Google + Usage Still Growing

When searching for the best ways to advertise online, social media is one of the most popular choices of many marketers today. Google +, the new social networking service launched by Google, has seen some controversy when it first started out, as many believed that it would be a dud, just like some of Google’s other failed products. But it has turned out that the new service by Google may indeed have a chance at really gaining some ground.

Google has recently released new figures about their usage statistics. According to information contained in a news update, Google + now boasts 400 million users who have created an account on the service. However, this doesn’t mean that all of these are users that actively visit the service. There are still many that have just created an account out of curiosity, and maybe uploaded a few photos or linked up with some friends, but who don’t pay too much attention to the service.

The total amount of active users, is actually closer to 100 million. Still not bad for such a recent service and definitely a potential for marketers and small business owners. If we count those that just used the “social layer”, such as clicking on a +1 link on the web, or mobile users who +1 an app that they’ve seen, the number would increase to 150 million.

Another important number is the growth. When statistics were released in July, it was reported than traffic to Google + has grown by more than 65%. Again, this shows that internet users have an interest in Google +.

Marketers and advertisers need to recognize this and consider whether Google + should be part of their overall social networking strategy. The best way to go about things right now is to try using the platform for your business and see what kinds of results you will get. You can compare the performance of using Google + versus some of the other social networks. But as always, you should keep ahead of any new developments and statistics that are released about social networking usage. Because it is those who take advantage of new opportunities quickly that often end up among the winners, as they were the first to see new sources of traffic and exposure for their brand.

So far, usage statistics for Facebook have remained quite stable and there is still clear indication that it is used by a large number of internet users. In fact, as we have seen in a previous post, over 85% of young adults in the United States have a Facebook account and the site also remains popular among the older generation as well.

So far, Google has also made good efforts to keep interest in Google + going, thanks to the redesign of some portions of the user interface, as well as by encouraging webmasters to include +1 buttons on their websites which allows the user to share a site that they’ve seen with their friends.

Using Your Facebook Page Better

Using Your Facebook Page Better

If you have a Facebook page for your business, then you’re on the way to using social media in order to better connect with your target audience and maybe boost your sales numbers. But simply having a presence on social networks is not enough if you want to bring something positive for your business. You need to ensure that you’re using your social networking presence to its fullest potential. Here are a few tips that will help you accomplish this:

Make Your Posts Unique and Interesting

Many of your fans on Facebook will also be readers of your blog or subscribed to your email list. As such, don’t simply repost things that you’ve said somewhere else. This is one of the ways to lose your subscribers attention, as they already had seen the content through another distribution channel. Getting their attention back after could be difficult. While it is normal for you to refer to some posts that you have up on your blog or some items on your website, be sure to add some unique content once in a while too.

Avoid Pointless Grabs for Attention

You would be surprised, but there are many small business owners that make posts which offer very little value on a regular basis, such as “Hey! How’s everyone doing?” or “The sun is really shining today!”. Your subscribers probably already get their share of pointless wall posts from their friends. There is no need to have more of it coming from your business. Again, this is another way to make people stop paying attention to what you’re saying which could reduce the overall value that your social media presence has.

Respond to Comments Quickly… When it is Necessary

If someone asks a question or makes a comment on one of your posts, take a look at what they posted and see whether there’s a useful response that you can provide. But you don’t have to respond to everyone who writes something if your response will be useless. So for example if some users write “That video was good”, you don’t have to thank every one of them for their comment.

Have Social Media Only Promotions

This is a very good way to keep your readers interested in what you post and more likely to look at posts from your page that appear on their news feed. You can offer Facebook only coupon codes, discounts, promotions, etc. This will make your subscribers feel valued and they are more likely to keep an interest in your page for a long time.

Encourage People to Like Your Page

Not everyone will search out for your business Facebook fan page and like it. You need to inform people that it exists. This can be done in various ways, such as including links to your page in email messages, like in a footer on your sales receipts. You should also add social media buttons on your main website or your business blog. The more subscribers you have, the better it is for your business.

Planning Your Email Campaigns the Right Way

Planning Your Email Campaigns the Right Way

We all know that in order for an email marketing campaign to work, it needs to be properly optimized and carefully tailored to both the needs of your organization, as well as to those who will be on the receiving end of your email messages. When you look online, you will see plenty of tips aimed at product creators, small business owners, as well as affiliate marketers that sell to consumers. But these may not always cover topics related to business to business email marketing. While there are some similarities, there are some differences as well between the B2C and B2B worlds of email marketing.

Let’s take a look at some of the things you need to do in order to put together a highly successful business to business email marketing campaign:

  • Plan Your Strategy in Advance

Email marketing isn’t something that you would want to rush if you expect to get some results from your efforts. You will need to take some time to set up your campaigns, think of the content of the messages that you’re going to send, as well as prepare any landing pages that will be specific to your email campaigns.

  • Be Sure to Segment Your Email List Accordingly

This would probably depend on how many subscribers you have, how you got their email and which products they have expressed an interest in. It has been shown that if your email messages are highly targeted to a specific audience, then the recipients are more likely to find them relevant and therefore take whatever action you want them to take. For this reason you should seriously look into maintaining several different email lists at the same time.

  • Set Up a Tracking System

When you send out emails, you would need to see how many of your messages were opened, as well as what your click through rate is for the emails you send out. This will let you optimize your campaigns better in the future, as you would know what impact your emails are having on their recipients. There are plenty of free tracking scripts that you can embed in your email messages and on your landing page, so there isn’t really any reason as to why you shouldn’t be using one.

  • Be Prepared to Test and Make Some Changes

It is by testing that you will be able to see just how well your campaign is going. You can then look at the information you’ve got regarding your open rates, CTR and conversions. If things are all going as you intended, then there is obviously no need to change anything. But if you don’t get the results you wanted, or you would just like to try something else, then you can always optimize your messages on your next mailing. Remember that you need to vary the type of content that you send out in your messages as well. Otherwise, this could bore the recipients and just cause them to lose interest in emails coming from your company.

Social Media Site Satisfaction: What About Google + ?

Social Media Site Satisfaction: What About Google + ?

Previously, we’ve looked at the American Customer Satisfaction Index details for social networking giant Facebook. The conclusion is that even if it is the most widely used social networking service currently online, this doesn’t mean that its users love the service, as they have complaints about some areas of it. But still, numbers show that the majority of people who have a Facebook account aren’t planning on closing it or moving their main social activities to another network, mainly because there isn’t any serious competition… yet.

But what about Google + ? The social network from Google has seen its share of controversy and many would argue that they were off to a rather rocky start. Whether or not marketers should use Google + at all has been a topic of rather intense debate around online marketing circles, but right now it has finally been settled. Small business owners and online marketers seem to agree that presence on Google + has a lot of advantages that outweigh the negative issues about the service, most notably better exposure to consumers in certain markets, as well as the potential for better results in SEO, as this is after all a Google service and Google is the biggest search engine.

Now that we know how marketers perceive the service, why don’t we find out how the individual users liked it? The results would surprise many. On the American Customer Satisfaction Index, Google + got the best grade out of all the networks. It beat Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Linked In by a relatively wide margin. Google + got a score of 78. Pinterest got 68, Twitter got 64, Linked In 63 and Facebook 61. The Index measures responses from customers of these networks based on various user experience factors. Google’s score shows quite a few things;

First, it’s obviously not perfect, but at least it’s much better than the competition and surprisingly a whole lot better than Facebook. Since individual consumers seem to love Google +, marketers need to immediately take this into consideration and take appropriate action. For those who haven’t yet joined the service, it just takes a few minutes to set up an account for your business. There is very little for you to lose and a whole lot to gain. Setting up a basic profile, with details and maybe a few pictures can be done in less than 15 minutes. For those who have an account, but it’s mainly just a placeholder, now would be the time to get things going on Google +. Upload some more content. Put up a few posts, or maybe photos related to your business. Share links and articles that are relevant to your industry. Remember, it doesn’t have to be completely new stuff, all you need to do is to link to content already on your site if you want to.

But what makes Google + so well received in the public opinion? We will take a more detailed look tomorrow.

Some Data on Email Open Rates

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Some Data on Email Open Rates

Are you wondering how many emails sent by marketers are actually opened and read, at least in part, by their intended recipients? Many online marketers and small business owners are actually asking themselves the same questions. We all know that email marketing is a powerful way to reach clients and potential clients in an effort to get them to generate more revenue for an online business. But emails are only useful if they are actually opened by the recipient. Otherwise, they simply rot in the recipient’s email box or end up getting deleted.

There are many reasons as to why an email doesn’t get opened. It could be because the recipient didn’t like the subject line and didn’t feel like reading the message. Or, they already get too many emails and don’t really have the time to pay individual attention to each of them. Then, there is another possibility, that the recipient created an email that’s just used when signing up for websites and is not their main email. They don’t really check it that often, sometimes emails go for months without even being looked at, as the user doesn’t receive any personal or important mails at that address.

But are more consumers opening their emails? A study recently done by Return Path gives a few details of this. During the period from March 2011 to March 2012, email opens have actually gone up. There is an increase of 82.40% of email opens during this period. Obviously, this is welcome news for marketers who want their message to be seen by their audience.

But one thing that should be noted is that mobile devices, such as smart phones, have accounted for 30% of all email opens during this period. A more detailed breakdown shows that all Apple devices, like the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad represented 85% of all email messages that were opened. Furthermore, email opens done on mobile devices were more likely to be done by users on weekends. For regular PC (laptop and desktop), the opens usually happened during the weekdays.

This is a useful piece of data for email marketers. An ever increasing number of internet users browse the web through a mobile device like a tablet or smart phone. Since Apple device users have a higher open rate than others, it would be beneficial for marketers to more aggressively promote their email lists to these users. On your mobile site, you can make sure that the email subscription option is featured more prominently. Perhaps there could be a certain incentive that you could give to mobile users so that they become more likely to open messages that come from your business. And since messages are more likely to be accessed during the weekend by these users, it would only be logical that you send out your more important emails to mobile users on Saturday or Sunday. This is where properly segmenting your email list by device type used could be very important as it will let you get more exposure for your messages.

Using Social Networks for B2B Networking

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Using Social Networks for B2B Networking

When it comes to using social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, many small business owners use these as a marketing and communication channel with their customers and potential customers. Of course, this is one of the main purposes of social media use among entrepreneurs and can indeed be a part, even a major one, of a business online marketing strategy. However, social networking can be a lot more than simply a tool to communicate with and market to your buyers. You can also use different social media websites to network with other businesses and find opportunities that could be profitable for you.

If you’re wondering about some of these uses, here are a few examples that you can consider:

  • Staff Recruiting and Hiring

Employers are increasingly turning to social media websites as a way to recruit staff, either as permanent full time employees, or for temporary assignment to a specific project. If you’re planning on hiring some staff, putting a notice on your social media pages is a great way to generate some responses. Doing so can save you time and money, as you would no longer need to post an ad on various job search websites. You could also simplify communications by answering questions from potential candidates directly over the social network.

  • Buying / Selling Equipment

Do you have any equipment that you don’t need anymore, such as machinery, furniture, vehicles, etc? In that case, posting a notice on your social networking page can get you some interested buyers. Again, one of the advantages is that it is a lot less costly than other online and offline methods of finding the right buyers, as all you would need to do is to post on your page, or perhaps take a look at other people’s pages and contact them to see if they would be interested. It can also work the other way around. If you’re interested in purchasing something for your business, such as a truck for your moving company, then you can take a look to see if somebody you know has one for sale, or post a notice on your page.

  • Finding Services That You Need

Are you looking for an inexpensive, but good quality web designer? Do you need a new VoIP service that is more reliable than what you’re using now? Here again, social media can be very helpful. You can make a post on your page and those who can provide the services can answer. Or at least they can point you in the right direction by giving you information on services that they’ve used in the past, as well as giving you their impressions on them.

  • Finding Various Business Opportunities

Are you looking to expand your business or to branch out into other areas of operation? Then networking with other entrepreneurs and business people can be a very good way of making that happen. No matter what kind of business opportunity you are into, you can find people who are interested in the same thing and can turn into valuable business partners.

More Efficient Use of Online Marketing: Checking Your Progress

More Efficient Use of Online Marketing: Checking Your Progress

If you own a local business and use the internet to promote it, then you’re probably concerned as to whether you’re getting the results that you’ve wanted from your marketing efforts. After all, nobody wants to spend time and money on online advertising only to make little progress with it. This is why it is very important for you to monitor your progress with internet marketing and see which of your strategies work and which ones don’t work as well. This will give you an idea as to whether you should keep doing what you’re already doing, or whether there are certain changes or improvements that would be in order for you.

While this sounds easy to say, keeping up with the performance of your online marketing efforts will require a bit of work, especially if you haven’t really been paying attention to the results that it’s been bringing you. This happens to many small business owners that get caught up with their main line of work, especially if their business has been doing quite well as of late.

The first thing that you would want to do is to make a list of all of your marketing and advertising channels that you’re using. Then, divide these into sub groups. So for example if you use social media and classified ads sites, you would have these 2 as main advertising types. Then you would list the specific social networking sites that you use for your business, as well as the classified ads websites that you post your ads to on a regular basis. The same can be applied to other methods of online marketing that your business uses, such as pay per click ads, where you can further drill down the traffic and results that you’re getting by each network, each specific ad campaign & ad copies, as well as individual text or banner ads that you’re running on the network. Remember to be as detailed as possible as this will help you optimize your efforts.

Now that you have this list done, you would need to track where you website traffic is coming from. If you haven’t already set up a tracking script (there are many free ones out there that you can use), look at your server logs to see where the traffic on your business website is coming from.

As for tracking conversions (visitors who became paying client or took other action that is profitable for you), there are many free scripts that you can use in order to see which clicks are converting, if your site is directly selling items to customers. Otherwise, if customers contact you by phone or walk into your place of business, then tracking conversions won’t be that easy since you will be limited to asking customers how they found out about your business.

If you’re satisfied with the results, then keep doing what you’re doing… but keep paying attention to where your traffic is coming from. If on the other hand, you want to improve some things, then we have some more tips for you tomorrow.

Better Marketing Habits to Establish: Part 3

Better Marketing Habits to Establish: Part 3

Are there any more online marketing tips that you should be applying to your business in 2012? Here is a final list of good pieces of advice that you can use to increase the results that you will be getting from your online marketing campaigns. As always, remember that these are just general tips and you can think up of your own online marketing strategies that will help you gain more from your online efforts.

  • Take Advantage of Different Advertising Opportunities

One thing that you should do at the start of this year is to review the online advertising and marketing methods that you’re using and see if they’re bringing you the success that you wanted. While it’s always a good thing to keep doing what works well, there might be some additional online marketing opportunities that you might want to explore to see if they would fit in well with the type of business that you’re running, as well as your budget and online objectives. For example, you could use social media marketing, video marketing, classified ads sites, media buying, etc. Do some research on the different advertising methods and how they work.

  • Create Both Short and Long Term Objectives

It’s important to have goals, but the term of these goals should also be considered. Make some goals for what you hope to do and accomplish now, within the current month. Then make some goals for the rest of the year. How would you want your business to grow? What other opportunities would you want to explore during the year? These are all good examples of what you could include in your long term online marketing plans.

  • Don’t Forget to Protect Your Data and Have Backup Plans

Nothing can ruin a business like data loss. While this isn’t a marketing strategy per se, it’s more of a business survival tip and is included here because many small business owners and independent online marketers don’t really do. Remember to make backups of both your local files on your PC, as well as of your business website. Viruses, hacking and equipment failures could have a disastrous effect on any business. Having recent and up to date backups can help minimize the damage and get you back up on your feet faster than ever. Having backup plans doesn’t simply involve protecting data, however. It also means knowing what to do when something unexpected happens. For example, one advertising network that you’re dealing with could go out of business. Or an affiliate network that you’ve been running offers for could go bankrupt and leave its affiliates holding the bag. Have some backup partners and marketing options that you could fall back on if something goes wrong with what you’re currently doing. Being prepared for the unexpected is a very good strategy, whether it’s for online business or any other line of commerce that you may be operating in.

Building a Good Small Business Website

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Building a Good Small Business Website

If you are going to be building a website for your small business, then there are certain things that you definitely need to know. The purpose of a business website is to help people who are interested in your business find out more about it and then contact you to purchase a product or service if you have something that interests them. To create your business website, you have a few choices. Either you can build the site yourself, or hire a web developer to do it for you. Many small business owners will prefer to create a website by themselves, primarily due to the availability of good tools that allow a website to be built without coding, and also due to the fact that professional web developers and designers might sometimes charge more than what some people would want to pay.

When you build your site, there are certain things that you need to keep in mind. Here is some information on the whole web building process that will be useful to anyone that is creating a website for their business.

  • First, Make a Plan

Before you begin building anything, it is important that you plan the overall look and feel of your website, as well as determine the kind of content that you will be placing on it. Also, you will need to determine what your website will do for your business. Will it be just a website that will present information about your business and encourage your site visitors to contact you, or will it be something a bit more advanced. If you are selling products, you could, for example, build an e-commerce site that would let people buy your stuff online, without needing to call you to place an order or to visit your location. If you offer services, then you can include an ordering system on your website as well. Planning your site is the first step in putting all the pieces together. Of course, you will be able to make changes as you go along, as well as after when your site has been put up.

  • Determine What Platform Your Site Will be Based On

A “platform” in web building usually refers to a content management system that will power your site and allow you to make easy changes to it. Of course, you do not have to use one if you don’t want to. If you want to build the simplest kind of website possible, then you can simply create a static HTML website that will need to be updated manually.

But to make things easier, there are several systems that you can use. Some are general, such as WordPress, Joomla or Drupal, which work well with any kind of website, due to the thousands of free themes, plugins and additions to these systems that can be used. If you are going to run an e-commerce website, then there are special e-commerce platforms like Zen Cart, Magento and OS Commerce that you can use to base your site on instead. It is a good idea to learn more about these systems and what they can do for you.

Can a Blog Help Your Business Site?

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Can a Blog Help Your Business Site?

Many small business owners have one main website which contains information about their company and their products. Sometimes it is an e-commerce site where customers can make purchases directly through the site. Obviously, having a website is useful, but what about a blog? Including a blog has many benefits. In fact, some online marketing studies have shown that sites which incorporate a blog get more traffic than a site without one. After all, who doesn’t want to attract more visitors to their website?

Besides the increased traffic, blogs can have many additional benefits for your site. Here are some of them:

  • They can increase your search engine ranking

Search engines such as Google love high quality blogs and having one on your site can do wonders to increase your search engine ranking. It can also provide you with useful backlinks back to your main site as well as relevant parts of it, such as product descriptions.

  • They can establish you as an authority in your niche

The purpose of a blog for a business is not really to sell anything, but rather to show you as an authority in your niche by providing content which your readers will find useful. You can give information about how to best use your products, news about your industry, as well as any advice or tips that your readers will appreciate.

  • Blogs give you another place to interact with your visitors

When you post articles on your blog, you can allow readers to leave comments. This is a great way to get feedback about your blog and your business. It is also an excellent way to answer questions that a customer might have about a certain product. Blog comments give your visitor an easy way to get in touch with you should they be interested in something that you offer, but might not be ready to buy it just yet. Of course, with blog comments there is always the issue of comment spam. However, there are various WordPress plugins that you can use to limit the amount of spam comments that you get. Of course, you can always approve each comment manually, thus eliminating most of the spam. Putting a notice that comments are moderated and approved manually will also serve to deter spammers.

Getting the Most out of Your Blog

To get the most out of a blog, it needs to be updated on a regular basis with fresh new content. This will not only help you when it comes to SEO, but will also be very useful at keeping your readers interested. After all, nobody wants to read a blog that seems “dead” and hasn’t had an update in several months. A good thing about blogs is that you can now include multimedia content such as video on them as well, so if you have a video that you would like to share with your readers, you can put it up on your blog as well.

Are there Any Alternatives to Adwords?

Are there Any Alternatives to Adwords?

Over the years, Google Adwords has become known as the dominant platform when it comes to pay per click advertising. There are plenty of business owners, as well as various internet marketers and affiliates who have made use of it. However, just because a service is popular, it doesn’t mean that it is good. There have been numerous complaints in webmaster and online marketing forums of people getting banned from Adwords for reasons that are not that clear. Often, when the client contacted Google, they would simply get a generic response stating that they violated the terms of service.

However, when it comes to pay per click advertising, Adwords is not the only game in town. Now that Bing has combined their pay per click platform with Yahoo Search Marketing, many people have jumped to create an account and start advertising there. According to a recent survey done by an internet marketing company, over half of small business owners who are using pay per click marketing are already using or are considering using Bing for their online marketing campaigns.

One of the complaints that many advertisers on Bing (formerly Microsoft AdCenter) had is that they weren’t receiving enough traffic. Well, it is a known fact that the Bing search engine receives far less traffic than Google. However, now that they are working together with Yahoo, this should resolve the complaint that many advertisers have. For those who are already used to Google Adwords, using Bing should not be much of a challenge, as the basic way that both advertising platforms work is very similar.

But when it comes to pay per click ads, there is another site that some marketers and business owners sometimes overlook: Facebook. Let’s not forget that this social networking site is the second most popular website on the internet, right after Google. So the traffic is obviously already there, you just need to put your ad in front of people who will be interested in your products. Facebook has a pay per click advertising platform that works in similar ways to Bing and Google Adwords.

The main difference, however is the way the traffic is targeted. Obviously, Facebook is not a search engine, so you can’t really target people that are looking for specific keywords. However, there are some other demographic options that you can use instead to target you ad. All that you have to do to get optimal results would be to target your ad so that it will only be shown to the demographic that would more closely match your customers. You can select things such as age, gender, relationship status, location, etc.

So as you can see, there are other pay per click advertising solutions besides Google Adwords out there. If you are considering using one, all you simply need to do is a bit of research on how it works and whether it is a good platform to use for promoting your specific products online.

Internet Marketing Use In Small Businesses

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Internet Marketing Use In Small Businesses

A recent survey taken in the United States by a technology consulting firm gives some very interesting figures about the use of internet marketing among small business owners. Based on the results, the majority (close to 80%) of small business owners had a website for their business. Of those that didn’t the majority were planning to create one in the coming year. This result is really not something that is surprising. It has been said time and time again that creating a website is beneficial for any business owner, even those that run a very small local enterprise. It makes them easier to find by their prospective clients, many of who exclusively use the internet in order to locate a business that they want to use.

While this first statistic was not especially surprising to anyone, what followed next may raise a few eyebrows. Of all business owners that had an online presence, nearly 40% were not entirely satisfied with the results that it was bringing them. Some were not happy with the way their website looked and wanted one that was more professional and more attractive to customers. Some others had a website and were quite happy with the way it looked and worked, but they were not convinced that it was doing them any good, as they did not see their website bringing them the amount of customers that they needed. It has also been said that small business owners (outside of the technology or marketing sectors) did not have much knowledge of how internet marketing worked and only a minority of them (14%) wanted to spend some time studying techniques to make their site better and to figure out how to deploy betting marketing efforts such as SEO and other internet advertising, in order to get more visitors to their website.

Ok, this maybe news and it is always nice to know some stats… but what does this mean to internet marketers? The bottom line is that there is a wide open market of local business owners who would want to use your services. Some of them want better websites. Some want to do some SEO on their site to get a better ranking on search engines. Others would want to use internet advertising in order to bring in more customers but are not sure which kind to use and are hesitant to buy ads on their own.

For those of you who are just learning internet marketing, or who are doing something else (CPA, Clickbank, eBay sales, affiliate stuff, etc.) and don’t get the results you want, this is a great opportunity. What you need to do is simple: learn how to create simple, yet functional websites. Learn how to optimize pages for SEO and build backlinks. Learn about the different kinds of online ads (business directories, classified ads sites, PPC, etc) and how they work. Compile a list of tutorials and learning materials (there are hundreds of videos, articles and blog posts on these topics, all free) and study them for about 2 weeks. Then you can start targeting local business owners and providing them your services as an internet marketer.

How to Do SEO for Local Businesses

If you own a local small business, then you are probably looking for ways to increase your business visibility in the online world. Well, there are various ways that this can be accomplished. For example, you can use social media or pay per click ad solutions. But let’s not forget that SEO is important too. However, many small business owners neglect to pay any attention to SEO, because they believe that there is way too much competition and that they will not be able to advance anywhere in the rankings.

But recently, Google has made some changes to the way search results are ranked when it comes to local keyword. The search engine uses geo location to determine the area where the user is located in and then displays search results which are relevant both to the user’s area and the keywords they were looking for.

How do you take advantage of this recent change to go up in the rankings? It is actually relatively easy, there are just a few things to do:

First, optimize your pages for both your main keyword and the area in which you do business. So for example if your main keyword is “plumbing” and you do business in Miami, then you would optimize your pages for the keywords “plumbing Miami” and “Miami plumbing”. Also, be sure that every one of your pages has a reference to your location on it. This can be easily done simply by putting your address and phone number in the footer of every page. Not only does this allow customers to see your contact info on each page, but will also let Google determine your location more easily.

If your business is not listed on Google Maps, then you should make sure that it is. Simply request a listing and it will appear in the results in the next few weeks. Local business listings appear on Google Maps together with web sites, so it will make it very easy for your customers to find you.

To optimize your website for “local SEO”, it is also a good idea to list your business in as many online business directories as possible. Not only will this potentially give you traffic coming from the directory itself, but it will also give you some very valuable backlinks as well. Backlinks that are coming from other sites that are related to your area, such as local business associations, chambers of commerce, etc. are also very helpful in this scenario.

While doing SEO may seem complicated, in reality it is not. You just need to have the proper information and take time to do the right actions. Remember that SEO is not meant to replace, but rather to work together with other types of online advertising that your business uses, so you can still keep using Adwords or social media ads in addition to deploying efforts to get your site to rise through the rankings.

Selling Websites To Small Businesses? Here Are Some Quick Tips

Do you market web site creation to small business owners? If you do you may have come across some business owners who are reluctant to get an online presence. Here are some of the most common objections and their responses.

I don’t want to sell anything online so I don’t need a website.

Even though you don’t plan on selling your products or services on the internet directly, customers who are interested in a type of product or service that you offer will search online for someone that can provide it to them. According to recent statistics, people of all ages are increasingly turning to the internet when shopping. You may have the best quality and the best prices, but if they can’t find you online, chances are they won’t even know your business exists and you may lose many customers that way. A website with just a list of your products and your prices can go a long way.

It is too complicated to maintain, I’m not good with computers.

Having a website doesn’t require much in terms of computer skills these days. There are simple tools that you can use to update your site with new information or products. It is very easy to figure out once you get the hang of it.

I don’t want to spend money on a website, it’s too expensive.

Web design, as well as web hosting services have gotten much more affordable in the past few years, mainly due to increased competition from various service providers and an increase in the number of customers that these providers get. As your website is a business tool, it will help you get more clients and thus get more sales.

If you run a small business that only provides one main service, such as a moving company, you don’t need a complicated website. A simple site with a description of your services, your rates, some background about your company and your contact information will be enough to inform your customers. You don’t have to get a site with fancy graphics, videos or multimedia content if it won’t be useful for you.

I’ve heard all of these stories about hackers attacking business websites. I’m scared this will happen to me.

Most of the news coverage surrounding these incidents is overblown by the media. The majority of recent attacks are not actually security breaches where private information was stolen, but rather denial of service attacks designed to flood a web server with data to bring it offline. These types of attacks are mostly targeted against large companies and governments by people who have a grudge against these entities for whatever reason. As a small business owner, your website is unlikely to become the target of such an attack.

I already advertise in the newspaper or distribute fliers with info about my products. These methods have been effective for me so far, what’s the use of changing?

Setting up your website and promoting your business in the online world doesn’t mean that you will have to stop other marketing methods that you use. Internet marketing is designed to complement, rather than replace other marketing activities. Don’t forget, some people don’t read newspapers (they get all their news online) and throw any advertising fliers that they get in their mailbox straight in the trash can. By having an online presence, you will be able to get in touch with a larger segment of the population.
