Google May Still be on Top – But Don’t Forget Bing

Everyone that has used a computer in the last decade will have heard of Google search. There are many articles talking about how Google is number one in the search market and how it’s expected to keep it’s place as King of Search for a long, long time. Obviously, any potential competitors will be facing an uphill battle if they want to create a better search engine than them. Many online marketers and business owners believe that if you want to be successful online, you need to optimize everything about your site so that it’s easy to find on Google. While this is definitely true, one fact that is often overlooked, even by some of the SEO experts, is that Google isn’t the only game in town.

There have been some market share numbers released a few weeks ago by Compete and comScore. Google may be popular in search, but what may be surprising to some is that it doesn’t have 99% of the search market cornered as many would want you to think. In fact, Google has approximately 67% of search market share. The rest is spread mainly among Yahoo! And Bing.

Yahoo has experienced many problems recently in keeping it’s search engine attractive to web surfers and the recent studies show that their market share dropped to around 14% of all search queries. Bing, on the other hand is growing and is getting more use as of the last months. In fact, 20% of all web searches are now being done on Bing.

What does this mean to you, as an online marketer? First, you need to accept the fact that not everyone will be using Google when they perform queries online. The reasons for this are too many to name here and are themselves open to debate and speculation. But the fact remains: Bing can bring you the targeted traffic that you’re looking for on your website. Less than Google, sure, but at approximately 20% of all web searches, it can still deliver a good chunk to you if you know how to take full advantage of it.

One thing that you can do is learn more about SEO and specifically how it relates to Bing. While the basic principles are essentially the same, there are certain on and off site factors that you can tinker around with that will help you get better SERPs on Bing, without compromising your current position on Google. In fact, it has been shown that getting your site to move up in Bing’s rankings can often be a lot simpler than on Google.

We all know that Bing isn’t too likely to take away a large portion of Google’s market share anytime soon. But with 20% of all searches and growing, it remains a big player in the online world and should not be ignored by marketers that are trying to get the most traffic possible from search engines.

New Kindle Fire May Boost Popularity of Tablets

New Kindle Fire May Boost Popularity of Tablets

There has been some talk in technology blogs about Amazon working on a new smartphone that may be a viable competitor to the Apple iPhone. But for now, nothing has been made official yet and Amazon’s event focused on the Kindle without announcing a new smartphone.

Some new versions of the Kindle have been released, which aim to make the tablet even more popular than it is right now. Upgrades have been made to the 7 inch Kindle Fire, which is now priced at $159. The 7 inch Kindle is now available in HD at a price of $199, plus 2 new versions with an 8.9 inch display are available, one of which has 4G connectivity. This makes it quite obvious that Amazon is seeking to take some market share away from Apple in the tablet market. This seems to be working somehow, since the Kindle Fire is the second most popular tablet, after the iPad, of course.

If you want to see the specifications of the new Kindles and how they compare to the iPad, there are plenty of technology news articles that provide more details. What’s more interesting to us is the fact that tablet usage is growing and how one can profit from this expansion as a marketer or business owner.

Amazon’s strategy is to profit from content sales for their mobile devices. The company has even taken shots at Apple, saying that it’s better to try to make money by selling content than by making upgrades to hardware. And in a way, they are right.

The demand for tablet based content is expected to grow as an increasing number of people get a tablet of some sort, whether it’s the Kindle, the iPad or any other one. Publishing eBooks and selling them on the Amazon marketplace is still a popular source of revenue for many, especially amateur authors who are seeking to get their works read. But the written word isn’t the only type of content that consumers want. Multimedia content, such as video and apps are also in high demand. This explains why there is a lot of demand for developers who can make applications that will run on tablet devices. Productivity tools, games, communications programs and many other applications are being downloaded by tablet users.

These users also browse the web on their devices. Marketers need to take a look at some numbers and statistics, in an effort to see what web based content tablet users commonly seek out, how they behave with regards to online advertising and which products and services they commonly buy when using the web on their mobile devices. This will allow the creation of advertising campaigns that are specifically targeted to tablet users, as many advertising services already allow marketers to create specific campaigns that will show only to users of tablets.

The devices will change and evolve over time, just like the PC has changed. But one thing that will remain is that a new opportunity has been created for entrepreneurs and will remain there for quite some time.

Some of Facebook’s Biggest Changes in 2012: Part 2

Some of Facebook’s Biggest Changes in 2012: Part 2

Yesterday, we’ve seen some changes that Facebook has made or is planning to make in 2012. But there are a few more. It is important that marketers remain vigilant to any changes that the social network makes. This even holds true for those who don’t rely too heavily on Facebook for their advertising, as new changes could bring increased opportunities for them and they may want to make social media a bigger part of their overall marketing strategy. Here are a few more of these 2012 changes:

Unpublished Page Posts. One of the most common complaints among Facebook marketers is targeting, or rather lack thereof. While Facebook has some good analytics tools that let you see who subscribes to your page, one thing that has been criticized about the site is that it didn’t provide many options to target specific groups of individuals with your posts. Everyone saw the same content, period. But with Unpublished Page Posts, this is slowly changing. Marketers are now able to target specific fan segments. When the option gets used, the post will not appear on the Timeline of the marketer. Rather, it will be sent directly to the targeted users news feeds. This makes sending relevant content to specific subsets of fans a lot easier and has the opportunity to increase conversion and click through rates.

Specific Permission Levels for Facebook Page Admins. In order to give businesses more tools for the management of their Facebook pages, different permission levels for page admins have been launched in May. The current permission levels are Manager, Content Creator, Moderator, Advertiser and Insights Analyst. This change makes it easier for larger organizations to manage their presence on the social networking sites by assigning different roles and privileges to different people.

Better Facebook Integration in Bing Search Results. While Google is the undisputed champion of the search engine world, Bing is a close second. Anyone serious about building their online presence and getting maximum results from their marketing efforts can’t ignore this. Bing has recently added a social media sidebar which pulls data from the biggest social networks, allowing more integration between traditional SERPs and social data. If a user is logged in to a social networking account such as Facebook, they will get social posts in search results, plus have the ability to share search results directly from the side bar with their Facebook friends.

Addition of Trending Articles. Users will now see relevant news articles in their Facebook news feeds. The order in which the articles appear will vary according to how much their friends have interacted with the news content. If a user has a lot of friends who have liked or simply read a news article, then there is a higher chance that it will be featured prominently in their own news feed. This is obviously welcome by many marketers who use news marketing as part of their overall strategy.

These are some of the biggest changes that have been made by Facebook in 2012. As usual, things can change quickly, so marketers should stay on top of social media news to see what is going on with Facebook and other social networks.

Taking Full Advantage of Mobile Traffic

Taking Full Advantage of Mobile Traffic

It is a fact that the devices that we use to access the internet have changed. Of course, the regular PC, desktop or laptop, is still the main way for the world’s internet users to get online. But the PC is rapidly losing “market share” to mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets. Now that the Microsoft Surface is making big news and that there is speculation that Apple is going to unveil yet another version of its iPad as an “iPad Mini” with similar features but a smaller form factor, many online marketers are starting to pay attention to the fact that not all their traffic will be coming from PC users. In fact, an ever growing number of website visits are made from other devices, most notably smart phones, followed by tablets. And it’s not just site visits that are made. Visitors are also profitable for site owners because they make purchases. Signing up for services, buying digital goods and even purchasing physical merchandise just like they would on a PC.

One question that comes to mind is what online entrepreneurs should do about it to take better advantage of this new trend and to be among the first to profit from it. There are a few easy tips which a webmaster or online marketer can follow:

The most important thing is ensuring that the websites you own either have a mobile version, or at least are compatible with the common mobile browsers. There are free online services that would allow you to test your site’s compatibility. Remember that if a user can’t get your site to display properly on their device, they will probably do what comes naturally: hit the back button and go somewhere else, which will potentially result in lost sales and revenue for your business.

A second thing would be to understand exactly what mobile platforms are principally used by your users and what these mobile users do on your website. By taking a look at server logs and statistics, you are able to see how many of your visitors come to your website by using a device other than a PC. You can also see which sections of your site they visit the most and what they do on it. Do they mainly browse for information, or are they looking to buy something that you offer? Remember that trends in mobile platforms may change and new types of devices can appear in the future, so it is best if your site is easily compatible with all mobile browsers and not just aimed at a specific one, unless your main niche is specifically aimed at users of a certain platform (i.e. selling accessories and providing information on Android based mobile phones).

There are a few other ways that you can take full advantage of your traffic which comes from mobile devices and to profit from it. We will take a look at some of the ideas you can implement on your site tomorrow.

Mobile Phone Users Actually Like Mobile Advertising

Mobile Phone Users Actually Like Mobile Advertising

Digital advertising can come in many formats, such as search ads, content ads, personalized social media ads, video ads that play before a user can access content, etc. Then, there’s mobile advertising.

One of the main issues of digital advertising is how well it’s received by the users. The questions are: do the users targeted by the ads welcome them, or oppose them. And more importantly, do they actually pay attention to the ads, or just do their best to ignore or skip over them. The last part is of great importance, as it’s not sufficient to just display an ad to a user, but a marketer also needs to create some engagement. This is one of the main reasons why pop up ads are in decline now, even though they were very popular about a decade ago. They had the effect of annoying users, who simply closed them without even looking. To take things even further, “popup blocker” tools and browser add ons have gained so much popularity that they’re now a regular feature in web browsers.

When it comes to mobile advertising, do users like the ads that they receive and do they pay attention to them? According to information from a study done by the Interactive Advertising Bureau in May of 2012, the majority of survey respondents (70 percent), saw mobile ads in a favorable light, viewing them as an invitation to learn more about a certain product, rather than an unwanted intrusion.

The survey also asked smart phone users what they used their phone for when they were shopping. 28% of respondents stated they used it to find out more about a product or service, 18% used a phone to look up store locations and 12% used a web enabled phone to compare the prices of certain items.

Even though their numbers are growing, there are still few mobile phone users who reported making purchases of non digital items on their mobile phone (5% of respondents).

What this shows is that, for now, users consider their smart phone to be a platform with which they look up information, rather than to make purchases on. They still prefer to buy most items from a retail location, or from a regular PC.

This means that marketers need to ensure that their brands and products are visible to mobile phone users. This can be accomplished by building a mobile friendly version of their website, by using advertising channels that target smart phone users, and if they have a physical retail location, by ensuring that their business can easily be found by someone who is out of their house and looking for either a specific business, or a product / service that they would need but don’t really know where they can find it.

Using Google Analytics Social Reports

Using Google Analytics Social Reports

As a growing amount of traffic is generated from social networking websites, marketers needed a tool that would allow them to see exactly how their social advertising campaigns are going and whether they’re actually being profitable for them. Of course, we all know that one of the main advantages of online advertising is that its results are highly measurable and thus marketers should get a good idea of just how much results each of their efforts are producing.

Google Analytics is perhaps one of the most popular platforms for tracking a website’s traffic sources and analyzing the behavior of visitors. The Social tab was there for quite some time now, but new types of reports are have been rolled out by Google in the past month.

The overview report presents a main dashboard that should be familiar to those using other Google products, such as Adwords. It simply presents an overview of the information that is available in greater detail in the other tabs.

The Sources tab shows the source of a website’s traffic, separated by different social networking services. Users can see the number of visits, page views, the average visit duration, as well as the average number of pages that each visitor has seen on the website.

One very useful tab in Google Analytics is the Conversions Report. This one lets a marketer see which of the social sources drove the most conversions as well as the value of these conversions. This lets you see which of your social media campaigns are responsible for bringing the most sales to your website. If you’re selling anything on your site, this can definitely be a useful part of Google Analytics to look at.

The Social Plugins Report gives you a summary of the pages on your site as well as information regarding the social activity that happened on the different pages. You can thus see how many visitors took a social action, such as sharing the page, clicking on a Tweet, clicking the Facebook “Like” icon, etc. This is a good way to measure just how “engaged” your visitors are when it comes to sharing content on your website through social networks.

Developing a successful online marketing strategy may not always be an easy thing to accomplish for a marketer. Many spend a lot of time and money on their campaigns hoping to not only bring much needed traffic to their website, but also to have this traffic actually convert into profitable, paying visitors. This is why properly tracking and analyzing what your visitors are doing is something that is absolutely necessary to ensure the success of your online business. Google Analytics is a powerful tool that you can use for this purpose. It can not only help you track visitors coming from social networking sites, but also has interesting features that let you better understand your visitors that are coming from other sources too, such as display ads or email marketing campaigns.

Get the Right Tools for Online Marketers: Is The Chromebook a Good Choice?

Get the Right Tools for Online Marketers: Is The Chromebook a Good Choice?

If you are an online entrepreneur or marketer, then you will probably be doing most of your work online. To get online, you will probably use a PC, or maybe another device such as a laptop, netbook, tablet or a smart phone. There has been a lot of talk lately about cloud computing and the benefits that it can bring to business users. However, is it time to switch to cloud based applications yet?

When we are talking about cloud computing, one should know what exactly this concept means. It is actually quite simple to understand. It means that your applications are running on a remote server online (on the “cloud”), as well as the majority of your files can be saved remotely. This has the advantage that your files will be accessible from anywhere and that your programs are actually running on the server, you are merely viewing them on your PC or other device.

One mobile computing device that has caused a lot of talk in the IT industry lately is the Google Chromebook. It is basically a netbook, a smaller version of a laptop, that runs on the Google Chrome OS. With it, all applications are hosted on Google’s cloud servers. Therefore, to do anything useful with it (except play Angry Birds, which can be downloaded to it and runs locally), you need to be online.

Now the problem is that the current set of applications available is quite limited. It is mostly designed for business users that want to browse the web, check their email and remotely connect to another server or use a remote desktop tool on a regular PC.

Now since most applications that are used by internet marketers, such as SEO tools, web design applications, graphics tools for creating logos and ads, etc. will not run on the Google Chrome OS, we can see that the device is quite useless for most online marketers.

There is also the issue of price. It is much more expensive than other netbooks, without bringing in any features that are significantly superior to them. Sure, the Google Chrome OS may be a simple interface if all you need to do is browse, but if you really love it, then there is another way to get it without needing to spend almost $500 on the Chromebook. There is actually an open source version of the same OS made by Google called the Chromium OS, which can be downloaded for free and installed on any desktop, laptop or netbook computer.

Many online marketers would find that getting a netbook would be an excellent way to catch up on work while outside their home, thanks to a very portable mini laptop. However currently, it would seem that the Chromebook does not really have anything that outperforms some of the other netbooks on the market today, which run Windows or Linux and sell as low as $150.

Can Using Internet Marketing Forums Be Useful for New Marketers?

Can Using Internet Marketing Forums Be Useful for New Marketers?

In your quest to get the necessary information to become an effective online marketer, you may have come across some internet marketing forums. Now if you are new to internet marketing, you may be asking yourself: can these forums be useful for me? And what are the things that make an internet marketing forum good?

For the first question, the answer is definitely yes. On internet marketing forums, you will find plenty of information and methods that you can apply to make money online. You will also be able to find some tools, software as well as services that can help you accomplish whatever you are doing. The advantage of a forum is that unlike a simple guide, article or blog post, the content is “alive”. This means that not only can one person post information, but others can respond to it by adding additional data to make it more useful or ask questions about things they are unsure of, which will help more people understand the method.

A good internet marketing forum to participate in is one where:

  • New internet marketers are welcomed and not looked down upon, or taken advantage of by other, more experienced members of the forum.
  • Useful posts are made and new information is shared by members on a daily basis.
  • There is a community spirit where people genuinely want to help each other, and not just take things for themselves.

Now, many new internet marketers want to know what are the best internet marketing forums they can join? Well, there are dozens of them, however here are the top free.

The Warrior Forum. This is the oldest and most respected internet marketing forum on the internet. You will find lots of useful methods for making money on the internet there, which are geared at marketers of all experience levels. You will see that the crowd is very diverse there, with participants ranging from newcomers to the industry, to those who have made millions of dollars selling their own products or by being affiliates.

Digital Point. Another very popular forum that is neatly organized in various categories, such as affiliate marketing, web site development, content creation, selling on eBay, using Pay Per Click ads, etc. There is also a very active marketplace where buyers and sellers meet to sell websites, content, traffic, advertising space, etc. Note that this forum is very popular with people from many countries in the world, not just the US. Therefore, you might sometimes see posts written in “bad” English. But everyone there is working together to attain their goals in online marketing, no matter where they are from.

WickedFire. A forum that attracts many of the top affiliate marketers in the industry. Very useful place to learn new methods and to discuss online business. Just a note though, you will sometimes find “adult” jokes and rather strong language in some posts, so it is not for the squeamish or those who get offended easily. But the content is nonetheless very useful and the people there are truly serious about their business, even if they sometimes like to crack jokes at each other.

Using Video Sharing Sites For More Traffic

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Using Video Sharing Sites For More Traffic

There are many ways to use a video sharing site such as YouTube in order to get traffic to your website. Since broadband internet access has made viewing and sharing online videos a lot more accessible, many online marketers have jumped on the occasion of using various video sharing sites to get traffic to their sites. Video sharing sites like YouTube are not just places where you can watch some funny video of a dog riding a skateboard or a kid falling off his bike. When used correctly, they can turn into a powerful marketing tool for you.

The first question that comes to mind is what kind of content you should create. Many people believe that creating videos is a time consuming task which will take hours to complete. While anything may seem difficult at first, it will actually become quite easy as you get more used to it.

As an online marketer, you probably already know the importance of creating unique articles to have some useful content on your site and to submit to various online directories in order to get traffic to your site. Well, it is possible to turn these articles into short videos.

All you need to do is to take the content of the articles and to change it into a “presentation” format, similar to PowerPoint slides. You would then do a voice over, explaining the various parts while the viewer follows on screen. This works very well, as some people don’t like reading long articles but instead pay more attention to what you have to say when you turn it into a video. At the end of the video, you would invite the viewer to visit your website to get more information.

Another possibility is creating instructional (how to) videos. These will give the viewer information on how to do something that is related to your website’s niche. It takes a bit more effort to get done and will probably involve taking a video camera and actually filming things. But if you are in a niche where most of the things are done on the computer (such as website building, “make money online”, investing, etc) you can simply use a screen recording software and voice over to provide explanations to the viewer.

One thing not to do is to create videos that are simply a commercial for your site. Those who browse video sharing sites rarely do so to see advertising material. Provide something that will be interesting and captivating to the viewer and you will have a better chance of them visiting your site after looking at your video. If you create content that is useful and interesting, you will find that viewers will share it with other, either through social networking sites or by embedding your video on their own websites or blogs. All of this means more potential traffic and more potential customers for your business.

Is It Possible To Apply For A CPA Network Without Having A Website?

Is It Possible To Apply For A CPA Network Without Having A Website?

Many people who are new to CPA marketing are wondering whether it is possible to get approved for a CPA network account even though you don’t currently have a website to run offers on. The answer is definitely yes. A lot of experienced marketers don’t even have a main website. Rather, they either directly link to the offer’s page or build a dedicated landing page for each offer that they run. CPA networks understand that there are various ways to promote their offers that don’t necessarily involve having a website.

Even though you may not need a site, it is still recommended to get your own domain name to use for your email address. The domain name could be the name of the business that you’ve set up for your online marketing activities, such as AcmeMarketing.com. If you are just starting out and don’t want to register a business for your online activities, you can simply use something such as RobSmithWebMarketing.com. You would then have an email address at your own domain name. This looks a lot more professional and serious than using a free email service such as Hotmail or Yahoo. You are also more likely to get approved for an account this way, as CPA networks tend to view registrations with no web site and a free email address with suspicion, due to the fact that the majority of fraud comes from users with free emails.

When you sign up, you will be asked how you will be advertising the offers that the network has. Since you don’t have a site, it is important for you to be as specific as possible when describing your plans here. If you are planning to run pay per click campaigns, you would indicate that you are a PPC marketer and tell the network the PPC networks that you would be using to run their campaigns like Google Adwords, Bing, Yahoo Search Marketing, etc. If you would be promoting offers by social networks, describe your strategy for doing so, such as which social networks will you be using and how you plan to draw traffic to the offers.

CPA networks will also ask you about your overall experience with internet marketing. If you have run any affiliate or CPA offers before (even if you weren’t that successful), list that on your application. For example, if you have promoted Clickbank products, you would mark that down under your experience. The networks are typically looking for people who at least have an understanding of how internet marketing works and prefer people who already have acquired some experience, even if you have only made a few sales.

Once you submit your application, expect to receive a phone call form the network within a few days. They will want to confirm the information on your application and will ask you some questions regarding your past experience and your objectives with regards to internet marketing.

Planning An Ad Campaign Effectively

Planning An Ad Campaign Effectively

If you are going to place some ads online, you need to be sure that your entire ad campaign has been planned well so that you can maximize your chances of success. Here are some thing that you can do to make that happen:

Determine what your objectives are

When you promote affiliate or CPA offers, you naturally want to earn as much commissions as possible. It’s always a good thing to set certain goals for each advertising campaign that you make. How many sales / leads are you planning to get each day on each offer that you are running?

Set up a budget

If you are going to use paid advertising methods, such as pay per click ads, media buys, etc., think about how much money you will be willing to spend on each campaign per day. If you are running several ads at the same time, split up your budget accordingly, depending on what offer you want to promote in priority.

Think of the creatives that you will use

If you use text based ads, think up of some ads that will catch the attention of the reader, all while maintaining a good traffic quality. See what your competitors are doing and what their ads look like. Remember that while CTR is important, conversions are what you are after. If the offer that you are promoting requires the user to buy something, avoid using words that could make the reader think they are getting something for free. You will simply end up with hundreds of visits from freebie seekers and very little, if any, actual conversions. If you use graphic ads, set up ads using several different banners. Remember that the banner with the highest conversion rate on the network may not always be the best converting one for you.

Set up a way to track your results

Unless you are only running one campaign with one ad, having a solution to track where the most visitors and conversions are coming from is crucial to being a successful marketer. This will allow you to see exactly which ads and which keywords are the most profitable for you. There are many free scripts out there that you can install on your landing pages which can help you do just that. Even something as simple as using a different landing page for each ad copy can help you track your results.

Be prepared to make changes

While some “experts” out there claim that they have a method to make money online which is simply “set and forget”, the truth is actually different. Sure, you can simply leave things running for a few days, weeks even without optimizing or making changes. But remember that the whole “online business” industry is rapidly evolving. Therefore, you need to monitor your results on a daily basis, and make adjustments such as changing your landing pages, removing keywords that are not profitable, changing you ad copy a bit, etc.
