Building Your Online Reputation: Which Channels to Use – Part 2

Yesterday, we’ve seen some channels that you can use online to get your business a good reputation. There are a few others that you can use as well. Of course, you will need to adapt these to the niche that your business is in and not all may apply to you, but you should try to use as many as possible as it will reinforce positive information about your company online.

  • Discussion Forums and Online Bulletin Boards

Forums related to your industry are a great way to make your products and business shine online, by showing your potential customers that you’re active in engaging them and also available to quickly answer any questions. But you should remember to follow all the rules specific to the forum that you’re using. Spamming online forums is definitely not the best way to build your reputation online and will probably accomplish the exact opposite. The best way to use forums is to advertise in the “Buy/Sell” section, participate in general discussion and have your company website in your forum profile and signature. This can also help you get useful backlinks for SEO purposes.

  • Review Sites

There are plenty of business review sites that are specific to certain industries. Here you won’t have much to do, as it’s your customers that will be leaving reviews on them after they’ve made a purchase from you. What you can do, however, is to add your business to some of these sites and keep checking them regularly to see if users have posted comments.

  • Blogs

Having your own blog can definitely be a good way to help promote your business online, but when it comes to establishing your reputation, you can do a lot by participating in other people’s blogs. Leave comments that include a link to your website on blogs that are related to your line of business. You can also become a guest blogger on another person’s blog. This will get you a link to your website at the bottom of the post and will establish you as a knowledgeable person in your niche.

  • Press Releases

Online press release sites are quite good if you want your business to get more recognition. You can write a press release and submit it to several free sites when you do something new, such as opening up a new location or launching a new product. Those who search for your company or products that you offer online will see the press release under “News” results in Google and will often be interesting in reading more. In many press release directories, you can also include a link back to your main site, which again will be very helpful as far as SEO is concerned.

These are the main methods that you can use to establish a good reputation online. Tomorrow we will go into more details on how you can more efficiently use some of these channels.

Building Your Online Reputation: Which Channels to Use

Your online reputation is essentially everything that can be found about your business online, whether it’s content that’s created by you or by other people. Obviously, if you want to build a solid online reputation, there are certain basic things that you need to do, right from the very beginning. If your business is brand new, it may seem to be a bit difficult to get started, but in reality you just need to take a few steps in the right direction. We will now present you some useful tips on how to make this all happen:

  • Have a Website With All the Necessary Information

Obviously, you know that if you want to be found in the online world, your business will need a website. But your site should also be complete, with detailed information about your products, as well as information on what they’re good for and how to use them. This will give more pages from your company in search results and will also help your site get found more easily.

  • Allow User Reviews and Ratings of Your Products When Possible

When people shop online, they not only want to find the product that they’re looking for, but they also want to know if it’s good or not. One advantage of online shopping versus in-person shopping is that on the internet, you can quickly read some comments that were left by other users about a product. If what you offer is of good quality, then allowing users on your site to leave a rating or comment about the product will be beneficial for you, as an online shopper will instantly see that people were satisfied with their purchase.

  • Get Your Company in Business Directories

This serves several purposes. It helps people find your business, it provides useful backlinks for SEO purposes and it also helps you build your reputation in a few different ways. First, the more your company is “out there”, as in listed in several online business directories, the more it appears to be a stable and legitimate business. Furthermore, many online business directories have a feature that allows their users to leave reviews about businesses that they’ve used in the past. Another excellent way to get positive user comments to show up when someone Googles your company’s name.

  • Participate in Social Media

Again, this is great for marketing, but is also great for building your reputation online. All you need to do is to set up accounts on social media sites such as Facebook, Google+, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. People can now comment about your company and leave reviews of your products. You can also use your social media accounts to release important announcements related to happenings in your business.

There are also a few other channels that you can use to quickly build your online reputation. We’ll take a look at these tomorrow.

Why SEO Still Isn’t Going Anywhere For a While

Why SEO Still Isn’t Going Anywhere For a While

It happens time and time again. Google makes an update to the way their ranking algorithm works. Business owners, webmasters and marketers are affected and some pages go down in the SERPs. Panic sets in some online marketing blogs and website articles. Titles such as “SEO is Dead” or “Google is Penalizing E-Commerce Sites” start appearing. This gives the impression that SEO is now a thing of the past and that Google has some magic and arbitrary way to rank websites which nobody can do anything about.

This has happened again recently when Google launched their Panda update and its revisions. But despite what you read on these blogs, SEO is not dead and is unlikely to die out anytime soon. Webmasters can still use various on site or off site optimization techniques with the hopes of getting their pages to rank better in search results. Except that there is one major change: Google is seeking to reward quality web pages that provide users the content that they’re looking for. The focus is now on short term growth. Not on who can cram the most keywords on a page or build a million backlinks in a day.

Ok, now that you know SEO still works. What has changed? Some of the methods and best practices used in the SEO world will need to be adjusted slightly.

The major part about the updates is the on site content. If you have a website that contains “articles” which are just stuffed with keywords and are otherwise completely nonsensical, get rid of them. They will only get you penalized. Strive to have information that is useful, legible and highly relevant to what your website is all about. Include a mix of informational content about your niche and sales materials which promote your products. This will not only lead to better user satisfaction (and more conversions), plus likely to get you better rankings, or at least keep you from getting penalized.

The quality of your website is also another factor that is apparently used by Google to determine how a page ranks. Now we don’t know which metrics Google measures exactly, but these can be guessed relatively easily: page load time, easy navigation, as well as the presence of a site map that allows users to find a specific page on your website with ease.

Then, there is something new: user engagement. What does this mean, exactly? Again, the exact metrics used by Google are unknown, but there are a few theories. User engagement means that website visitors interact with a website rather than just read the content on it. This could include social opportunities such as social media buttons, plus allowing user comments on your articles. Many webmasters have noticed that website which give users more opportunities for interaction tend to do much better in SERPs. But how do you accomplish this? There are a few ways that you can use. While they may not be guaranteed to propel you to 1st place on Google, they may help you rank better. We will take a look at these tomorrow.

Building Links to Your Site: Which Content Works Best

Building Links to Your Site: Which Content Works Best

We all want high quality back links to our website. But what kind of content do you need to add to it in order to make other people want to link to it? Getting natural backlinks from other sites that are interested in what you’ve put on yours is a great way to increase your SEO rankings. Remember, the more interesting and useful your content is, the more likely it is to draw attention and make other webmasters want to link to it. Here are some examples about the type of content that you can post on your website or blog:

  • Web based tools

Sometimes, a text resource or a video just won’t be the answer that someone is looking for. However, a web based tool might be the answer for them. For example, a simple tool that checks the keyword density of an article or website, or one that analyzes the SEO worthiness of a site, etc. If you don’t have coding experience, you can easily outsource the creation of a simple web based tool for less than $50.  If people find it useful, chances are they will link to it on their own site.

  • Flash games

Flash games are one of the pieces of online content that are the most linked to in the online world. This is simply due to their popularity. If you create an original game that plenty of web users find fun and entertaining, then there is a high chance that a lot of them will link to it.

  • Be among the first to talk about an issue

One of the reasons people get online is to find information about something that has happened recently in a niche that they’re interested in. Be among the first to post an article on your blog about the news. Offer some interesting commentary or analysis about it. If you do it right, then you can have a good amount of backlinks coming in to your website before you even know it.

  • Create a resource for beginners

No matter what your niche is, chances are that you can create a quick guide that will help beginners understand it and get on the right track. Some niche site owners may get questions from beginners but don’t always have the time to answer them or to write content that will address these questions. This explains why simple and informative beginners guides are linked to very often from other websites related to the niche.

  • Create content with long term potential

Not all the content on your website or blog needs to be related to new happenings or something that is popular now but will be forgotten in the next 2 weeks. Content that has long term popularity potential is simply content which will remain useful for years to come. For example, you can post information on how to fix common computer problems or advice on choosing the best hosting company for those who want to start a website. Posts that were written 2 or 3 years ago on these topics are still relevant and useful today, thus giving them the long term potential that they need.

Avoid Going With Bad SEO Partners

Avoid Going With Bad SEO Partners

Many webmasters that are looking to have their site go up on search engines are also seeking to partner up with others to help them manage either all or part of their SEO needs. Indeed, there are many reputable firms out there which offer excellent services to their clients. But remember, anybody can call themselves a “SEO Expert” and offer their services to unsuspecting buyers. If you want to avoid wasting money on poor results, here are some things you will want to keep under consideration:

Avoid Giving Large Projects to Unknown Businesses

There are plenty of webmasters out there which would like to have one company handle all of their SEO needs, such as on page optimization, content production, backlink building, etc. While this is fine, it often involves paying more than a few hundred dollars in advance. This is something you should be careful with. Check the reputation of the people you will be dealing with beforehand. Take a look at their online presence to see if they’ve been operating for a long time and if they have some actual satisfied clients.

Be Careful With Cheap Content Providers

One of the main areas of SEO would be the creation of content. We all know that it’s important to have unique articles or blog posts to help rank your pages. There are many content providers online, but also there are many of them which aren’t good. The general rule is avoid those that offer services too cheaply. If they offer to create 10 x 500 word articles for $10… then you should know that something’s not right. Yes, you’ll probably receive your content. But the following will happen: either these will be plagiarized articles that were simply copied from the web and had a few words changed here and there, or they will simply be articles written in poor English that just have your keywords thrown in at random. Anyone familiar with SEO will know that such content will be useless to you.

Same Thing With Backlink Builders

First of all, buying backlinks is not a recommended practice for durable SEO. Your backlinks should come naturally either from your own efforts such as by including links to your site in social media or YouTube videos that you post, or from other people that link to your site’s pages because they truly found the content to be useful. If you check out freelancing sites or webmaster forums, there will often be members claiming that they can get you hundreds of high quality backlinks for a few dollars. More often than not, these backlinks are definitely not of the quality that was promised and are actually quite bad, coming from sites that are either unrelated to your niche or which already contain dozens of links to completely different sites, which will do nothing to help you with SEO. Also, too many of these links will get your site penalized as it will look like you’re trying to game the system with search engines.

Can a Blog Help Your Business Site?

Can a Blog Help Your Business Site?

Many small business owners have one main website which contains information about their company and their products. Sometimes it is an e-commerce site where customers can make purchases directly through the site. Obviously, having a website is useful, but what about a blog? Including a blog has many benefits. In fact, some online marketing studies have shown that sites which incorporate a blog get more traffic than a site without one. After all, who doesn’t want to attract more visitors to their website?

Besides the increased traffic, blogs can have many additional benefits for your site. Here are some of them:

  • They can increase your search engine ranking

Search engines such as Google love high quality blogs and having one on your site can do wonders to increase your search engine ranking. It can also provide you with useful backlinks back to your main site as well as relevant parts of it, such as product descriptions.

  • They can establish you as an authority in your niche

The purpose of a blog for a business is not really to sell anything, but rather to show you as an authority in your niche by providing content which your readers will find useful. You can give information about how to best use your products, news about your industry, as well as any advice or tips that your readers will appreciate.

  • Blogs give you another place to interact with your visitors

When you post articles on your blog, you can allow readers to leave comments. This is a great way to get feedback about your blog and your business. It is also an excellent way to answer questions that a customer might have about a certain product. Blog comments give your visitor an easy way to get in touch with you should they be interested in something that you offer, but might not be ready to buy it just yet. Of course, with blog comments there is always the issue of comment spam. However, there are various WordPress plugins that you can use to limit the amount of spam comments that you get. Of course, you can always approve each comment manually, thus eliminating most of the spam. Putting a notice that comments are moderated and approved manually will also serve to deter spammers.

Getting the Most out of Your Blog

To get the most out of a blog, it needs to be updated on a regular basis with fresh new content. This will not only help you when it comes to SEO, but will also be very useful at keeping your readers interested. After all, nobody wants to read a blog that seems “dead” and hasn’t had an update in several months. A good thing about blogs is that you can now include multimedia content such as video on them as well, so if you have a video that you would like to share with your readers, you can put it up on your blog as well.

Attracting Local Visitors To Your Website: More SEO Tips

Attracting Local Visitors To Your Website: More SEO Tips

Yesterday, we saw that there are certain ways that a local business can employ to attract local traffic that will be useful to them. One of these ways is by doing SEO on your site. Now SEO may seem like it is something complicated, but in reality it is not. There are some very simple things that you can do to make your website look more attractive to search engines and thus rise through the rankings faster than you would have ever thought possible. Also, if you need to do some SEO on your site and don’t want to do all of the work yourself, then there are service providers which can do some of the SEO work for you cheaply.

When we talk about SEO, there are a few things that you need to consider if you want to do proper SEO for your small business website. There are two categories of factors which will affect your position in search engines. One is on site factors and the other one is off site factors.

On Site Factors

How your site will do in terms of SEO will depend on how your overall site is designed and the content on it. If you run a local small business, it is better to focus on targeting keywords that have your main product or service name, in addition to the name of the city that you service. That way, you will have less competition that you need to beat to get to the top of search engine results. This is especially true if you are in a relatively small city, then you might only have 2 or 3 competitors. Also, remember to add content to your website regularly. You may want to add a few articles related to your niche that are optimized to your main keyword and the name of your city too.

Off Site Factors

The main off site factor is the amount of backlinks that your site has. Backlinks are the amount of links coming from other websites and that point towards your site. However, quantity is not the main focus here. Quality is more important. The backlinks need to come from reputed sites which have some kind of relation to your niche.

Learning SEO

There are plenty of detailed, yet easy to understand guides on SEO available online. You can find these simply by doing a Google search. Or, you can look through internet marketing forums to find some useful guides, as well as additional advice on SEO techniques that you may want to use.

Outsourcing SEO Work

Doing SEO for your site will involve doing things such as writing articles, building backlinks and submitting your site to business directories. While these could easily be done by yourself, the main drawback is that they take time to do. If you want to outsource these relatively cheaply, then check out some internet marketing forums, as these have a section where people can buy and sell various kinds of services. You can also look at a site such as Fiverr, where you can outsource many tasks for just $5 each.

What You Should Look For When Outsourcing Backlink Creation

What You Should Look For When Outsourcing Backlink Creation

Building backlinks is important to the success of any website. These links help you go up in the rankings at search engines like Google and this will therefore give you more traffic. Building backlinks yourself can sometimes be a time consuming task. This is why plenty of webmasters prefer to outsource the creation of backlinks to an external service so they can focus on other things, such as improving the content of their website.

But in order for your backlinking campaign to be successful, you need to use a service provider that knows what they are doing. Otherwise, you may end up with poor results or they may actually hurt your search engine rankings. Here are some things to look for when selecting a backlinking service provider:

The speed at which the backlinks are done

Google will not like it if a site that only had a few backlinks suddenly starts receiving thousands of them overnight. It will be quite obvious to them that you are trying to “game the system” and go up in search results quickly. Make sure that your service provider understands this and that the posting of the backlinks will be done in a gradual, natural way.

The sites where they post

Backlinks shouldn’t be posted on sites which are plagued with comment spam or are nothing more than a page full of links to other sites. This will probably hurt your rankings more than it will improve them and is therefore best avoided.

The quality of the comments

Posting your website’s link on blogs is how many service providers build backlinks. However, for them to be effective, the backlinks would need to be posted on blogs which are in the same niche than you. Furthermore, they have to be actually relevant to the post at hand, rather than being generic comments like “Nice site” or “Thanks, very good!”. Comments like these look like obvious spam and will probably end up being removed quickly by the blog owner.

Check their reviews

Many providers of backlinking services advertise their services on sections of internet marketing forums designed for this purpose. This actually is a very big advantage for you. You will be able to see comments from other users who have purchased backlinks from them and see if other buyers were satisfied or not.

Avoid going with a provider that has few or no reviews, even if their prices seem to be the least expensive out there. Many scammers price their offerings very low in order to attract a lot of orders and then do either poor quality work or do nothing at all and disappear with the money they’ve collected. If you have to deal with a new member who doesn’t have any reviews and hasn’t built up a reputation, only make a very small order first to see if they are actually able to deliver on what they’ve promised.

Getting The Most Out Of Article Marketing

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

Getting The Most Out Of Article Marketing

We all know that article marketing is an effective way to get traffic to your website. Whether it is a product that you own, or an affiliate offer that you are running, it is a very effective way of getting the visitors that you need. It also gives you the opportunity to get free traffic. Article marketing can bring you traffic in two ways, either by having readers who see your article click through to your site via your links, or by building backlinks that will help you rise in search engines for your desired keywords. While it is an effective marketing method, there are some things you need to keep under consideration to get the most out of it.

Many who are starting out in article marketing wonder just how long the articles have to be in order to be effective. The general rule is that an article of around 300 to 400 words in sufficient. You see, online readers typically have a short attention span. Any longer and they are likely to lose interest an feel bored. Unless your content has truly captivated them, they wouldn’t bother with reading a long wall of text. If you think that you have more to say than what would fit in a 400 word article, it would be better to split your ideas into two articles or so.

Remember, when you are doing article marketing, the goal is to get the reader to visit your website. Give them some basic information about the topic that your readers are interested in, but leave them wnting to know more about what you are talking about. If your article gives them all the details that they were looking for, readers will see no point in continuing on to your site.

If you want your articles to be useful in getting you backlinks in search engines, the content will have to be unique. Submitting articles to various respected article directories and websites is naturally a good thing to do, but the search engines are looking for content that is unique. Therefore, don’t simply submit the same article over and over. You can, instead, rewrite the article so that search engines will consider it to be unique.

There are a few tools and services available online which claim to be able to automatically take content and make it unique. If you use one of them, make sure that the articles come out as readable to a human being, rather than some gibberish which looks like it was written by someone who doesn’t even speak English. If readers can’t even understand what you are saying, they are quite unlikely to want to visit your website afterward and will simply go read something else. Therefore, it could be much better to rewrite the articles yourself or pay a freelancer a couple of dollars per article to do it for you. The results will usually be quite better.

Link Building Is Important – But It Must Be Done Properly

Link Building Is Important – But It Must Be Done Properly

If you want your website to rise in search engine rankings, you have probably heard about the importance of building quality backlinks. In fact, it is a topic that is often discussed in various webmaster forums. While building backlinks is a necessity, it needs to be done in a proper way for it to be effective in getting your website to rise through search results. Here are some ways to make sure that your link building efforts will bring you the results that you are hoping for.

You should first know that not all links are the same. Search engines such as Google prefer one way backlinks from quality websites that have content which is related to whatever niche your site is in. There are many “link exchange” programs out there where you can put a link to your site somewhere, but will have to put a link back to the referring site on your page. These types of links do not carry much weight in search engines and will naturally not do much to boost your ranking.

Even if you do get one way backlinks to your site, it is important that you consider what kind of site they are placed on. Some webmasters offer you the chance to place a link to your page on their site for a fee. The problem with such services is that the pages on which your links will be placed on are often just a “links” page that is nothing but a dump of dozens of links to unrelated sites. Or they could be placed on pages where the content has little relevance to the niche of your site. If all you do is place links on these kinds of sites, chances are you will actually get penalized rather than go up in search engine rankings.

Another thing to keep in mind is that building backlinks to your site is a process that needs to be done gradually over time. Your link building should appear natural to the eyes of the search engines. If you have a completely new website that has just started, the search engines will not find it normal that it starts getting thousands of links all over the place from day one. Google will simply think that you are spamming your links all over the web in order to try and move up quickly in search results. Instead of moving up, your site will likely be pushed down. Therefore, if you make use of any services, online tools or software to build links, it is important that you take a look at how exactly they are getting you those links. If someone promises to give you “thousands of backlinks” in a day, chances are that they are doing something that is not one the up and up. Remember to take your link building efforts slowly and gradually to get the best results.

An Intro To Article Marketing

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

An Intro To Article Marketing

In the online marketing world there are various ways to draw traffic to your website and therefore earn money by promoting products or services. These could be your own creation or various kinds of affiliate offers that you could be running. Article marketing is one of these methods. What exactly does it consist of? Let’s have an overview:

Simply put, article marketing makes you use articles that are related to the niche of whatever you want to promote in order to get traffic to your website. For example if you are promoting a fax to email solution you could write about the advantages of using such a service. They could also be in the form of a review about a certain product or service. Basically, the content will need to make the user want to buy what you are promoting without sounding too much like an advertisement.

Now where do you post these articles? The most common places used by internet marketers to put up their articles are article directories such as Ezinearticles and GoArticles. They have the advantage of receiving a lot of traffic every day and are ranked very high up in search engines such as Google. You could also post them on blogs or other sites which allow users to submit content.

How do articles actually get you traffic? There are two ways actually. The first one is through the links which are found in your article. Depending on where you post them you would be allowed to either insert links in the body of your article or in your signature (also called a resource box). A reader who is interested in finding out more about what you’re talking about can click on the link and then proceed to your website.

Articles can also be used for search engine optimization (SEO) purposes. By submitting your articles to high authority websites that are related to your niche and using the keyword that you want to target as your anchor text, you will get some great backlinks to your site. This could increase the position of your site on search engines. Note that building backlinks and doing search engine optimization through article marketing is a process which takes time. Unlike pay per click ads or email marketing, the results will not appear instantly. However it can be well worth it in the end.

Anyone who wants to give article marketing a try will need to know that it is a marketing method that will require some patience and dedication. You will need to write several unique articles and post them online. The traffic will start coming in slowly as more visitors start seeing your articles. But it does have the advantage of being one of the cheapest advertising methods there is. After all, it costs nothing to write the articles and submit them. It simply takes some time. This makes it a perfect solution if you don’t have much of a budget for online advertising.

Getting the most money when selling your internet business

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Getting the most money when selling your internet business

If you are thinking of selling your internet business it will be worthwhile going through these points below as you will get more money for your website.  Having an internet business that makes a regular income can be sold very easily but there are many other factors that a buyer will look for that you can implement to get more money from the sale of your internet business.

1) Make sure you have proof that your website has made regular income for at least the past 6 months

2) Make sure your website ranks well for its main keywords. If it doesn’t spend a couple of months building up your backlinks which overtime will increase your websites position within search engines and also increase your websites page rank.

3) Make sure you have a unique design for your website. I highly recommend having your website built on wordpress as wordpress rank very well on search engines. Also many webmasters know how to use wordpress due to how easy the interface is.

4) Make sure you have unique content on your website, having duplicate content on your website just lowers the value of your website to both the buyer and also to search engines.

5) Try to build up an email list on your website.  The more emails you have on your list the higher the value of your website.  The value of 1 email address is $1 a month. So if you managed to build up an email list of 1,000 leads, you can get at least $1,000 extra for your website.  I highly recommend using Aweber as an email autoresponder as they provide cusomised templates you can insert into your website to make the optin forms look very professional. Its also a recognised leader in email lead capture.  A very good way to build up your email list is to give a way a free ebook related to your websites niche.

6) The addition of a forum to your website can be very useful also if you can build up a large community of users, as a buyer can see this as a great way to market to this large community of forum users, which will increase the value of your website.  Not only that it will also increase the amount of traffic to your website. The more traffic you have coming to your website the more valuble your website is.  Because any internet marketer looking to buy a website also looks at the amount of traffic coming to your website. The more traffic you have the more opportunities your website will have for your buyers to monitiese from.

7) Age of domain – Its important to have a well aged domain, i would say at least 12 months, the older the domain the better.

8.) Social networking followers. Another good idea is to setup a Twitter and Facebook fan page and try and get as many followers as possible because this is another very good way to get traffic to your website and also increase the value of your website because its another avenue the buyer can market to your followers.

9) Make sure you have as much statics as possible, potential buyers love to see as much proof as possible when deciding to purchase an internet business.  For example – Google analytics, Income stats from any affiliate accounts you have, any transaction proof you have from paypal. Maybe even creating a video of you logging into your accounts to proof your website has made the income you state on your listing.

10) If your website doesn’t have a blog, get a blog setup with at least a months unique content. A blog is very good for optimisation on search engines, and a buyer will be looking to make sure the site has a blog.

Using Forums to Market Your Website

Online forums are sometimes overlooked as a means to market your product or website to a large audience, but in reality, forums are still alive and thriving no matter the newest social network which comes along.

The reason forums are still a mainstay online is that they are very niche offerings. Sure, you can go to Twitter to talk about internet marketing, but 1/2 your audience might not care. On a forum dedicated to Internet Marketing such as Warrior Forum, everyone there is there to work on their internet marketing business or to learn more about internet marketing. Social networks are great for a broad market, but to get very targeted “social” interaction a forum still remains the top choice. You see the difference?

One of the main ways to use forums as a marketing tool for your website is to use the signature allowed in your posts that you create. This signature which usually can allow links (and usually dofollow links) will allow you to create numerous backlinks to your website. The more you post, the more times your link appears on different pages of the website. This is good for two reasons mainly, 1) that your link will gather you some Google “juice” (aka backlinks) and 2) that your fellow forum members might happen to click on it.

The two are very different, one is traffic for the future and the other is traffic now. It is very important however, to make sure you are providing relevant content and not spam. Forum members hate when new members come into their forum and start spamming comments that are generic or add no value to the conversation. Much like a social network such as Twitter. Make sure, for your future readers sake and your reputations sake, that you do not come off as spammy, that you promote your site in a respectable way and that you provide some sort of value to the other forum members.

Another minor way, but another way that might be important are forums with “websites” in their profiles. So when you are signing up and a forum asks for your personal website, put your product website there that you want to promote. That will provide you with one backlink at least for your effort, better than nothing, right?

Good luck and don’t be a bad forum member – make sure you follow the rules and add value to the conversation.
