Common Mistakes in Social Media Marketing

A lot of businesses, both big and small, have realized the importance and the virtually unlimited potential that social media marketing has. Of course, participating in social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Myspace is good for any business. However, you social media marketing campaigns need to be done properly in order for them to net you the maximum benefit. There are certain things that are best avoided. Here is an overview of the most common mistakes that businesses make when using various kinds of social media sites:

Excessive Advertising

When establishing a presence on social media sites, the first thing that any business owner needs to keep in mind is that these sites were never built to be used as advertising platforms for businesses. Rather, they were created with the goal of providing a place for people to connect with others. Therefore, if all you do is bombard people with commercial messages, they will either drop you or simply not pay attention to what you are saying. Advertisements, such as posting promotional Tweets or Facebook wall messages should be done in limited numbers.

Not Updating Your Page

Social networks are places where users constantly post new information about themselves for the world to see. Your business page should be no different. Make sure that you update it regularly. Even if you don’t have any new products or promotions, you could always make some interesting posts related to your business, such as industry news, information on upcoming product launches, or general advice that is related to your niche. Let’s say that you are in the business of selling vacuum cleaners. You could post information on how to select the best vacuum cleaner, etc.

If you have a page that looks “dead” because it wasn’t updated in a long time, users will gradually lose interest in it as there is nothing new for them to see.

Not Spending Enough Time on Putting Together Your Page

Your business page on social networks is there to reflect your business. As such, its design and message should be consistent with your existing website. If possible, choose a color scheme and font that resembles closely to the one on your main website. It is important that your social media page looks interesting and well made. If you put something together that looks like you made it in 5 minutes while watching TV, it will give it a “cheap” look that reflects poorly on your business.

If you need ideas or are having trouble improving your page, there are plenty of guides that provide details on using specific social networks that you can buy or download for free online. There are also various social media marketing forums that can provide advice or design a page for you. Remember, while building a social media page is not difficult, you will still have to put in a decent amount of time and effort into it if you expect it to bring you good results.

Efficient Use Of Social Media

Efficient Use Of Social Media

Everyone notices that the world around us is always changing at a fast pace. After all, we don’t live in the dark ages anymore, so technology, culture and society are always evolving. The same can be said for the internet and especially social media sites.

If your business is not on social media sites such as Facebook or Twitter, it is the time that you consider joining them and create a page for your business or website on these social networks. It doesn’t cost anything and it can be done in less than an hour if you are not the most computer savvy user, or a few minutes if you are an internet expert.

But how do you truly take advantage of all the social media sites? To do this, you need to be aware of one thing: the social media world is always evolving as well. Let’s take a look at Facebook. It currently has over 500 million active users around the world. But there is a fact about the site that very few people actually know. At first, Facebook was only designed for students who were currently enrolled in a college or university. The site then opened up so that anyone could sign up and also create fan pages for businesses. This created a wealth of opportunity for business owners to promote their offerings on the site.

Besides the most famous sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, there are plenty of smaller social networking, social bookmarking and video sharing sites that, while being used by thousands of people, are often ignored by marketers. Not expanding your reach to the smaller sites out there could be a big mistake. Here’s why:

1. The potential for growth

The internet world can be quite unpredictable at times. There is obviously no way to predict whether a certain site will one day detrone Facebook or YouTube in terms of popularity. But it could happen. By creating a profile and being active on various social media sites, you will be one of the first ones in should a site explode in popularity. And it doesn’t take much time: creating the pages and making regular posts only takes about an hour each day. You can outsource it if your schedule is really tight and you want to save time.

2. These sites still have traffic

Even if they aren’t as popular, smaller social sites still have people who visit them, otherwise their owners would simply close them down. Even though having a presence on a certain site may only bring you a few hits a day, this is still good traffic that is going to your site. With online traffic, you never know which visitor will be profitable for you. Out of these few visitors that you get from small social sites, one of them could become a great client who makes regular orders, or could turn out to be an excellent business partner who could help your company get even more online profits than it is doing now.

Paid Social Media Ads – Are They Good For Internet Marketers?

Paid Social Media Ads – Are They Good For Internet Marketers?

Advertising on social media has been a topic that is widely discussed in internet marketing circles. Given the fact that social networks are receiving millions of visitors daily and have hundreds of millions of active users around the globe, it is no wonder that internet marketers are trying various ways to make profit from them. It is, of course, possible to create a page for your business on social networks and have people add you to their profiles. While it can be quite effective if you run a local business, such as a bar or restaurant, or otherwise provide a very unique and interesting product, this may not always be the best choice when trying to market something on social networks.

There is an alternative, however. Social networks such as Facebook and MySpace have an advertising platform in place where you can pay for ads on a cost per click (CPC) or cost per thousand impressions (CPM) basis. The way that these advertising networks operate are similar to the Google Adwords content network, but with a few differences. First, your ads are only distributed on pages in the respective social network’s site and not on third party sites. You also have the opportunity to include a small graphic next to your ad text.

One of the main things that makes buying social media advertising attractive to internet marketers is that you get the ability to targeted various groups of users with your ads. You are not limited to simply targeting people based on their location. You can choose things such as gender, age, relationship status and interests in order to better target your ads.

But one question remains and is subject to a lot of debate among internet marketers: is it really possible to make a profit when using paid social media advertising? Well the answer is yes. It actually HAS to be. You see, if no one was profiting from these ads, advertisers wouldn’t pay for them and social do networks would lose their source of funding.

The main consideration for an internet marketer using social media ads would be what type of offers you would be running. Remember that those visiting social networks are usually not currently on the lookout for things to buy. Check out the social networks for yourself and see what kinds of ads are being served on their pages. You will notice that most of them are offers that do not require the user to buy anything, such as ads for survey sites, dating sites, coupons, credit card applications, insurance quotes, etc. These are the types of offers that typically are the most successful when promoting via social networking ads. A good strategy would be to check out the ads that you get served with while browsing the site. Ads that stay there for longer than a week or so are usually the ones that are bringing in some profit for the advertisers.

A Successful Business Product

A Successful Business Product

In order to make money online with a product it has to be successful. To make a successful product you must consider products that will attract the most attention, products you are extremely knowledgeable in, and can enjoy creating.

Attracting Attention
Do some online research and you can easily find products that are sought after in today’s market. If you are looking to create a product for use on a social media site, it would only be fitting that you focus on the more popular sites for social networking, like Facebook and Twitter. If you were to focus on a media site like MySpace, it is a less popular subject today than it once was, therefore it will not make as much profit as possible.

Knowledgeable
Products you market online should be related to a niche that you are familiar and knowledgeable in. Your consumers want to know that you are an expert in the particular topic you speak about. In order to ensure your consumers a product they would want to pay for you need to deliver information that is not easily accessible in other places. If a consumer finds value in your product you are more likely to receive recommendations and repeat business.

Creativity
Use your creativity to market your product and share information in ways that other sources do not. Since you will be dedicating a lot of time and attention to your product you need to make sure it is something you enjoy doing. The more you can enjoy creating one product the more information you deliver to your consumer, who can easily tell if you are passionate about your particular topic of choice.

Consider these three things before you develop any product to market online, especially if you are looking to generate money from your product!

Social Media For Small Business – The Advantages

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Social Media For Small Business – The Advantages

Many small business owners have heard of the power of social media and how it can be beneficial for their business. It is indeed possible to spread the word about your business by using social networks and they are in fact one of the best tools to do so. Now what makes social marketing so great? Here are some of its unique advantages:

An large established user base.

Popular sites such as Facebook and Twitter receive millions of visitors every single day of the year. This means one simple thing: the traffic is already there. You just need to establish a presence on these sites and get users to see your materials. Among the millions of users which frequent these sites, chances are that some are looking for something that you are offering.

Lower costs.

When selecting an advertising method, something that many business owners worry about is how much it will cost to use. Many small businesses don’t have much of a budget to spend on online advertising. The fact is, creating a page about your business on social networks costs you nothing. It is completely free to use. If you want your page to look even better and be more functional there are many tools available which let you do so. Some are free, while others require that you pay a monthly fee to use them. But even the paid tools will cost you a lot less than other advertising options.

Possibility for your page to go viral.

You may have heard about the viral effect. It is when something spreads among people without intervention from whoever created it. Social networks are the ideal place if you want your page to go viral. If you make it attractive and catchy enough, people will share it with their friends, who will then share it with their friends and so on. Pages which are truly unique and interesting could receive millions of views in total.

Flexibility and opportunities for expansion.

Any social media site is constantly evolving. New features are added. New options for communicating are created. All of this means even more opportunities for you to spread the message about something that you want to promote. You get complete choice on how you structure your advertising campaigns. For example, you can either create a main page for your business, or create several different ones which will promote various products or services that you provide.

Also, new sites could appear in the near future. And these new sites could open the door for even further promotional opportunities for you. Sure, Facebook and Twitter are probably the most popular options offered right now, but who knows what will appear in 1 year or in 5 years. If a new social network appears, why not establish your presence on it right away rather than wait to determine whether it will become popular? This will allow you to stay one step ahead of the game, rather than constantly playing “catch up” with your competitors.

Social Media For Small Business – Choosing The Right Network

Social Media For Small Business – Choosing The Right Network

If you own a small business, you may have heard about the possibility to use social media in order to increase your bottom line. While this is certainly true, there are a few things that you need to know about social media before you jump in. It is always important to have a properly made marketing strategy in order for your efforts to be beneficial for you.

The first thing that you would need to consider is what social network to use for your marketing campaigns. There are various networks out there and they all have their unique advantages. For example, Facebook has a demographically diverse user base and the highest number of users. This makes it a good all around choice to promote your business.

LinkedIn is more geared towards business users. It’s main purpose is for individuals and businesses to connect to each other and share information. This makes it a poor choice if your goal is to promote your products or services online. However, it can help you find qualified employees who are looking for a job. It could also be a great tool to network with other business owners and vendors. This will allow you to form partnerships with other businesses and individuals that could have something useful to offer you. For example, if you need your main website redesigned, you can network with a web design company that can do it for you.

Twitter is a network that lets users post Tweets, or short message to keep others in the know as to what they are doing. It is often used by people to share some information about their lives with friends. But it does have significant advantages for businesses as well. You can post updates about your products or services, or announce a new promotion to your followers. It is also possible to put your website link in your Tweets to drive additional traffic to your website.

Despite the fact that social networks can be a powerful tool for the promotion of your business, remember that their main purpose is for users to be entertained and share information. After all, people do not log in to a social network just to be bombarded with advertisements and promotional messages. If your postings consist of nothing but that, it is quick way to simply get ignored. Offer your users some useful content that doesn’t sound too promotional. For example, you can post how to guides or links to news articles that are related to your industry and that the users will have an interest in.

Also remember to update your page frequently with fresh content. People always want to see something new and if you don’t post anything to your social media page in a while, they will simply lose interest in it rather quickly. Do everything possible to make them want to visit your page on a regular basis.

Facebook Advertising

Facebook Advertising

If you were looking into internet marketing ideas on how to promote your online business, you may have heard about social media advertising and was wondering about how you can use it to your advantage.

Advertising on social media simply means to drive traffic your site by using social networks such as Facebook. When you think of a social network, you would probably associate it with a place where people come to socialize and exchange information with friends, associates and family members. It is true that this is the main reason why social networks exist, but there are ways that you can use them for marketing.

One thing that you will get by advertising on Facebook is a great amount of exposure. Every single day there are literally millions of people which sign on to that site. While they may not exactly be in buying mode when they visit Facebook, they could nonetheless be interested in what you have to offer if you just had the chance to present it in front of their eyes.

There are two main ways to advertise on Facebook. The first one consists of creating a fan page for your business. This is essentially a page where you get to put in some details about what you do, insert a few pictures such as your logo or photos of your products if you are selling physical goods, some contact details and a link back to your website.

You would then make efforts to get as many fans as possible to like your page. This can be accomplished by various means, such as asking your existing customers to become a fan of yours or having a link to your Facebook fan page on your main website, putting the link in your forum signature, inserting it into blog posts, etc.

A great thing about the fan page is that it has the potential of going viral. When a Facebook user becomes a fan of something, this will be added onto their profile. When their friends see their profile, they will then be able to click through to your fan page. From there, they could continue on to your website if they are interested or even become fans themselves. If you have a very unique or interesting offering, you could get many new customers as more and more people will become your fans.

Another way to advertise on Facebook is to make use of the Facebook ads platform. It is based on a Cost Per Click model similar to Google Adwords. You create a small ad and insert a small icon related to what you are offering. What is good about Facebook ads is the fact that you can target who sees your ads by selecting a few different variables. You can target people by age, country, city, relationship status, etc. This lets you ensure that only the people who would be more likely to buy from you will get served with your ad and be able to click on it.

More Tips For Driving Traffic To Your Site

More Tips For Driving Traffic To Your Site

A strong internet marketing campaign is nothing without traffic. The more traffic you can generate for your website, the more potential customers you’ll have looking at your products. There are a few important things you can keep in mind in order to help you drive traffic to your site, and ultimately, generate more sales.

Research

Do some research to determine what qualities your audience is looking for in a website. If you already have a little bit of traffic, offer your current audience a poll about what features they’d like to see you implement in the future. If you’re just starting out, take a look at other sites in your niche, and see what types of features they’re offering their audience. Do everything in your power to offer your audience a rich set of attractive features.

Strong Writing

No matter what niche you’re in, chances are, you’re not alone. That means your content has to stand out if you’re going to succeed in driving more traffic to your site. Take the time to write strong articles, and other interesting content for your site. Don’t just try to recreate what other sites in your niche have done, try to do something different, and unique. If you’re having trouble writing high quality content, there’s no shame in hiring a writer.

Advertise

In addition to the Google and Facebook ads you’re probably already familiar with, you can also set up deals with larger sites in your niche whereby you can get an ad placed on their site for a fixed amount of time. Be sure to get any and all information you can about their traffic, and their audience before agreeing to place the ad on their site. Also, don’t advertise on sites that don’t relate directly to your audience. You’re more likely to get new visitors from your target audience that haven’t heard of your site than you are to get visitors from a different audience all together.

So remember, do some research about your visitors’ wants and needs, set your writing apart from the crowd in some way, and advertise with larger sites in your niche. These things will help you to generate more traffic to your site in no time.

The Pros And Cons Of Facebook Ads

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

The Pros And Cons Of Facebook Ads

Setting up a Facebook fan page can be a great way to generate traffic for your website, but it takes a lot of time and effort. If you don’t have the spare time to work on a fan page, but you do have some room in your advertising budget, you might want to think about using Facebook ads.

Facebook has over 500 million users, and they fall into every age group and demographic you can think of. When you’re setting up your Facebook ad campaign, Facebook gives you all the tools you need to reach out to your target audience. You can use parameters like age, gender, hobbies, and interests to target your ads at the people most likely to click them. If you know who your audience is, you can reach them on Facebook with these tools.

The results of using highly targeted advertising like this are generally pretty good. The odds that each person seeing your ad will click on it are pretty good, and once they make their way to your site, they’re likely to come back as long as your content is compelling.

If you’re familiar with internet marketing and advertising, you’re probably wondering how Facebook ads stack up against Google Adwords. Well, Facebook gives you more direct control over who sees your ads. With all of the options you have at your disposal you can really narrow it down, and make the most of your ad campaign. Google Adwords still has one key advantage, your ads show up in search results. In other words, your ads show up for people who are searching terms directly related to your site. Neither service is “better” than the other, they just work differently. Keep that in mind before spending your advertising budget on either service.

With over 500 million users, Facebook is a great place to reach out to your audience. The results of a Facebook advertising campaign will depend directly on your site, it’s content, and how well you know your target audience. If you have a site with compelling content, and you know your target audience, you can get a high yield for your investment in Facebook ads.

Keep An Eye On The Competition

Keep An Eye On The Competition

Chances are. your website isn’t the most popular website in your niche. Even if it is, you can still benefit from keeping an eye on the competition. It’s important to know what other sites in your niche are doing so you can do a better job of giving your customers the features they’re looking for. There are a few ways you can find out what’s going on in your niche, and none of them will take terribly long .

First thing’s first, you need to know who your competition is. Do a Google search for any terms relevant to your niche, and see who comes up. Any site that ranks higher than you for keywords you’re optimizing on is a competitor worth looking at. Make a list of your top competitors that you can refer to later. Try to pick sites that not only rank higher than you in search, but also share similar messages and ideas with your site. Keep the list relatively short. Try to stick with ten or fifteen sites that appeal to the audience you’re reaching out to.

Once you have that list in hand, start looking at each site on a regular basis, and see what new features they’re adding. Try to get a sense for how those new features are received by their audience, and think about which ones might apply to your site. If you can implement a feature that other sites are having success with, do it. It’s important to do what you can to tailor that feature to your site and your audience as best you can.

You can also get an idea about what your competition is up to by searching for them on social networking sites like Facebook, and Twitter. If you search their names, you won’t just find their official accounts, but also things that other people are saying about them. By getting an idea of what other people are saying about the competition, you can see what qualities people like about them, and what qualities people don’t care for. By paying attention to these things, you can get an idea of what direction to take your own site.

It’s important to keep an eye on the competition. The features they’re implementing help to shape the expectations your audience has for what a site in your niche should be. By keeping an eye on the competition you are keeping an eye on the future of your niche. That way, you can evolve your site accordingly.

Be An Internet Marketing Success

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Be An Internet Marketing Success

When you first start out with internet marketing, success can seem very far away. There’s no guarantee that any new project you launch will succeed, and the work can be hard. There are a few things you can do to set yourself up for success though.

Build A Network

Having a network of other internet marketers, and influential people in your niche at your disposal can be a great help in launching any new project you might be working on.  You can get valuable advice that might help with your launch, as well as a little free word of mouth advertising. The easiest method for building a good internet marketing network is through social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Do a search on either site for your niche, and for internet marketing, and try to befriend anyone who has a lot of other friends or followers. Once you’ve made some friends in internet marketing, and your niche, they can help you to launch your next project successfully.

Keep Up With Technology

The internet, and technology as a whole are constantly evolving. In order to be successful with internet marketing, you need to pay close attention to what direction the internet, and technology as a whole are taking. If you know what people are talking about online, and how they’re doing that talking, you’ll be better equipped to join in the conversation. For example, a few yars back, when social networking sites started popping up, the first people to figure out how to effectively use them as marketing tools were hugely successful. For a little while, they didn’t have a lot of competition to worry about, and as such, they enjoyed a great deal of success. If you stay on top of trends, you might find yourself getting a head start on the competition the next time a new service catches everyone’s attention.

Target Your Audience

Once you know what product or service you want to sell, you have to figure out who you plan to sell it to. You’re going to have to do a little market research about who is going to want to buy your product. Think about their age group, income bracket, and any other factors that might help you determine the right way to get their attention. With this information in hand, you’ll be able to construct a well thought out marketing campaign.

Generating Testimonials For Your Products

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Generating Testimonials For Your Products

Selling just about anything online can be extremely challenging. Every product imaginable is already for sale somewhere on the internet, and that means you need to set your product apart from the crowd in order to get it to sell well. One of the best ways to get your product some positive attention is to get a lot of favorable user testimonials up on your website. There are two sure fire ways you can generate some quality user testimonials from your customers.

The first is to offer them something in return for their testimonial. By “something” we don’t mean money. Your customers won’t trust a paid testimonial. In fact, paid testimonials can even lead to a negative impact on sales. Customers get the impression that if you have to buy your testimonials, there must be something wrong with the product, or even that you were paying for favorable testimonials only. Instead of money, consider offering them a discount on their next purchase, or a coupon they can use whenever they’d like.

The other sure fire method is to simply ask your customers for testimonials. A week after they receive the product, send them an email asking them to submit a testimonial. Also, if you have any promotional videos up on your site for the product, make mention right in the video that testimonials are appreciated. If you have a Facebook, or Twitter account, send out a message occasionally asking your users to submit testimonials. You don’t want to bombard your customers with requests, but asking occasionally is likely to yield results, even if you’re not offering anything in exchange for the testimonial.

Once you have some testimonials coming in, it’s important to be clear about what information you are going to share about the customer. For example, some people might prefer that you only show their initials, rather than their full name. Others might be OK with their first name, and last initial. Some people might be comfortable with you showing what town their from, others might not. It’s a good idea to yield to the customer’s wishes and display their name the way they want you to. It’s better to have more testimonials up than not, so it’s OK to sacrifice some of those details in exchange for having one more testimonial on your site.

Ask your customers for testimonials, offer them incentives, and honor their wishes. If you do those things, you’ll have a lot of high quality testimonials up in no time.

Generate Buzz For Your New Website

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Generate Buzz For Your New Website

So you just launched a new website, and you want to generate some positive attention for it. Generating buzz or hype isn’t as hard as you might think. You just have to follow a few simple steps, and you’ll be on your way in no time.

Start off by using social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook to talk about your site. Don’t just talk about the site using your social networking accounts, but encourage your friends and family to talk about it on their own. In order to generate buzz, the positive attention your site is getting on social networks has to appear natural. If other users suspect that you’re just trying to generate hype for your site, then you will actually achieve the opposite effect of damaging your site’s reputation. Try to get a group of your friends and family together that can start spreading the word about your site for you. As they talk about it, their friends will go to your site. Some of those friends will talk about it too, and slowly, but surely, you’ll begin to build some buzz around your site.

Consider volunteering some of your services to another website. If, for example, you have launched a site about technology, consider doing a guest spot writing for another tech website. This will give you the chance to introduce yourself to another audience, and get them excited about your site.

Don’t underestimate the power of physical items. Get some T-shirts, pens, and buttons made up with your site’s information on them. Hand these items out generously, and give some to your friends and family to do the same with. As these items spread, so too will your site.

Give out your business card whenever you can. If you’re out to lunch, leave your business card on the table along with the tip. If you see a bulletin board at the grocery store, pin your business card to it. This might seem a little futile, but remember, everyone who sees your URL might visit it. Everyone that visits it might tell a friend.

It’s important to remember that, while these methods can help, the amount of buzz your site generates will be directly related to the content it holds. For example, if you run a plumbing supply website, don’t expect to generate a huge amount of buzz. Plumbing supplies are great when you need them, but on a day to day basis, they’re just not very exciting.  If your content is interesting, and you follow these steps, you’ll start to see buzz for your site in no time.
