Tips On Improving Your Site’s Content For SEO

When talking about SEO, we often here the words: content is king. This leaves many webmasters thinking about how they can improve the quality of the content that they have on their site so they can rank better in search results. Now that Google has released several updates which reward sites that have good content and penalize the bad ones, this has become even more important for webmasters. Here are some easy tips that will help you improve the content of your site, giving your visitors a better and more rewarding user experience, plus helping you rank better for your chosen keywords. Remember that while on page factors aren’t the only thing that will determine just how well a website will rank, they still remain an important piece of the puzzle. With the recent search engine updates focusing on quality, they are something that you simply cannot afford to ignore if you want your online business to succeed.

Adhere to SEO Writing Best Practices

There are dozens of guides and articles which explain what SEO writing is and give detailed explanations on some of the good practices that webmasters can adopt. In summary, this would mean using your keyword within the title of your pages or posts when possible. Use your keyword near the beginning, in the headings and in the end of your page. Your keyword should also be included a few times in the body of the article as well. But one important thing here is that you shouldn’t over do it. Keyword stuffing is one of the fastest ways to get a site penalized right now. If you feel that you’re repeating a certain word or phrase all too often, then this would be a good time to look up some related keywords that you can use instead, to keep your site from being penalized. Not all keyword stuffing is intentional, so this is why you need to pay attention to it when you create content for your site.

Make Your Site Easy to Navigate

A well organized website will make your users much happier. It will make search engines happier as well. For this reason, you should organize the posts on your website in different categories. That way, users can more easily navigate within your site to find some of your other posts. If you’re referencing something that is being discussed in greater detail in another area of your site, linking to it internally is also a good idea. With recent updates, search engines have gotten a lot better at determining which website would provide the user with a good browsing experience and which one would simply be a mess filled with broken links and pages that are difficult to find.

There are plenty of other things that you can do to improve your site’s content when it comes to SEO writing. Tomorrow we will discuss some more tactics that you can adopt. These are all things designed to give your site a boost in search engine rankings and above all, keep it from being pushed down.

How the Google Penguin Update Can Affect Your SEO

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

How the Google Penguin Update Can Affect Your SEO

The Google Penguin update, if you haven’t heard of it, has been released 3 months ago. The main purpose behind the update doesn’t really deviate that much from the goals that previous Google updates had: to reward websites which have good content and provide an overall good experience for their users, while penalizing sites which rely on black hat tactics such as link spamming or keyword stuffing.

When you talk about SEO, then the keywords will obviously be something very important. Previously, giving a lot of consideration to keyword density, as well as the placement of keywords within a page were seen as very important things for any webmaster or online business owners. But this part of the SEO game has changed a bit, as Google is trying to eliminate the “spammy” site from its rankings. Placing your keywords in the title of your content, as well as close to the beginning, is still a good practice. However, webmasters now need to focus more on diversifying their keywords. This means using related words and phrases when possible, rather than just reusing the same words over and over again. Using related keywords will also make the text flow better and look easier to read to a human, which is something that Google wants.

Of course, it is not only on site factors that have changed since the Penguin updated rolled out in April of 2012. Google is now trying to better determine the overall quality of a website by analyzing the link profile. This simply means how many links a website has, where the links are coming from, how much the links have grown recently and what anchor text is being used on these links. It is believed that the anchor text is going to get a lot more attention with Penguin. This is to deter would be comment and link spammers from posting a site link with the same anchor text hundreds, or thousands of times all over the web with the hopes that this will improve the site’s rankings, as it is getting more backlinks.

Of course, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t work on creating backlinks anymore, but there might be a few changes that you may want to do from now on. The main thing to focus on is diversifying your anchor texts. Don’t simply use one keyword for all of your incoming site links. This is one of the fastest ways that you can get your site penalized under the new update. Rather, try to vary that text as much as you can. If you leave comments on forums or blogs, make sure that your comment is not only relevant to your website, but also to the site where you’re posting it on. Generic comments, such as “nice site” or “I agree” may have worked a few months ago, but Google is increasingly cracking down on them, as they simply pollute the comment sections of many blogs by offering nothing that is of value to the discussion.

Increasing Visitor Engagement For Better SEO

Increasing Visitor Engagement For Better SEO

Yesterday, we’ve seen that SEO is not dead yet and it will remain very much alive for a long time. There are, however, a few changes made by how Google evaluates the quality and relevance of websites when deciding which sites get to rank best for their keywords. One of the things that are the most talked about on SEO blogs (the normal ones, not those who claim SEO is dead and who try to sell you some traffic generation “tool”) is the importance that Google is giving to user engagement with a website.

User engagement is simply a way to say that website visitors are interacting with the website’s content. Sites which allow more opportunities for interaction are not only better seen by Google, but they are also more liked and respected by visitors themselves, thus giving you more opportunities for sales, whether you’re an affiliate or you got your own products that you’re selling.

Here are some tips to create better engagement:

  • Let users review or rate your products

This can mean letting them leave actual comments about a certain product, or simply give ratings, such as a number of stars or a grade from 1 to 10, either for the product in general or for certain attributes unique to the product (quality, price, functionality, etc.) Allowing reviews is a good way to earn trust from your users, as a site that deliberately sells junk or is scamming buyers will not want to let users say what they think publicly as they would get rapidly flooded with complaints and bad comments.

  • Allow commenting on blog posts and articles

Blog / article comments are a way to exchange with your readers. Some of them may simply say that they liked what you wrote, while others may have a question or reaction that you may want to respond to. More participation from your users, and a better chance at a good ranking on Google. Of course, there is the issue of spam or potential trolling/flaming/general idiocy in comments. But a good automatic spam detection tool and checking the responses each day to remove anything that is not a productive comment can go a long way. After all, unless you manage a huge site with tens of thousands of daily visitors, you are unlikely to get more than a dozen or so user comments a day, which makes it easy to keep tabs on things.

  • Include social networking features

Social networking buttons, for the major social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Google +, etc. is now becoming a must. Yes, don’t forget Google +. While there is still some debate going on about whether creating a Google + account will truly bring noticeable changes as far as SEO is concerned, general consensus is that it helps slightly and in any case will not hurt you. So include sharing buttons on your content pages, as well as general buttons that lead to your business social media profiles, allowing your visitors to subscribe to your updates through their chosen social network.

There are a few other ways to increase engagement which we will see tomorrow.

More About the Google Panda Update

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

More About the Google Panda Update

Ever since the Google Panda Update has been launched, there has been a lot of talk about it in the online marketing world. However, many people still don’t understand what exactly the update is all about and how it can affect a website. Here is some more information about it and ways to avoid problems associated with this update from Google.

The most important things to understand is what Panda actually is. Essentially, it is a filter that weeds out content that doesn’t have enough substance. The filter is ran on a periodic basis. Every time that it is, all the content indexed by Google goes through the filter again. Therefore, any content that has been caught up in the filter the first time can go through if it has been improved enough. If it’s still poor, then it will remain there and suffer a penalty in the rankings.

Some have argued that Panda is a completely new way that Google uses to rank web pages. This actually isn’t true. There are more than 200 different factors that Google uses to rank pages in search engine results. The Panda update is just one of them.

The main purpose of the Panda update when it was released in February 2011 was to deal with “content farms”. These are websites that have been responsible for “polluting” search results by returning web pages that had little relevance to the keywords that were being searched for by the user. A content farm is a website that usually employs several writers (can sometimes range in the thousands), which create content such as articles, reports, blog posts, etc. that are targeted towards some popular keywords being searched. These sites profit from the traffic that they receive when users click on the ads that they publish, which are usually for products that are loosely related to what the content on the page talks about. The quality of the information on a content farm can vary. Some sites have nearly professional quality content, while on others it simply reads like a bunch of gibberish written by someone who hasn’t even mastered basic English.

Since then, several updates to Panda have been released, by the main purpose is still the same: keeping low quality content from ranking well in search results. Websites that were penalized because of the update have a chance to change things. To get rid of the penalty, all a webmaster needs to do is to remove the content that is of poor quality, or replace it with something that is well written and relevant to the keywords that are targeted on the site.

The basic principles of search engine optimization still apply. Websites that provide their users with high quality content and that target keywords which are closely related to what they have on their site should not experience too many issues with this, or any of the future updates done by Google to the way they rank search results.

Improving the Performance of Your Online Advertising

Improving the Performance of Your Online Advertising

Previously, we’ve seen how important it is to keep track of how your online ads are doing and what you can do to make this happen. But if you notice that you’re not really getting the results that you were hoping for from your online marketing efforts, then there are a few things that you can do to try and solve the problem. Here are some areas that you can examine more in detail to try to change the way things are going:

Your Ad Copy

Having a good ad copy is essential to success in the online world. The ad copy is basically the ad itself, which could be a text ad, video ad, or banner. Look at how your ad is made. If it’s a text ad, like in a classified ads site, is it well written, without 10 spelling mistakes per sentence and gives people an accurate representation of your business (products, prices, etc). Does it have a call to action? For a banner ad, is it visually appealing? Does it at least give some information about what you’re promoting? Having a good ad copy can make a big difference.

Keywords/Demographics/Other Parameters

These would be factors that are specific to each type of online advertising method you use. For example, if you use PPC ads on search engines, you will need to target the right keywords. If you use media buying, you can select demographics so that your ad will be displayed on websites that are more likely to be frequented by the section of the population which are your target market. You can also select your ad to be displayed on specific sites, etc. Don’t forget geo targeting. If you have a local business, showing your ads world wide is simply a waste of money. Get familiar with the advertising method that you’re using and tweak some of the parameters as necessary.

Marketing Channel or Specific Site/Service

Not every single advertising channel will be appropriate for every business. Also, certain specific sites or services could yield better results for some users. For example, a company may not get much luck getting good customers on the classified ad site Craigslist, but could get much more quality visitors and customers from Backpage, etc. Don’t hesitate to drop a certain service or advertising channel from your portfolio completely, especially if after making many changes, plus putting in time and money you aren’t able to make anything work well for you. There will always be other options available to you.

Obviously, these are just some general tips on what you can change to get some improvement. There are plenty of free resources available online such as e books and forum posts which deal with the specifics of certain advertising channels, or give advice on how to promote a specific kind of business online. By reading these materials, you will get a better look at some additional things that you can do to improve the way your online ads are now doing.

SEO Considerations for Blogs: Content and On Page Elements

SEO Considerations for Blogs: Content and On Page Elements

Many of us would wish that blogs which are filled with original and well written content would simply rank well on search engines, just like a business that provides high quality products and services to their customers would wish that their website would rank well on Google just because of that. But unfortunately, in the real world this is not how SEO works.

Before you begin thinking about SEO, you should know that your primary focus as a blogger is to deliver the content that your audience will love. It’s possible to incorporate SEO elements into good quality articles on your blog and even to make a few easy changes to existing ones. However, don’t simply write with SEO in mind. You may achieve good page rankings, but if your visitors don’t find the content to be any use to them they simply won’t want to return anymore.

For on page factors, the majority of your on page work will revolve around using the right keywords in the right place. The first thing you need to do is your keyword research. Think of the keywords that your readers will be using if they’re going to be searching for information that you cover in one of your blog articles. Make a list of these words and use keyword research tools to find alternatives as well.

One thing that can help with keyword research is to analyze the competition. If there are other pages out there which have information that is similar to what you’re offering, you need to see what keywords will find it. What keywords are your competitors currently targeting and how well do they rank for these keywords?

Once you have your list of keywords, you will want to figure out how to integrate this in your pages. A lot of people here make a mistake and believe that simply cramming as many keywords as possible in their blog posts will make their posts rise through search engine rankings like they were under some kind of magician’s spell. While this might have worked 10 years ago, keyword stuffing will not help you anymore today. Furthermore, it will also cause problems for the content of your blog. This is because blog articles which have keywords that were forced in will be hard to read and may actually cause you to be penalized by search engines.

Include your main keywords in the first and last sentences of your blog post and use them when appropriate in the main body. Also, use the keywords as much as possible in the title, the heading tags, in the permanent link of the blog post, in internal links to other related articles, as well as in alt tags.

There are also a few other things that will help you with your SEO efforts and can propel your blog through the search engine rankings. Tomorrow we will go through the importance of having a proper external and internal linking strategy.

Advertising and Traffic Generation Methods for Info Products

Advertising and Traffic Generation Methods for Info Products

In order for you to sell your product online you will need one main thing: traffic. Not just any kind of traffic, but targeted traffic coming from visitors that actually have an interest in your product. Selling a downloadable information product online is similar to selling any other kind of product from a website, but there are a few tips that are unique to this type of merchandise. Here are some ways that you can use to get your website up and running with visitors.

  • Search Engine Optimization

SEO is often overlooked by many creators of digital products, but if done right it can be a good long term traffic solution. It all depends on what you’re up against. When doing SEO, you must first analyze the amount of competition that you have for your desired keywords. Look at the number of sites that are ranked for your main keywords and look at which sites are near the top of search results.

Start developing an SEO strategy including both on page and off page factors. One of the key elements of SEO, which is link building, actually fits in well with other traffic generation methods, as you will not only get backlinks, but also potential visitors from people who click links to your product that are found on other websites. You must remember that good SEO may take some time, especially if you’re in a niche that is quite competitive, so it may not be the best for instant traffic. But for long term traffic, it’s still the best.

  • Article Marketing

Article marketing is a simple and quite effective way of marketing an info product. In fact, it’s one of the simplest and most popular forms of online advertising when it comes to selling digital goods. It consists of writing articles that are related to your niche and address some of the questions and issues that potential buyers of your product may have, without giving them too much information. You then include a link to your product at the bottom of your article inviting the reader to get more answers from your product. Articles can be posted on various article directories, such as Ezine Articles. There are also services which allow your articles to be syndicated for free to blogs that are looking for content.

One of the main advantages of article marketing is that it’s free. You only need to spend some time to write the articles and publish them to the relevant places. However, this can also sometimes get tedious, as you will need to write several unique articles a day and post them to directories before you start seeing any traffic and results. Of course, it’s also possible to outsource some or all of the article creation to a freelancer who can do the writing and posting of the articles for you. However, doing so will require some investment on your part.

There are a few other traffic generation techniques that you can use to get visitors to your product which we will take a look at tomorrow.

Attracting Quality Traffic To Your Blog

Attracting Quality Traffic To Your Blog

Now that you have your blog set up, as well as ideas on how you can get content to it, it’s time to think about how you will be getting some visitors to it. There are some ways to optimize your blog in order to receive the maximum amount of traffic, without spending money on advertising. Some of these ways are actually quite simple and can be implemented on a regular basis. Here is how you can get some high quality readers to your blog and keep them coming back:

  • Research Your Keywords

This applies to both your blog post categories, as well as the posts that you will be making. Research the keywords that you would expect readers to search for on search engines like Bing and Google. Do a comparison of the different keywords, such as their search volume and competition level. Select the right keywords to describe your categories. For your posts, include the keywords in a natural way. This is very important, as to ensure that your posts stay legible and not simply stuffed with keywords, you will need to include them in a fully natural way.

  • Include Sharing and Bookmarking Options

Integrate the “big three” social media buttons, such as Google+, Twitter and Facebook with your blog, by having like buttons for your blog itself as well as for individual posts. If there are other social networks that are popular among your readers, include their buttons as well. You should also put in social bookmarking links, such as Digg, Stumbleupon and Delicious, which will further allow your visitors to remember your blog as well as share it with others. An RSS feed would also be a good way to keep your readers loyal by letting them know when new content has been posted to your blog.

  • Submit Your Blog to RSS and Blog Directories

There are plenty of free blog directories that you can submit your blog to. Take advantage of them. Even if they may not bring you too much exposure in the beginning, a few visitors a day could rapidly turn into hundreds of visitors if your content is engaging enough for these visitors to share your content with others online.

  • Distribute a Press Release Regarding Your Blog

When you’re just starting out and have started adding some content to your new blog, distributing a press release about your blog could be a good way to get some attention. Press releases are often held in high regard by the “News” section of search engines, especially Google. You can find plenty of free information online on how to write an effective press release, what information to include in it, as well as where to distribute it so that you will get maximum exposure for your blog. This is one of the best ways to get some attention going to your new blog and can very well get you your first loyal readers if they like the topic of your blog and its content.

Tips for Promoting Your Blog: Part 1

Tips for Promoting Your Blog: Part 1

Now that you’ve created your blog and added some useful and informative content to it that is sure to keep your visitors interested in it, you may still have one issue: how to get more visitors to see your blog. We all know that in the online world, quality traffic to any website equals more money for the webmaster. But unless you send your blog to one friend and it suddenly goes viral (which can happen, though is very rare), you will need to take some action yourself in order to promote your blog to your targeted audience. This isn’t complicated and it simply requires that you follow a few tried and tested internet marketing tips. Here are some of them:

Establish Good SEO Practices

If you have a blog, then you’re already at a slight advantage over other sites, since search engines such as Google tend to love blogs. But you would still need to take some actions to give your blog “better SEO”. The first thing would be to think about the inclusion of targeted keywords in your blog posts. Optimize your posts for your targeted keywords by maintaining a density of around 1% to 2%. Try not to over do it, as it would look like you’re just keyword stuffing. Also, don’t force keywords in phrases where they would make no sense. Search engine algorithms have been updated recently to detect such things and you will end up being penalized for having nonsensical phrases in your posts that are obviously designed to boost your rankings rather than give your readers some useful content. There are a few plugins that will help you analyze the SEO qualities of your blog posts, for example SEO Pressor for WordPress. Use them to your advantage.

Link to it From Your Main Site

If you already have some steady traffic flowing to your main website, then including a link to your blog can be a logical thing to do. If you’ve just launched your blog, then including a mid size square button on your site or making an announcement on it can build some interest in your blog rather quickly and bring your some much needed traffic to it. After all, if your site visitors don’t know that your blog exists, they won’t visit it and will just stay on your website.

Announce it in your Email Campaigns or Link to it in your Email Signature

If your blog is new, having an entry about it in one of your email messages that you send to your mailing list is recommended. You already know the importance of linking to your main website in your messages by including a link to it in your signature at the bottom of the email. You can do the same thing with your blog in your subsequent communications to your customers. Of course, if you’ve made a new and interesting blog post, you can also make this the topic of one of your email newsletters. Rather than copying your blog post in your message, link to the relevant post on your blog.

Building Your Blog for Online Marketing

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Building Your Blog for Online Marketing

You’ve probably heard about how effective it can be to build a blog to help you with your online marketing efforts. It is true that if you have a website, adding a blog can be very useful, as it will deliver interesting content that will be both useful for your readers and also will be well loved by search engines like Google. This will help you rank higher for your targeted keywords and ultimately lead to more money for you in the end. Building a blog is straightforward enough, but there are some things you would need to be aware of first. You will see some of the things you can do to make your blog a more effective tool.

Choosing a Good Blog Hosting Provider

If you already have a website, then your web host will probably allow you to add another website either on its own domain, or as part of a subdomain of your existing one. If you don’t then you should sign up for a basic shared hosting account to begin. Avoid using the free services like Blogger, as they’re not really a good choice if you want to make money from your blog. A paid hosting account gives you more flexibility and reliability over the content of your blog.

Figure out How You Will Make Your Blog Profitable

If you already have a website where you’re selling your own products, one of the ways to make your blog some money for you would be to link to the relevant pages of your main website from articles posted within your blog.

But there are also other ways that you can monetize a blog even if you’re not selling anything directly online. For example, you can include affiliate links to products that you provide information on in your blog, or that are related to its content. So if your blog deals with mobile phones, you can include mobile related affiliate offers on your blog. It is also possible to add some pay per click ads from a service such as Adwords or Bidvertiser, where you will get paid for every click that someone makes on one of the ads served on your blog.

Decide What Kind of Content You Will Have On Your Blog

Of course, you need to decide on a niche for your blog. But also, you will need to determine what you will be talking about more specifically in that niche on your blog. Your blog could, for example deal with new happenings in your niche/industry. Or you could provide product reviews of products that you sell on your own site or are an affiliate of. And then there is the possibility of putting up informational and educational content that’s related to your main niche. Of course, you can also combine all of these possibilities in your blog, but it is a good idea to know what kind of posts you will be making once the blog is up.

Your SEO Goals Should Be Realistic

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Your SEO Goals Should Be Realistic

When it comes to SEO, there are plenty of misconceptions, especially among new webmasters and those who have just started out in online business. Some people seem to believe that just by doing the most basic SEO work or by hiring some SEO “expert” for $5 at Digital Point, they would be able to propel their site to 1st place on Google within a few days. For anyone that thinks that way, well sorry but this is just not how SEO works.

If you want to improve your websites ranking on the search engines, then your goals will need to be realistic. One of the ways of doing so would be to take a look at the websites that are already ranked for the keywords that you are targeting. Do a keyword analysis of your site to see which keywords you would be better off targeting. In many cases, you will be able to find some long tail keywords that are more specific to your offerings and that have less competition. If you do business at a local level, then targeting some local keywords can also be very helpful. Once again, the reason behind this is that the competition for local keywords is a lot lower than for the more general ones, thus it would be much easier for you to rank for them.

One thing that you will need to understand about SEO is that it is more of a long term process, rather than an instant solution to get traffic to your website right away. If you have just created your website, then it can take several weeks or even months before you are able to get any decent amount of traffic from natural search engine results in certain high competition, popular niches.

For this reason, you need to consider using some other advertising methods in the meantime to bring some traffic to your website. Pay per click search advertising obviously comes to mind here. Many would say that it brings you the same results than SEO, but is able to do so a lot faster. The major drawback, however is that you will need to spend some money on it, sometimes considerable amounts if the keywords that you are targeting are quite competitive and thus very valuable.

If you truly want your website to bring you the money that you want, then you would need to understand that online advertising is a very diverse environment, where you have dozens of different ways to generate traffic to your website besides using SEO. Using media buying, article marketing, social media marketing or video marketing are all things that you can do alongside SEO to make your site more popular. Remember what the main focus behind creating a website is: to make money for you. By employing the proper strategies to get the visitors that you need, you will be able to improve your ROI by getting more visitors and turning these website visitors into profitable clients for your business.

Keeping Your Website Visitors Loyal

Keeping Your Website Visitors Loyal

Some websites are more designed for visitors to only visit the site once to make a purchase. After that, there is really no more reasons for the user to visit the site again. This is usually the case when it comes to eBook sales pages or landing pages for CPA offers. However, there are many other types of websites where you would want the user to come back often. This includes e-commerce sites, as well as many other sites that do not directly sell anything, but are there to provide content to the user, such as informational blogs or “arcade” type sites that provide flash games. Usually the webmaster profits from these sites by including CPA advertising banners or pay per click ads on their site. Now one question that webmasters often ask is: how do I make my visitors come back? There are a few ways you can accomplish this. Here are some of the most important ones:

  • First, provide useful content

Obviously, for a user to come back later, they must have enjoyed the site and found it interesting. So your first responsibility would be to give your audience something that they are interested in, something that they would want to look at. Also, make sure that the content that you put on your site is of high quality. So if you have an informational blog on a certain topic, make sure that the posts would actually make someone learn something, are well written and well presented. Nobody wants to read a blog that is filled with poor grammar, contains tons of information that is just copied from other places on the internet and stuffed with keywords.

  • Update your content regularly

Having a site that looks “dead” will not do much to bring back visitors. If a visitor sees that the last update that you have made to your site was several months ago, they will not be too inclined to come back, thinking that the website has been abandoned and will not be updated. As such, it is very important that you add fresh and new content to your website on a regular basis. If you have an e-commerce site, feature some different products on your home page every once in a while. Or better yet, offer some special promotions on some merchandise and advertise this on the main page of your site. Put in some news about upcoming products or promotions. If the user knows that you will be adding new things to your website in the future, they will be more likely to book mark the site and will come back later on to check out the new things that you have added.

These are all basic things that you can do to increase visitor loyalty. Tomorrow we will explore some additional items that you can add to your site to increase repeat visits and potentially make more profit from your website’s returning visitors.

Attracting Local Visitors To Your Website: More SEO Tips

Yesterday, we saw that there are certain ways that a local business can employ to attract local traffic that will be useful to them. One of these ways is by doing SEO on your site. Now SEO may seem like it is something complicated, but in reality it is not. There are some very simple things that you can do to make your website look more attractive to search engines and thus rise through the rankings faster than you would have ever thought possible. Also, if you need to do some SEO on your site and don’t want to do all of the work yourself, then there are service providers which can do some of the SEO work for you cheaply.

When we talk about SEO, there are a few things that you need to consider if you want to do proper SEO for your small business website. There are two categories of factors which will affect your position in search engines. One is on site factors and the other one is off site factors.

On Site Factors

How your site will do in terms of SEO will depend on how your overall site is designed and the content on it. If you run a local small business, it is better to focus on targeting keywords that have your main product or service name, in addition to the name of the city that you service. That way, you will have less competition that you need to beat to get to the top of search engine results. This is especially true if you are in a relatively small city, then you might only have 2 or 3 competitors. Also, remember to add content to your website regularly. You may want to add a few articles related to your niche that are optimized to your main keyword and the name of your city too.

Off Site Factors

The main off site factor is the amount of backlinks that your site has. Backlinks are the amount of links coming from other websites and that point towards your site. However, quantity is not the main focus here. Quality is more important. The backlinks need to come from reputed sites which have some kind of relation to your niche.

Learning SEO

There are plenty of detailed, yet easy to understand guides on SEO available online. You can find these simply by doing a Google search. Or, you can look through internet marketing forums to find some useful guides, as well as additional advice on SEO techniques that you may want to use.

Outsourcing SEO Work

Doing SEO for your site will involve doing things such as writing articles, building backlinks and submitting your site to business directories. While these could easily be done by yourself, the main drawback is that they take time to do. If you want to outsource these relatively cheaply, then check out some internet marketing forums, as these have a section where people can buy and sell various kinds of services. You can also look at a site such as Fiverr, where you can outsource many tasks for just $5 each.

Attracting Local Visitors To Your Website: Do Your SEO First

One of the main attractions of advertising your business in the online world is that you are able to reach people all over the world. Anyone, from anywhere can visit your website and do business with you. However, for certain small businesses, this is not what they need, especially if they only do business in a certain local area. Therefore, for them, receiving visitors from all over the country and all over the world will be quite useless and will simply result in wasted time and wasted bandwidth on their website.

Think of it this way. If you run a local landscaping business, you don’t need people from the other end of the country seeing your website. It will be as useless to them as it is to you. The visitor will simply see that you don’t serve their area and then leave your site. For them, seeing your website would have simply been nothing more than a waste of time. But how do you target visitors that are only from the area that you do business in? There are many ways in which this can be accomplished. We will take a look at some of the techniques that you can use to make this happen.

Proper Local SEO

Sure, there are many different ways to get people to see your website. With dozens of different advertising options, many business owners don’t focus much on SEO, considering it too complicated to perform on their own and too costly to outsource to a professional firm. As you will see, both of these assertions are not necessarily true. In any case, even if you don’t expect search engine traffic to be your main source of clicks, doing some SEO work on your site is recommended, even if it is just the most basic type.

Basic SEO is not complicated at all for a local business. It simply consists of targeting the right keywords in the proper way. Therefore, you should optimize your content towards keywords that are more “local” than simply general keywords. So if you run a landscaping business in Boca Raton, Florida, you would optimize your content for keywords such as “Boca Raton landscaping” or “landscaping in Boca Raton”. By doing so, you will only be competing for rankings with local businesses, which is easier than trying to rank for the more general “landscaping”. Furthermore, a person doing a search for (product or service) + city is more likely to be in buying mode and seeking out a place where they can GET the service in your city. Even if they are not ready to make a decision yet and are just comparing prices, they are much more likely to contact YOU if they notice that your business offers the best value. On the other hand, someone searching for “landscaping” could simply be looking for landscaping tips and tricks and not interested in hiring anyone’s services.

But is it really hard to do SEO for local businesses and is it really costly to get help? These are topics that we will discuss in the second part.
