Some rogue marketing providers may engage in practices such as blackhat SEO techniques, forum spamming, email spam, creating social media apps that redirect traffic to a site without the user’s consent, promoting websites through adware that is difficult for a user to get rid of, etc. If you want to build a long term business, then staying away from these types of practices is the way to go.
