Is Your Facebook Page Not Giving You the Results You Wanted?

One question that some business owners ask is: why aren’t people actually participating on my Facebook fan page? The question isn’t one that’s easy to answer, as there could be a myriad of reasons as to why this is happening to you. Facebook is of course, the biggest social networking site around, with nearly a billion active users. So we all know how important it is for a business to set up their presence on the network. If you read any online marketing material that deals with social media, you will see the message: get on Facebook and promote your business. So you go out, create a page, then maybe add some content on a semi-regular basis. But it’s still not working out for you. The content is there, you may get some fans, but the “connection” with them isn’t happening as you may had planned before.

What you need to do is to actually motivate your fans, so that they will like your posts, comment on them, share their own ideas and also share the stuff that you’ve posted with other on their own profiles. But it’s just not happening and you’re now busy looking for what the reason is. This is something that you would need to identify yourself. Sure, you can hire an outside firm to do it for you and this is something that many businesses have done, usually with good results. But the problem here is that many small businesses, especially startups, don’t have thousands of dollars a month to spend on “social media experts” who will go over their pages and tell them what improvements to make.

In this case, you need to develop an action plan. This is actually the most simple part of the operation. You will plan what you should change about your social media presence and the steps that you will execute in order to get there. It may take a bit of time, so there’s no sense in rushing it at this point. Once you have everything planned out, it will be time to execute. Actually do the changes that you’ve planned out and carry out any improvements that you feel are necessary in order for your Facebook page to turn into something that is interesting to your users and actually profitable for your company.

The first step of the plan involves identifying the issues that are causing poor results. We’re going to present you a list of things that may cause your fans to be “less than enthusiastic” about your social media presence. We will also give you some ways that you can employ to change all of that and turn things around once and for all. Consistently applying these changes will get you what you were hoping for: a Facebook page this is more “alive”, that has fans which participate in the discussion, like your posts, add content and share some of the content that you’ve put up.

Debunking Common Myths About Google Panda: Part 2

Debunking Common Myths About Google Panda: Part 2

With all the myths floating around on the internet about the Google Panda update, it’s time that we made some sense about what that update really means and how webmasters can adjust to it. Here are some more myths about the update that we can debunk:

  • Large Sites that Consistently Ranked Well Will Not be Affected

There are some major players in the web content field that were hit by the Panda update. About.com, a site that provides information on various topics thanks to guides and FAQ’s submitted by its users has stated that it saw a “moderate” impact on its traffic due to Panda.

Associated Content, a site where different writers can submit articles and that was owned by Yahoo! Has also been affected. This has resulted in Yahoo! Retiring the site, opting instead to keep some of its best content and to move it over to a new site called Yahoo Voices.

Therefore, no matter how big or popular a site is, it can be affected by Panda.

  • Sites That Were Penalized Will Still Keep the Penalty After Improving Their Content

Web pages that are in Google’s index are run through the filter on an occasional basis. Pages that were improved will have a chance to get back on track. The important thing to know is that you should seek to make improvements to your entire site to ensure that it has quality content and not just a few pages. It may take a while for your site to recover from its penalty, however Panda is not designed to permanently ban a site from the search index.

  • Only the Pages With Poor Content Will be Penalized

Unfortunately, Panda will apply a penalty that will be valid for the entire site if there are enough pages that are classified as poor quality. It is possible that some pages on a website that have been penalized will keep their good ranking if they are of very high quality, however. But this is not something that will happen in all cases. Therefore, webmasters need to be sure that all of the pages on their site have high quality content, or risk getting penalized.

  • Only Websites That Have Articles on Them Will be Penalized

Again, all web pages will go through Panda, so it doesn’t matter what type of content you have on your site. It will still be subjected to the rules of the filter. Even if your website only has pages which have one or two hundred words on them and can’t really be classified as “articles”, your site could face a penalty if these pages are ranked as poor quality. No matter what you have on your website, you should follow the basic SEO recommendations, such as making sure that good spelling and grammar is used on all pages, not overusing keywords, not inserting irrelevant keywords into pages they don’t belong, etc.

More Efficient Use of Online Marketing: Checking Your Progress

More Efficient Use of Online Marketing: Checking Your Progress

If you own a local business and use the internet to promote it, then you’re probably concerned as to whether you’re getting the results that you’ve wanted from your marketing efforts. After all, nobody wants to spend time and money on online advertising only to make little progress with it. This is why it is very important for you to monitor your progress with internet marketing and see which of your strategies work and which ones don’t work as well. This will give you an idea as to whether you should keep doing what you’re already doing, or whether there are certain changes or improvements that would be in order for you.

While this sounds easy to say, keeping up with the performance of your online marketing efforts will require a bit of work, especially if you haven’t really been paying attention to the results that it’s been bringing you. This happens to many small business owners that get caught up with their main line of work, especially if their business has been doing quite well as of late.

The first thing that you would want to do is to make a list of all of your marketing and advertising channels that you’re using. Then, divide these into sub groups. So for example if you use social media and classified ads sites, you would have these 2 as main advertising types. Then you would list the specific social networking sites that you use for your business, as well as the classified ads websites that you post your ads to on a regular basis. The same can be applied to other methods of online marketing that your business uses, such as pay per click ads, where you can further drill down the traffic and results that you’re getting by each network, each specific ad campaign & ad copies, as well as individual text or banner ads that you’re running on the network. Remember to be as detailed as possible as this will help you optimize your efforts.

Now that you have this list done, you would need to track where you website traffic is coming from. If you haven’t already set up a tracking script (there are many free ones out there that you can use), look at your server logs to see where the traffic on your business website is coming from.

As for tracking conversions (visitors who became paying client or took other action that is profitable for you), there are many free scripts that you can use in order to see which clicks are converting, if your site is directly selling items to customers. Otherwise, if customers contact you by phone or walk into your place of business, then tracking conversions won’t be that easy since you will be limited to asking customers how they found out about your business.

If you’re satisfied with the results, then keep doing what you’re doing… but keep paying attention to where your traffic is coming from. If on the other hand, you want to improve some things, then we have some more tips for you tomorrow.

Improving the Quality of Your E-Commerce Site

If you run an e-commerce site, one of your main concerns is obviously how to make your business as profitable as possible. This can be done in various ways, such as by using advertising methods that would direct high quality traffic to your website, as well as using various on site and off site methods to retain existing customers and make them come back to shop at your website again. Most e-commerce website operators would say that they are satisfied with how their website is operating, but there are always some things that you can consider improving in order to make things better, both for you and your customers.

Some of these main elements are the look and feel of the site, prices and policies, promotions available to your customers, as well as general service and support that you provide for your products. Remember, it’s not just about the quality of the products themselves (though this is an important point), but also about your website and how you run your business in general.

But which improvements should you make to your website? There are a few ways to find out, however one of the most important ones would be simply to ask your customers and website visitors about how they feel about your online business.

Getting feedback from customers is relatively simple. One of the more common ways of getting it is by having a small message on your site which invites them to take a poll about what they like on your site and what they don’t. It would also be a good idea to include a form where someone can write specific concerns that they have which aren’t listed in the poll options.

If you notice that participation is low, you may consider offering an incentive, such as a small discount on their next order, an additional item for free, participation in a contest to win a prize, etc.

The next best way would be to pay attention to your social media accounts. If your customers visit your Facebook page, they could leave you some comments or questions on your wall. Take their opinions into consideration, as this will help you see how you can improve your website.

Of course, let’s not forget direct communications between your customers and you. If several of your customers contact your support about a problem during the checkout process, or a section of your website being difficult to navigate, for example, then these are certainly things worth looking into further and fixing as soon as possible.

Remember that listening to your customers and site visitors is the best way of getting the a customers perspective on how well your website is doing.

Tomorrow we will explore some more ways that you can improve the quality of your e-commerce website, which will give it the potential to be more profitable as it provides a better and more problem free online shopping experience for your buyers.

Learn From The Competition

Learn From The Competition

When running an online business, there are a lot of great resources you can look to for inspiration about improvements you can make to your site. The biggest source of inspiration is often overlooked.  You can actually learn a lot about how to improve your site by looking at what your competitors are doing.

Start by making a list of five to ten competitors in your niche that you feel are doing things the right way. Try to pick sites with better Alexa ranks and Google page ranks than your own. Then sit down and take a good long look at each site. Read some of their articles, browse through their archives, check out their store if they have one, and take notes on the experience. Be sure to jot down both your likes, and dislikes about their sites. Then, take some time, and think about how each like or dislike can be applied to your site. If, for example, you really like the image gallery set up they have, see if you can find a similar script to implement on your site. If they’re implementing an interesting feature that you don’t have in place, think about putting that feature on your site. The ultimate goal here is to make your site stronger by implementing strengths found on other sites. If a particular feature you find on another site won’t work on yours, don’t force it. It’s better to skip a feature rather than to try to implement it poorly, and hurt your site’s usability.

This practice doesn’t just apply to your website either. If your competitors have email lists, sign up for them. See what they’re doing with their list that you aren’t doing. Find out what sort of information they’re sharing with their subscribers, and see if you can find any useful ideas to help you adjust your own strategy.

If they have a membership site, consider signing up for their free trial, if they offer one. That way you can get a look at exactly what they’re charging for, and how it stacks up against your offerings.

There’s no shame in learning what you can from your competition. If they’re implementing interesting features, your users will expect your site to start implementing those features. By paying attention to the competition, you can get a feel for how things are changing in your niche, and what you need to be doing to keep up.
