Which Tablet is the Most Popular?

It is of course no surprise that tablets are gaining a lot of popularity among consumers and therefore there will be a lot more traffic coming from these mobile devices. Increasingly, webmasters, online entrepreneurs and affiliates are making tablet friendly versions of their websites in order to increase conversions by ensuring that users get a page that displays properly on their device, thus boosting overall user experience. But which tablet is really the most used among consumers right now?

Recent numbers show that while Android based tablet devices are gaining a bigger market share day by day, there has yet to be a significant increase in web traffic from these devices. Therefore, as many could have guessed by now, the iPad is currently at the top of tablet generated traffic. Market Watch recently published the results of a study that was done by mobile publishing firm Onswipe. According to the report results, over 98 percent of tablet based traffic was generated from the iPad. This means that less than 2 percent of traffic is coming from other tablets. Other sources tell a similar tale. A Tech Guru study shows that 94% of all web traffic from tablet devices involves users with an iPad.

There are some other interesting facts that came to light with the study. Users on an iPad are a lot more likely to spend time on a web page. In fact, iPad users spend 56% more time on a site than iPhone users. This can be explained by the bigger screen and better suitability for web browsing of the device, which makes it more comfortable for users to actually spend time reading what’s on a page.

As for time spent using the device, the Kindle Fire from Amazon actually outranks the iPad. However, this shouldn’t come too much as a surprise to online marketers, considering the fact that the original Kindle was meant to be used as an e-reader to view books and documents, rather than as an internet browsing device. This is something that is still seen today. A lot of users who have a Kindle Fire use it to read books and online magazines and spend very little time browsing the web, even if the new version of the Kindle is in color and offers web browsing, plus integrated social networking functionality. Unless Amazon’s device gains a lot of market share in the near future, this isn’t expected to change much either.

What does all of this mean to marketers? Users of iPad tablets spend a lot of time browsing the web with their devices and it is rapidly becoming a replacement for the full featured PC in the hands of many users. Developing websites that are compatible with the iPad, as well as creating advertising campaigns that are focused towards the users of this tablet are some things that marketers can do to profit from it. Of course, it is possible that Android based devices may pick up some steam in the coming years, but for now, they still have a lot of catching up to do.

Google May Still be on Top – But Don’t Forget Bing

Everyone that has used a computer in the last decade will have heard of Google search. There are many articles talking about how Google is number one in the search market and how it’s expected to keep it’s place as King of Search for a long, long time. Obviously, any potential competitors will be facing an uphill battle if they want to create a better search engine than them. Many online marketers and business owners believe that if you want to be successful online, you need to optimize everything about your site so that it’s easy to find on Google. While this is definitely true, one fact that is often overlooked, even by some of the SEO experts, is that Google isn’t the only game in town.

There have been some market share numbers released a few weeks ago by Compete and comScore. Google may be popular in search, but what may be surprising to some is that it doesn’t have 99% of the search market cornered as many would want you to think. In fact, Google has approximately 67% of search market share. The rest is spread mainly among Yahoo! And Bing.

Yahoo has experienced many problems recently in keeping it’s search engine attractive to web surfers and the recent studies show that their market share dropped to around 14% of all search queries. Bing, on the other hand is growing and is getting more use as of the last months. In fact, 20% of all web searches are now being done on Bing.

What does this mean to you, as an online marketer? First, you need to accept the fact that not everyone will be using Google when they perform queries online. The reasons for this are too many to name here and are themselves open to debate and speculation. But the fact remains: Bing can bring you the targeted traffic that you’re looking for on your website. Less than Google, sure, but at approximately 20% of all web searches, it can still deliver a good chunk to you if you know how to take full advantage of it.

One thing that you can do is learn more about SEO and specifically how it relates to Bing. While the basic principles are essentially the same, there are certain on and off site factors that you can tinker around with that will help you get better SERPs on Bing, without compromising your current position on Google. In fact, it has been shown that getting your site to move up in Bing’s rankings can often be a lot simpler than on Google.

We all know that Bing isn’t too likely to take away a large portion of Google’s market share anytime soon. But with 20% of all searches and growing, it remains a big player in the online world and should not be ignored by marketers that are trying to get the most traffic possible from search engines.

New Kindle Fire May Boost Popularity of Tablets

New Kindle Fire May Boost Popularity of Tablets

There has been some talk in technology blogs about Amazon working on a new smartphone that may be a viable competitor to the Apple iPhone. But for now, nothing has been made official yet and Amazon’s event focused on the Kindle without announcing a new smartphone.

Some new versions of the Kindle have been released, which aim to make the tablet even more popular than it is right now. Upgrades have been made to the 7 inch Kindle Fire, which is now priced at $159. The 7 inch Kindle is now available in HD at a price of $199, plus 2 new versions with an 8.9 inch display are available, one of which has 4G connectivity. This makes it quite obvious that Amazon is seeking to take some market share away from Apple in the tablet market. This seems to be working somehow, since the Kindle Fire is the second most popular tablet, after the iPad, of course.

If you want to see the specifications of the new Kindles and how they compare to the iPad, there are plenty of technology news articles that provide more details. What’s more interesting to us is the fact that tablet usage is growing and how one can profit from this expansion as a marketer or business owner.

Amazon’s strategy is to profit from content sales for their mobile devices. The company has even taken shots at Apple, saying that it’s better to try to make money by selling content than by making upgrades to hardware. And in a way, they are right.

The demand for tablet based content is expected to grow as an increasing number of people get a tablet of some sort, whether it’s the Kindle, the iPad or any other one. Publishing eBooks and selling them on the Amazon marketplace is still a popular source of revenue for many, especially amateur authors who are seeking to get their works read. But the written word isn’t the only type of content that consumers want. Multimedia content, such as video and apps are also in high demand. This explains why there is a lot of demand for developers who can make applications that will run on tablet devices. Productivity tools, games, communications programs and many other applications are being downloaded by tablet users.

These users also browse the web on their devices. Marketers need to take a look at some numbers and statistics, in an effort to see what web based content tablet users commonly seek out, how they behave with regards to online advertising and which products and services they commonly buy when using the web on their mobile devices. This will allow the creation of advertising campaigns that are specifically targeted to tablet users, as many advertising services already allow marketers to create specific campaigns that will show only to users of tablets.

The devices will change and evolve over time, just like the PC has changed. But one thing that will remain is that a new opportunity has been created for entrepreneurs and will remain there for quite some time.

Why Google + Has Happier Users

Why Google + Has Happier Users

The data from the American Customer Satisfaction Index is in and the results may have surprised quite a few in the online marketing world. Google + is the social network which currently boasts the highest rate of user satisfaction.

Does this mean that Google + will soon become the king of social media and take Facebook’s place? In theory, anything could happen in the social media world. Remember when MySpace was hugely popular among all categories of users a few years ago? Now, it lost the majority of its market share to Facebook and has been re-branded as a site that mainly caters to music fans, as well as people with “alternative” tastes, such as those into the punk or goth lifestyle. However, to be realistic, this isn’t something that is likely to happen with Facebook anytime soon, if at all. What is more likely, however is that Google + will keep on growing and attract more users.

There were several reasons cited as to why users were more satisfied with Google + than with Facebook. Here are some of them:

  • A feeling that Google + has more respect for users privacy than Facebook. In the study to measure customer satisfaction, 42 percent of respondents have stated that Google has an “excellent” commitment to protecting their privacy. Much fewer Facebook users have rated them as “excellent” for that point. Online privacy and security concerns are now becoming more important than ever for many users, especially those older than 35. People want control over who gets to see their data and how it’s used. Without getting into specifics, it just seems that according to the public opinion, Google + does a better job than Facebook on this point.
  • A better experience on mobile devices. We’ve said this time and time again. A lot of people now get online with a mobile device. Their numbers will just keep on growing as mobile device sales are up, up and up everywhere in the world. According to user perceptions, Google + offers much better functionality for its mobile apps, especially the apps for Apple products such as the iPhone and iPad, which have received very positive reviews both from professional IT reviewers and individual consumers.
  • Google + offers a better approach to advertising. Online advertising is everywhere and for many people reading this, it is their career and the reason why their business is in existence. Users are far more satisfied with the advertising scheme of Google + as opposed to Facebook for one huge reasons: there aren’t any ads on Google +. No search ads and no banner ads. Google understands that displaying pay per click or CPM ads on its social network may not go too well with users. This is why it uses a different advertising scheme, such as showing recommendations and reviews from friends. This, based on what we’ve seen so far, goes through a whole lot better with users, who don’t really like being distracted or bothered with banner and text ads when they’re busy socializing.

Taking Full Advantage of Mobile Traffic

Taking Full Advantage of Mobile Traffic

It is a fact that the devices that we use to access the internet have changed. Of course, the regular PC, desktop or laptop, is still the main way for the world’s internet users to get online. But the PC is rapidly losing “market share” to mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets. Now that the Microsoft Surface is making big news and that there is speculation that Apple is going to unveil yet another version of its iPad as an “iPad Mini” with similar features but a smaller form factor, many online marketers are starting to pay attention to the fact that not all their traffic will be coming from PC users. In fact, an ever growing number of website visits are made from other devices, most notably smart phones, followed by tablets. And it’s not just site visits that are made. Visitors are also profitable for site owners because they make purchases. Signing up for services, buying digital goods and even purchasing physical merchandise just like they would on a PC.

One question that comes to mind is what online entrepreneurs should do about it to take better advantage of this new trend and to be among the first to profit from it. There are a few easy tips which a webmaster or online marketer can follow:

The most important thing is ensuring that the websites you own either have a mobile version, or at least are compatible with the common mobile browsers. There are free online services that would allow you to test your site’s compatibility. Remember that if a user can’t get your site to display properly on their device, they will probably do what comes naturally: hit the back button and go somewhere else, which will potentially result in lost sales and revenue for your business.

A second thing would be to understand exactly what mobile platforms are principally used by your users and what these mobile users do on your website. By taking a look at server logs and statistics, you are able to see how many of your visitors come to your website by using a device other than a PC. You can also see which sections of your site they visit the most and what they do on it. Do they mainly browse for information, or are they looking to buy something that you offer? Remember that trends in mobile platforms may change and new types of devices can appear in the future, so it is best if your site is easily compatible with all mobile browsers and not just aimed at a specific one, unless your main niche is specifically aimed at users of a certain platform (i.e. selling accessories and providing information on Android based mobile phones).

There are a few other ways that you can take full advantage of your traffic which comes from mobile devices and to profit from it. We will take a look at some of the ideas you can implement on your site tomorrow.

New Report Provides Information on Market Share in Search Industry

New Report Provides Information on Market Share in Search Industry

Now that the American economy has improved in the past few months, businesses are again increasing the amount of money that they spend on advertising. The trend that has been observed for the past few years is that businesses are now dedicating an increasing portion of their total advertising budget on internet marketing.

The reasons cited for an increased use of online marketing by businesses, both large and small is that advertising can be specifically targeted to the right demographic, meaning people who are more likely to be interested in what a company has to offer them. There is also the fact that return on investment can be measured in a more direct way. A company can make an advertising budget, then calculate how many sales have been generated as a direct result of its online advertising.

A recent report released by Five Star Equities also shows some information on market share in the online search industry. While the report is mainly aimed at investors who want to buy stocks, it can also be quite interesting for anyone that has an interest in online marketing.

According to the data collected, Google is, unsurprisingly, the leader in North America, having a 66.4 percent share of the market. The only place where Google arrives second is in China, where Chinese search giant Baidu has a share of 61 percent of the market and Google comes in second at 34 percent.

For North America, Google is followed by Microsoft at 15.3 percent and Yahoo at 13.7 percent. AOL currently as a very low market share at 1.5 percent. However, there is some data that suggests that AOL’s popularity may soon be on the increase. Sites which provide search services today actually need to provide more than just websites as search results. They allow users to search for images, videos, news, etc. All of the major search engine providers, Google, Microsoft (with Bing) and Yahoo provide additional services that aren’t simply a search engine. Google has a portfolio of services such as YouTube, Gmail, etc. Yahoo and Microsoft also have similar diversified services too.

In a bid to become more competitive in the online video world, AOL has recently launched a service called AOL On, which offers 14 premium video channels based on different topics and can now reach a larger audience of 57 million consumers in the United States. The video content provided by AOL can be used on different types of internet enabled devices, such as the “traditional” PC, tablets, mobile phones as well as web enabled TV devices.

However, this service is not unique in the online world. Google and Microsoft have also shown that they have an interest with online video and internet enabled TV services. How things will work out for AOL with their new product is yet to be determined for the future, so anyone interested in it can keep an eye out for online marketing news.

A Successful Business Product

A Successful Business Product

In order to make money online with a product it has to be successful. To make a successful product you must consider products that will attract the most attention, products you are extremely knowledgeable in, and can enjoy creating.

Attracting Attention
Do some online research and you can easily find products that are sought after in today’s market. If you are looking to create a product for use on a social media site, it would only be fitting that you focus on the more popular sites for social networking, like Facebook and Twitter. If you were to focus on a media site like MySpace, it is a less popular subject today than it once was, therefore it will not make as much profit as possible.

Knowledgeable
Products you market online should be related to a niche that you are familiar and knowledgeable in. Your consumers want to know that you are an expert in the particular topic you speak about. In order to ensure your consumers a product they would want to pay for you need to deliver information that is not easily accessible in other places. If a consumer finds value in your product you are more likely to receive recommendations and repeat business.

Creativity
Use your creativity to market your product and share information in ways that other sources do not. Since you will be dedicating a lot of time and attention to your product you need to make sure it is something you enjoy doing. The more you can enjoy creating one product the more information you deliver to your consumer, who can easily tell if you are passionate about your particular topic of choice.

Consider these three things before you develop any product to market online, especially if you are looking to generate money from your product!
