Making Your Business Look Trustworthy Online

When shopping online, one of the things that makes many internet users hesitant at buying from a specific site is their perceived reliability and honesty of the business that they’re dealing with. Sure, you can offer the best quality products and offer your customers with top notch customer service, but you will need to convince them that this is something that you truly offer. There are quite a few methods that you can use to make your site appear more trustworthy in the eyes of online shoppers. It’s nothing too complicated, really. All that you have to do is to include certain elements on your website.

  • The main design

Your site should be neatly designed and load correctly in all browsers without errors. Every element should work, such as the links and graphics. Text on your site should be free of grammatical and spelling errors. It has been demonstrated time and time again, a site that looks “professional” will immediately get more trust from visitors than a website that looks like it was put together in 10 minutes.

  • Contact information

If something goes wrong, buyers will want to have the assurance that they will be able to contact you to resolve the issue. They also want a quick way to get in touch with you should they have questions about your products.

The contact information that you provide will depend on the type of products that you sell and the specific kind of business that you run. If you have a physical location, including your address prominently on your site will help reassure visitors that they’re dealing with a “real” business. But even if you only sell digital products, posting some contact information prominently on your site is still a necessity. Include a phone number and email address if possible. Make sure that the “Support” or “Contact Us” button is well visible on your site.

If visitors need to read through the fine print at the bottom of the page just to see your contact information, this gives the impression that the only purpose of your site is to sell things, but that you don’t really care too much as to what happens after the buyer completes the purchase.

  • Social media buttons

Linking to your company’s social media pages from your website will give the impression that you’re a more established company, rather than a fly by night website. Therefore, you should include some links on your website to your Facebook, Twitter or Google+ pages. Not only will this help with marketing, but it also reassures the visitor that they would have a way to contact you or post comments about a purchase that they’ve made from you.

While these are some of the top elements you can include on your website, they’re not the only ones. Tomorrow, we will take a look at a few other things that you can do which will help instill trust in the people who come across your website.

Content Types that Your Website Really Needs

Content Types that Your Website Really Needs

Would you like to establish your business website as a relevant site, one that has authority in its niche? Then there are a few content types that you should include in different sections of your site. The exact type of content that you add will largely depend on the type of business you’re running and what your goals are. If you run a small shop and are satisfied with the results that a one page website brings you, then of course you can keep on doing that. But if you want to expand and make your business grow, then you would need to get a bit more creative.

We’ll present the content types your site should have, as well as show you why they’re important in today’s online world:

  • Video

Internet users watch billions of videos every single month. Therefore, having video on your website won’t get you the “Wow!” factor that it would 15 years ago. But it will still help make it more complete and useful for your visitors. The videos that you present can be about anything that’s useful to your visitors, such as a presentation of your products, a “walkaround” of your business, a clip of your products being used normally or being subjected to torture tests just to prove how durable they are, etc.

  • Inforgraphics

You’ve probably seen these on a growing number of websites. They’re actually a very rapidly growing form of website content and this trend is expected to continue in the next few months. Read up more on infographics and how they can help you connect to your audience. Even if you’re not a good graphic artist, there are plenty of free tools and programs available out there that will help you create some attractive looking inforgraphics. Of course, you can also outsource the process if you’d like. Inofrgaphics are hot right now and are definitely something that you would want to look into.

  • Industry specific news and unique commentary

Having news items about your industry on your website or corporate blog can definitely be useful, but it you want to keep your readers interested, you need to mind what type of news you post. Don’t simply re-write things that have been posted all over the major industry news sites already.

For example, anyone who hasn’t been stranded in another galaxy for the past few weeks will already have known that the new iPhone 5 is coming out at the end of September, so repeating the launch announcement will not do much good. Instead, you can offer unique insights and commentary on the new product, how it relates to your business, as well as the issues surrounding it. For example, if you sell smartphone cases, you can talk about durability issues in new smartphones as well as some of the reports that the iPhone scratches easily. This will help you encourage site visitors to buy your cases to protect their mobile phone.

Google + Usage Still Growing

Google + Usage Still Growing

When searching for the best ways to advertise online, social media is one of the most popular choices of many marketers today. Google +, the new social networking service launched by Google, has seen some controversy when it first started out, as many believed that it would be a dud, just like some of Google’s other failed products. But it has turned out that the new service by Google may indeed have a chance at really gaining some ground.

Google has recently released new figures about their usage statistics. According to information contained in a news update, Google + now boasts 400 million users who have created an account on the service. However, this doesn’t mean that all of these are users that actively visit the service. There are still many that have just created an account out of curiosity, and maybe uploaded a few photos or linked up with some friends, but who don’t pay too much attention to the service.

The total amount of active users, is actually closer to 100 million. Still not bad for such a recent service and definitely a potential for marketers and small business owners. If we count those that just used the “social layer”, such as clicking on a +1 link on the web, or mobile users who +1 an app that they’ve seen, the number would increase to 150 million.

Another important number is the growth. When statistics were released in July, it was reported than traffic to Google + has grown by more than 65%. Again, this shows that internet users have an interest in Google +.

Marketers and advertisers need to recognize this and consider whether Google + should be part of their overall social networking strategy. The best way to go about things right now is to try using the platform for your business and see what kinds of results you will get. You can compare the performance of using Google + versus some of the other social networks. But as always, you should keep ahead of any new developments and statistics that are released about social networking usage. Because it is those who take advantage of new opportunities quickly that often end up among the winners, as they were the first to see new sources of traffic and exposure for their brand.

So far, usage statistics for Facebook have remained quite stable and there is still clear indication that it is used by a large number of internet users. In fact, as we have seen in a previous post, over 85% of young adults in the United States have a Facebook account and the site also remains popular among the older generation as well.

So far, Google has also made good efforts to keep interest in Google + going, thanks to the redesign of some portions of the user interface, as well as by encouraging webmasters to include +1 buttons on their websites which allows the user to share a site that they’ve seen with their friends.

Who Uses Which Social Networking Site?

Who Uses Which Social Networking Site?

One of the basics of a successful online advertising campaign is that you have to target the right people. Social media sites are rapidly becoming a part of the marketing channels used by both small and large businesses. Many advertisers would like to have a more accurate picture of what people use which social network. A survey recently done by the Pew Research Center has given a bit of insight on this topic, which could help marketers choose which social network they will prioritize in their marketing campaigns:

LinkedIn

The “business” social network, it is reported that 20% of all internet users surveyed use it. The majority of users are college graduates or higher and have a higher than average annual income. In fact, 58% of LinkedIn users report having an annual income of $50 000 per year or higher. With LinkedIn, the higher the annual income of an individual, the most likely they are to have an account on the social network. This isn’t too surprising, as it is a site used by professionals such as lawyers, accountants and business managers.

Pineterest

A relatively new site that is already showing some potential, despite a bit of controversy about them removing affiliate links and replacing them with their own. Usage is more popular among the younger crowd of 18-29 year olds. The majority of Pinterest users have attended some college or are college graduates. One thing that is interesting about Pinterest is that it’s a lot more popular with women than with men. In fact, the study shows that 20% of women who use the internet also visit Pinterest on a regular basis, compared to just 5% of men. This would make it an option worth looking at for marketers who sell products that are mainly targeted at a female audience.

Facebook

The most popular social network to date, which has a variety of internet users on it. 67% of internet users report having a Facebook account. Slightly more popular among women with 70% using it, as opposed to 63% of men.

Another interesting element of Facebook is the age distribution. 83% of internet users between 18 and 29 years of age report having an account on Facebook, 72% of 30-49 year olds to, 56% of 50-64 year olds and 40% of those aged 65 and over have one. Out of all the social networking services, Facebook is the one that is the most popular among the older crowd.

Regarding annual income, the demographic that uses Facebook the most (75%) are those with an annual income between $30 000 and $50 000 per year.

While these figures are interesting for marketers as they give a bit of insight on who uses each social network, they are obviously not the only thing that marketers should look at when they plan an advertising campaign. In order to be successful, marketers need to design their ads well, plus run some tests to see which ad copies are able to generate the most responses from users.

Social Media Site Satisfaction: How Facebook Did

Social Media Site Satisfaction: How Facebook Did

The American Customer Satisfaction Index has recently been released for social networking sites. The goal of this index is to measure just how individual consumers are satisfied with many different social networking websites. Facebook got 61% as a score, which is far below all other social networks. Many could obviously wonder as to why that is and whether consumers are now getting ready to ditch Facebook in favor of better performing services like Google +. The reality is that it’s not too likely to happen. Consumers are still using Facebook and there is no sign of any massive exodus yet, mainly because there is no competition that is strong enough to pose a big challenge to Facebook yet. This is sort of like with the Microsoft Windows operating system. The vast majority of PC users have it installed and use it as their main OS. Sure, there are thousands of complaints about Windows and most users would find at least a few negative points to say about the OS. But due to the fact that there are very few other alternatives, people just stick to Windows even if it’s not fully up to their satisfaction.

Why did Facebook score so low, however? Here are some of the main reasons:

  • Privacy issues. Privacy is obviously very important for internet users, especially now that many security risks have been made public in the mainstream media. Anything from scams, identity theft, harassment and unwanted information gathering about users has been talked about. When Facebook users were asked about how they felt that Facebook’s commitment to privacy was, about half would give it a poor grade.
  • Problems with Facebook ads. Many users were not too happy about Facebook ads. Some stated that seeing advertising negatively affected their user experience and interfered with them browsing the site. Some have found the ads to be just too intrusive and would rather see fewer or no ads at all when they browse many sections of the site. Others have said that the ads they see are poorly targeted or irrelevant to their needs, for example ads for car repair shops shown to people who don’t own a car. While Facebook has made some progress in increasing relevancy, the whole issue hasn’t been solved yet.
  • Changes to the profile layout. Some have enjoyed the change to the Facebook timeline and have adapted well to it. But many others have already gotten used to the old profile style and have criticized the timeline greatly. These users would often say that they felt like Facebook has forced its users to adopt the timeline even if they don’t like it and they feel like the change is simply too radical. In general, these users believe that Facebook frequently changes the way their site works, without first consulting with the users to see if they would approve of the changes before they are actually imposed on them.

Taking Full Advantage of Mobile Traffic

Taking Full Advantage of Mobile Traffic

It is a fact that the devices that we use to access the internet have changed. Of course, the regular PC, desktop or laptop, is still the main way for the world’s internet users to get online. But the PC is rapidly losing “market share” to mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets. Now that the Microsoft Surface is making big news and that there is speculation that Apple is going to unveil yet another version of its iPad as an “iPad Mini” with similar features but a smaller form factor, many online marketers are starting to pay attention to the fact that not all their traffic will be coming from PC users. In fact, an ever growing number of website visits are made from other devices, most notably smart phones, followed by tablets. And it’s not just site visits that are made. Visitors are also profitable for site owners because they make purchases. Signing up for services, buying digital goods and even purchasing physical merchandise just like they would on a PC.

One question that comes to mind is what online entrepreneurs should do about it to take better advantage of this new trend and to be among the first to profit from it. There are a few easy tips which a webmaster or online marketer can follow:

The most important thing is ensuring that the websites you own either have a mobile version, or at least are compatible with the common mobile browsers. There are free online services that would allow you to test your site’s compatibility. Remember that if a user can’t get your site to display properly on their device, they will probably do what comes naturally: hit the back button and go somewhere else, which will potentially result in lost sales and revenue for your business.

A second thing would be to understand exactly what mobile platforms are principally used by your users and what these mobile users do on your website. By taking a look at server logs and statistics, you are able to see how many of your visitors come to your website by using a device other than a PC. You can also see which sections of your site they visit the most and what they do on it. Do they mainly browse for information, or are they looking to buy something that you offer? Remember that trends in mobile platforms may change and new types of devices can appear in the future, so it is best if your site is easily compatible with all mobile browsers and not just aimed at a specific one, unless your main niche is specifically aimed at users of a certain platform (i.e. selling accessories and providing information on Android based mobile phones).

There are a few other ways that you can take full advantage of your traffic which comes from mobile devices and to profit from it. We will take a look at some of the ideas you can implement on your site tomorrow.

Google Shutting Down Some of Its Products

Google Shutting Down Some of Its Products

Google, while famous for being the most popular and widely used search engine in the world, has plenty of other products that are used by millions of internet users around the world. Think of its other services such as Adwords, Gmail and of course the video sharing site YouTube that they own. But Google also has a few dozen smaller services that don’t enjoy such widespread popularity. And as of late, the company has been restructuring some of its offering and shutting down some of them, which have either outlived their usefulness, or simply don’t have enough users to make keeping them active worth while for the company.

One service that Google is planning to get rid of is iGoogle, a custom home page service where people could decide which information gets displayed when they open their browser. There is some speculation that the shutdown is simply due to the fact that the service dates from another era, where “portal” websites were all the rage and people liked to get news, email, weather, etc. all on one page as soon as they opened their browser. Remember that unlike most other search engines at the time, the main Google home page was very simple and not cluttered with different categories and elements like on Yahoo. Google will be getting rid of iGoogle on November 1st 2013, so the remaining users who find the service useful can continue to enjoy it until then.

Another Google service that will be axed is Google Video. It’s a simple video sharing service that has largely been replaced by YouTube when Google bought the. Many are surprised that Google hasn’t gotten rid of Google Video sooner, given the fact that new content uploads stopped being accepted back in 2009. If you still have some videos there, you should consider moving them to YouTube or another video sharing service soon, as it will be gone on August 20th 2012.

There are many Google products and services which have been discontinued in the past couple of months. Some examples include: Google Desktop, Google Pack, Google Gears, Patent Search and Google Friend Connect.

The good news for the users is that in many cases, the functionality provided by services that have been closed down or that will be soon have been integrated in another Google product. If not, chances are that there is another online service that can provide you with the same or similar features.

There is some speculation about why Google is launching and then shutting down so many products. Some comments from users say that the company is too busy trying to dominate every corner of the internet and have a service that can do everything imaginable. But even with all the investments made in research and development of new online products, there are those that simply don’t catch on, become obsolete or aren’t able to compete well with already established websites if the Google product doesn’t offer anything substantially better for its users.

Is Microsoft’s Social Network Going to Work?

Is Microsoft’s Social Network Going to Work?

As we all know, social networking is rapidly gaining in importance in the online world. A large amount of internet users regularly visit websites such as Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Google +, etc. While social networking sites have flourished and have helped the companies that run them make tremedous profits, one big player in the online world seemed to be left behind: Microsoft. Sure, they have some social features in Windows Live. Plus they have the SkyDrive service, which makes it easier for users to share files and data through a cloud storage environment. Then, there was the launch of social features on the Bing search engine. But one thing that Microsoft lacked was a social platform similar to Google + or Facebook.

But this may change in the future. On May 20th, Microsoft has announced that they are experimenting with a new social networking service called Socl. Now the main question remains: is this new service going to experience any success, or will it be relegated to the status of “failed product”? For now, it is yet too early to tell. The service was launched by Microsoft Research on an experimental basis.

Even with that, there have been a few reports of users who have tried Socl. The results so far have been a bit disappointing. On the home page, Socl says that users will have the ability to share what they search for, take part in a “video party” and “discover new interests”.

Sharing your search doesn’t seem like anything spectacular and that feature has already been integrated with Bing, which kind of makes it redundant. As for video parties, this is a feature that for now, doesn’t seem to have much interest among social media users. Even with Google +, few users find this feature too attractive. And those who do usually stay on dedicated web cam sites that have a complete platform built around this, like Stickam.

Lastly, if users want to discover new interests, the network will need to have enough content on it to let them do this. But if there are few active users, there is also little chance that someone will discover anything new and interesting by using Microsoft’s Socl service.

As far as functionality is concerned, things aren’t going too great. Reviewers who have tried the site found that the signup process was clumsy and they had to try again several times just to get to the next page. Certain elements of the service, like sharing links, also seemed to be needlessly complicated and needed a few tries before getting things working the way they should. As it’s just an experiment, we can of course say that Microsoft will improve the service and make it work better.

However, for now there doesn’t seem to be too much interest in this Microsoft product. In fact, if you weren’t following online marketing or IT news, you probably wouldn’t have even known that it existed. You can, of course, sign up to see what it’s all about, but for now, it looks like the service is far from being anything that great.

Start Using SEO Now to Profit in The Future

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an important part of marketing which allows for greater exposure to your website(s) through the continued use of techniques which propagate positive influence. This influence will affect both internet users browsing websites as well as the Search Engines which serve up these websites. The way that this influence occurs is fairly simple to understand, although how it works exactly is not entirely known due to the constant changes being made to the Search Engine algorithms. Profiteers will wish to make the most amount of money in the least amount of time with these methods, but the best option is to build up earnings slowly and gradually for consistent results.

Simple Tricks to Taking Advantage of SEO:

SEO Software – SEO Software is available in many fashions and makes it simple to automate the process of Search Engine optimization. These options will usually guarantee a top ten ranking for keywords that are searched with little competition. Although you may not rank for the top keywords, you will rank for alternatives.

Blogging - Blogging helps to build a knowledge base for customers and interested parties to learn more. Not only does this help the image of the website, but it provides several opportunities to link back to the original website which is being promoted which in turn affects the ranking positively on the Search Engines. The fresh content from blogs also helps your site stay relevant in the search engines – and it also increases your chance on getting more links back to your website. A great tool is Ping-O-Matic for this, which basically “pings” (or notifies) all of the major search engines and blog engines when you make a new post. All you have to do is go to their website and input your details once (then save your information via a bookmark) then every time you visit that bookmark it will ping all of the major search engines to notify them of your changes you have made.

Using SEO Services – Many content providers and services will be able to make the process less time consuming for the original website owner/manager. The content provided will be made by real people and this is what makes it more visually appealing to the target audience. This method helps to connect emotionally to future consumers of your products to increase sales and improve profit margins.

Over time, using these techniques will help you increase your PageRank, increase the number of backlinks, and ultimately the number of sales or visitors you get to your website.
