers. Remember, it’s not the size of your list that matters, but the quality of your subscribers. High quality subscribers who are reading your e-mails, and making purchases are the ultimate goal of a good list.

Optimizing An Opt In Email List Page

Keeping your email opt in page clean and professional is important to showing your users trust and respect. Make sure you emphasize privacy and the purpose of your list. List the benefits of being a member of your email list such as giveaways, free information, gifts, or whatever benefits your list might have. This helps gain trust right away from your users and makes them feel like they will benefit from joining your list, rather than giving away their privacy to a third party. Trust is the most important thing you can build on your opt in page.

The opt in email page takes some time to perfect, but the main objective is to keep the person interested enough to want to give you their personal information such as an email address to offer them solicited information. This is known as opting in to receive the information and allows you to send them related information. Most people will not simply put in their information if they see no incentive or gains that they would receive for doing so. This is where you would provide a free gift for giving you their information. This allows you to provide a free gift as the ethical bribe to earn their email address information.

This means that you will be tasked with gaining the trust of opt in subscribers. The more that you work to gain the trust of the potential subscribers, the more likely they will be to opt in. Once you do get their trust to give you their information you will have to continue earning their trust. Sending them the free gift via auto-response scripts is important to utilize. Do not bombard them with spam and offers they do not need.

Delivering on the join request is very important. You will have to ensure that they will be receiving important information that they will want to read without asking them to buy anything at first. Once gaining their trust has gone on for a few days to a week, your email responses could be tailored to ask them politely to purchase a product. If they do not continue on, the next email should outline why they should buy it. After this, the emails should explain why not using the product is less effective than other products or methods. This will usually provide them with a reason to purchase within a set time frame if their interest is caught well enough.

Using Youtube To Drive Traffic To Your Website

affiliate marketingYoutube is now becoming a major tool for searching online for breaking news similar to how twitter is being used.  For example if there is a news story people will most likely go to youtube to search for a video relating to this news piece.  Some people will use Twitter to search for information regarding this news piece.

A great way to use youtube to drive traffic to your website is to be the first to upload any breaking news to your youtube account and you will see a massive increase in video views on this video.  You can download the news video from any major news site as long as you mention where you got the video from in the description.  To drive the traffic to your website you can simply place your website link in the description offering a free gift to intice your youtube viewers to click on your link and give them a free gift to download in exchange they give you their email to help build up your email subscribers for example.  Once that user is on your website then you have a better chance of getting a sale if you are selling something or a service on your website.

You can also use it to build up your twitter followers by placing your twitter account in the video description.

Also once you have reached over 150,000 views on your videos you can then apply for the youtube google adsense partner programme and make money from your videos aswell.  Joining their partnership programme means you will make money from any advertisement that is shown on that page from youtube.  You will earn commission if a viewer clicks on those adverts.
